JUL 1 1 . t V 1 . 1 "V- FORTHEFRRRIER. Small l'ens for Fattening Swine. That exercise conduces very little toward taking on ilush, while puiet assists uiaier ially to hasten the operation of fattening, well known, and should ever be taken into account by those who would tit any , animal for slaughtering. Ihe ledlowmg from the Anurkan Agriculturalist, is worth the atteution of the farmers : "From ob- more, made in villages ana rurai uisir.i is, we have noticed that the fattest and the best pork is made in the former, where one or two pigs are kept in small pens. The villager luu but small room, ad crowds his" pig into small tjuarte3 for the whole year. It is fed on slops for eight mouths, and for the last four months is crammed with scalding ludian meal, lie pets pork of decidedly better quality than ho can purchase, and gets it cheaper. The whole energy of the animal is forced by his training iuto the production of flesh and tat. The pigs of the farmer, on the other hand, run iu pasture, or on the com mon, for six or eight mouths, and are shut up a dozen or more in a large pen to fatten because he has plenty of room. The ener gy of the auimal litis gone very much to the development of snout and feet, and tho propensity to run and to root is not circumscribed very much iu his roomy pen. ly Christmas he is not more than two thirds fattened, and he has consumed quite us much as the village pig, which is ready for the knife. We have two yearling pigs, good four hundred and fifty pounds of pork by Christmas, mat nave never oeen out oi a pen eight feet by twelve since they were eiirht weeks old. iMnall pens, kept dry, and rcsular thrift."" feed, is the secret of their Straw Tor Feeding Sloclt. From the experience of Mr. Mechi, one of the lct Englisli larmers, straw .should le made more of than it is. He has giv en his views at length in the English Ag ricultural papers, and regards it "u vital fniestion for agriculture." lie savs that the present low estimate of the value of it arises from the Hsct that unless properly prepared it is unavailable as food. 1 ti proof of its value, he gives the result of some ex periments he has made. In feeding ten short-horned bullocks, about thirty wontha old he g;ve a steamed mixture of cut straw, about six of rape cake, three of malt combs and of bran, moistened with twenty gallons of hot water per day. lie also fed three hundred pound- of mangel-wurtzel. The whole cost not including straw ahd labor, is about oue dollar per week. He says : "The animals are in a fattening and grow inj; condition, and advance remuneratively. Alter feeding they lie down contented, free from restlessness. He further says : 'The whole question may be said to hinge upon the condition in which the food is administered. It must be moist and warm, and the animals must have proper warmth aud shelter. As a general rule this is not the case throughout the kingdom, hence much food is wasted or misapplied. Were I to give 1113 bullocks the same quantity of cut straw iu a dry state, they would not oat one half of it; besides, they would be restless and dissatisfied. This I know from experience." Ieiivet as .Manure. Ia many parts of our country woodlands have deposits of leaves, until the amount contained on the surface is entirely great er than is required for any benefit they can furnish to the growing forests. In fuch cases the leaves may be removed to the manure shell with great profit ; having parted before their fall or soon after, with all their aqueous portion, they become a progressed representative of large amounts of inorganic matter, and when properly composted and decayed, form a manure of great value. Woods earth, to be found in many localities in large deposits, is very valuable as manure, but first requiring treatment with a lime and salt mixture, to neutralize tannic acid and to disintegrate the fibre so as to render the manure fine for distribution. We have often seen woo earth of tlirec times the value per cord of tho best barnyard manure. Dried leaves may be used as an absorbent for urine in stables in the place of straw, and they may bo gathered up through the woods. JPunipKin Itulter. "Wash the pumpkius clean, take out th feels, aud scrape the insideout with strong iron spoon. j3jn tin sou, and rub it through acoarse sieve. When strained, put it into a kettle and boi slowly all day, stirring it often, l'u in largo handful of salt.
