I fllUR.SPAr:::::::::::::::XUVKMBKK 17. LOCAL AND PERSONAL TSE CoUN'TT Paper. If there is any I enterprise which demands the protection M t,f the whole people of a county, it is the j ,eal press. The interests of the county t rc, in a greater or less degree, the inter f I Htsof each and every of its citizens, and ia do fay can tney be so well advanced aj through the medium of a home' news paper. Pevoting itself to these interests, an l sruardin them with a jealous c-e, it 1 becomes at once the friend of the Farmer. I the Mechanic, the Merchant, and indeed of every citizen of the county, no matter : 1 irhat his occupation, business, or profes- I iiun may be. If properly conducted, it is I I the advocate of ji'very local enterprise, ten- jdla.'to the benefit of the community: it 1 excites public seutimeut on every subject I of importance ; it gives the news of the I county; and tells us what its people are leiiiraed in what, they are raising, nianu jtieturing, buying, selling where they jiive, and all about them. These are mat ters which cannot as a ireneral thing, be brought home to the people through any h :!:er source than the county paper, and th?y furnish the best evidence of its use fuhiess. City papers are all right enough, qJ such as are able, should take and pay far at least one of them. But the houi Jraper should iu no event be neglected. 5: should hive the preference over all .'.hers. Iu our own county, there are sev- rui papers published, every one of winch, 2 we think, is entitled to be liberally sup ort'jl aad encouraged. Is the reader a Vilscribor to one of thorn ? Married On Thursday, November 10th, at Ulairsville, by tLe Kev. Mr. Stil llnger, Patrick Bracken, Esq., of Min eral Point, this county, to Miss Maria Bredin, of Livermorc, Westmoreland county. We were somewhat surprised at the j above announcement. Our friend Brack en called at our Sanctum about two weeks ago, and vre had a very agreeable chit chat on many oJher subjects, buras to the fact that he was about to migrate to the State of Matrimony "Oh no, lie never mentioned it !"' and indeed Ave did not for oi.e moment suspect it. But it is even si, and all that is left us now, is to "ish him and his fair bride a pleasant journey over the many hills and hollows of this mundane sphere, and a good time gener ally iu "the days of the hereafter." A NriSANCE. There seems to be a singular unanimity of opinion in the minds of a good many of our citizens as re gards the utility and convenience of that highly-cultivated mud-puddle to be found directly in front of the Barber Shop all agreeing that it could easily be dispensed with, and that without at all interfering with the general beauty of the street or the individual comfort of pedestrians. dust such another disagreeable place for a per.on to plout into on a dark night, (as is generally the cae,) could not be found, we venture to say, by a fast walker in a long day's journey. C. A. A. The sixth annual distribu tion of the Cosmopolitan Art Association will be made on the olst January, 1800. Dunn, whose location is almost opposite the "Mountain House," has opened out a very large and superior assortment of the most approved Drugs and Medicines, to gether with a variety of other et ceteras. to which he invites the attention of the public, lie keeps by several degrees the best store of the kind in town, and is pat ronized to an extent which shows that the people of Ebensburg have confidence in his abilities to fill the responsible duties of his calling. T. P. FENLON, Esq. By late arrivals from Kansas we learu that this gentleman, formerly a resident of Ebensburg, has been elected Prosecuting Attorney of Leaven worth City. It is not a part of our nature to rejoice over any defeat, however trifling of our party or its candidates, but we con fess that when a good fellow like Tom Feulon w ins the race, as he has done, the fact assists mightily in taking the sting from a Loco-Foco triumph Thomas will please cousider us his, most respect fully. Married. At Shade Gap, Hunting don co., Pa., on Thursday, the 10th hist, by the Bcv. Doyle, Dr. II. C. Christy, of Wilmore, Cambria co., to Miss M. A. Starr, of the former place. We congratulate our friend, Dr. Chris ty, upon the happy consummation to which he has brought this little business arrange ment. May his love towards his bride, and his bride's love towards him, ever be "True us the needle to the pole, And fixed and constant as the Northern Starr." The Iron City College, of Pittsburg, Pa., is now the largest Commercial School in thi rouiifrv. -I'irtrttrfj Pi"tfrt. , Another Bear Killed. On Mondav last, three or four of our crack hunters while out in quest of the "varmints," about two miles from town, and near the Jefferson Plank lload, succeeded in treeing two bears upon one tree. Following up the advantage thus gained, a quietus was speedily given to one of them, but the other, taking advantage of the time when thcif guns were all discharged, very sud denly decamped, and has not since been heard of. Lecture at Loretto. On Thursday "ext Thanksgiving Day a lecture will be delivered in St. Mary's Church, Loretto, by the Rev. James Kearney, of Johnstown. Subject: "The Church and Democracy." The proceeds are to be ap plied in payment of repairs done to the resident Pastor's house. As the subject is an interesting one, and the Lecturer well qualified to handle it, a large audience will most likely be present. The Ring. A short but energetic "Mill" came off at Wilmore Station, on Tuesday morning, between two track-layers, which afforded amusement to a crowd of passengers awaiting the arrival of the Express train. The opponents were very unequally matched, both as regarded size and skill; and although the smaller of the two retired with an ugly looking mug and the loss of some claret, he evidently had irrit. Col. John G. Given. We had the pleasure yesterday of meeting with our old friend, Col. John G. Given, fbrmcily of this county, but now engaged on the "Daily Democrat and News," at Davcn pOrt. Iowa. Few better specimens of hu manity than the Col. are now iu existence. We understand he leaves in a few days "for keep." Lo:C' way he live, and may he live longer. Sensible. At a meeting of he Ly ceum on Friday night last, it was Unsolved, That, hereafter, ladies shall be admitted as spectators and listeners at ail the meetings of the .Society. This is right. But it does not go far enough. Why not allow the ladies to take part in the deliberations of the So ciety ? We should like to hear some maiden speeches there. Ciianoe in Mails. On Monday last, a new mail arrangement went into opera tion. Matter intended for both the East and West leaves here every morning, at 7 o'clock, and matter from those points is received here daily at 12 o'clock, M. We consider this arrangement decidedly preferable to the old, and believe it will be so regarded by our readers. Sutreme Court. Of the cases carri ed up to the Supreme Court from this county, and argued week before last, the following have been decided : Philip Groft ct al. vs. Simon J. Weak land and Daniel Colclesser. Affirmed. D K. Galway's Appeal. Affirmed at costs of appellant. Opinion by Strong, J. Groceries, etc. Our friend Isaac Wike, Esq., of Wilmore, keeps constantly on hand a large and superior stock of Gro ceries, Confcctionaries, etc., which he makes it a standing rule to sell at as low prices as can be got in any store in the place. Customers are requested to crowd in. Xot Dead. The Co.mhria Tribune published a notice, some time ago, of the death in the State of Indiana of 11. F. Holder, formerly of Wilmore. It appears that "Richard's himself again," his friends having recently received a letter from him in which he reports himself alive and kicking. In Town. Charlie Litzinger, Clerk at the Scott House, Pittsburg, and George M. Riddle, of the firm of Riddle, Gill, & Co., Philadelphia, both formerly of this county, have been spending a few days with their friends in this place. They are both good fellows, and have our best wishes for their future prosperity. Dickens' Novels. We have received the seventh volume of the weekly issue of T. B. Peterson & Brothers' cheap edition of Dickens' Works for the Million. Being so very cheap, everybody should purchase the entire set. Price, five dollars. More Mcsic. We are glad to notice that Prof. Smith is again in town. His appearance amongst us is always the fore ruuncr of a rich musical treat. We un derstand he is engaged to teach a class in Loretto.
