LOCAL AN D PERSONAL.
Halloween. Last Monday evening:
Halloween the anniversary of the
n;-ht which, in olden times, was supposed
to be the particular occasion when witch
a hirie-, elves, and other mischicf-lov-jn.r
loiiiis held their grand jubilee; as
also the time when the ceremony of "pul
liii;: the kail," "burning nuts," and other
tjuaint aul superstitious customs were ob
served. Quite a different, and a much
more striking, performance is now indul
ged in by "Young America," who, it
would seem, has taken upon himself the
peculiar privilege of celebrating the occa
sion in a style as original as refresh
ing. As soon as the shades of evening
have descended, all manner of fantastic
tricks and practical jokes are played off on
the peaceable citizens boxes, benches,
wa"ns, stepping-stones, signs, etc., are
ipiietly removed from their usual position,
and piled up on some spot in an exceed
ingly artistic style ; fences are built over
the highways, together with numerous
other displays of the ingenuity of the Uon
dam fairies. Although the harm done to
property is generally inconsiderable, we are
inclined to the belief that the custom is
uure honored in the breach than in the
observance. Still, as boys are boys, and
ai Halloween comcth but once a year, we
choa'J be content that it is no worse.
Of Public Schools. The Directors
of the Public Schools for the various dis
tricts in the coui.ty are generally engaged
jit present in examining and choosing
persons to act us Teachers during the
coaiing Winter. They should endeav
or, so far as possible, to select citizen
it' our own county for this responsible jo
Mtiun. We have enough, and capable,
yjua m?n and women in our midst to
"tcaeh the young idea how to shoot,"
without goinr outsido our limits. We
are also greatly iti favor of giving educa
ted young ladies the Gist chance in the
f remises ; from the fact that, although
vouag i:in can earn a livelihood at 50111?
:h.T profession, they, as a general thing,
';nn jt. Th'y are a-5 capable of governing
u rciioul as t!ie mah's, c-m teach as well
n.s males. are generally better liketl and
iii"re iinr.lieitlY obeyed by the pupils,
i:il. ur: the whole, intkt; better tutors.
I '. ' ' N )y F." On Saturday evening last,
:-.-;!u of horses, (to which was attached
h ua.'ou, the sole rccupants of which bc
i". a m 1:1 an lone barrel of flour, ) becoming
l'niinned at some object, whether real or
imaginary wc didn't learn, set off at the
rite of .1:U) down Main street, seemingly
with no particular point of destination in
view. After proceeding in this promiscu
ous manner far a couple of squares, the
li.vi'lof the barrel ''caved in." Whereupon,
sjts a fall in bread stuffs as then and
tii re took place was never before experi-
riff- l in these diggings. The horses,
however, were finally checked in theirmad
career, havingahnost exhausted themselves
in their attempt to bring about this sud
fill. Vi'e have not learned which was
tiie most seriously injured the man, the
horses, or the flour.
TiiK Wk.vtIIKK. "Variety," 'tis said,
" tho spice of life." Taking such as
tute observation as the basis of our calcu
H'ion, we certainly have had a "spicy"
Autumn thus far, then spicy enough, in
' lf;t, to season the balance of the year.
"ne day, it is warm; the next, cold ; the
Ue.it, rainy ; the next, windy ; and so on,
through the whole category of the various
ftutes of the atmosphere. At present, we
ire enjoying what is shrewdly supposed to
Indian Summer it being just warm
sii'aii;'h to make it too hot for an overcoat,
mh I too cold to do without one. How long
pleasant state of affairs will continue,
, ''w to be seen. In the meantime, we
11 merely advise those who are fortu
j nough to possess a horse and sleigh,
& themselves in readiness for action
.at a moment's warning, for we are bound
J tj Lave snow toon if not sooner.
V Mammoth Dear Shot. On last
"turday, while one of our citizens was
,jut gunning, near Myers' farm, about two
fn.es from town, he came in contact with
a Very large black bear, which he imme-
J;4t..!y firt.j upon, and, having lodged
lhree balls in his body, speedily terminat-
J his career. Although in a Poor con.
i'tiun, it weighed 205 pounds. These

Abel Lloyd, Esq., of Cambria townshin :

suing year are as follows : Counsel, John
fe. lvhey, Esq.; Clerk, G. C. K. Zahm,
Esq. ; Mercantile Appraiser, Thomas Mc

r Thomas 1. Fenlon, Esq. This gen
tleman, formerly a resident of our town,
baa been nominated by the Loco-Focos of
Leavenworth, Kansas, a3 their candidate
for District Attorney, and his election is
paid to be by no means an improbable
thing. It gives us pleasure at all times
to note the success ot a Cambria county
man, wherever he be found ; and we would
just insinuate to the voters of Leaven
worth, that, barring his politics, they
couldn't find a better or more worthy man
than Tom were they to travel the world
over.
Groceries. "When you have been
pondering on the subject of buying your
winter stock of Groceries, you have, doubt
less, asked yourself the question ''"Where
can I buy them cheapest V Did it ever
strike you, then, that Hichard II. Tudor
could satisfactorily settle the question,
providing you gave him a fair trial ? Per
haps not. He will give, at any time, a
practical demonstration of the fact, to
those calling at his store, on High street,
near the Diamond.

The Ebensburg Ura.ss IJand. This
excellent and rapidly-improving Dand
gave the citizens of this place another very
acceptable serenade on Tuesday night.
Its members, individually and collectively,
display fine musical talents, and certainly
play very well for the length of time they
have been in practice. Ye doubt not but
that, ere long, they will reach the climax
of perfection in their peculiar profession.
We hope so, at least.
New Gooixs. Moore & Moore have re

really splendid lot of just the kind of
goods wanted by the people of Ebeirsburg
and surrounding couutry, and which they
are industriously engaged, at present, in

of the same sort left to accommodate quite
a number of customers, yet.
Died On the 1st inst,, at his residence'

The deceased was one of the pioneers of

at the Lyceum, on next Friday evening, is :
RmoIvcJ, that the love of nationality, as
manifested by some of our adopted citizens, is
inconsistent with the geuius of our Govern
ment. 1)1ED. In Johnstown, on WeJncsday,
the 2Gth ult., Thomas Jones, (formerly of
Jackson township, and well known in this
place,) aged about 50 years. His remains
were interred in the Deulah Cemetery.
Distressing Accident. Our whole
community was shocked to learn that, on
Tuesday last, Mr. Godfrey Garman, a resi
dent of Jackson township, was instantly
killed, near Wilmore, in this county, whilst
attempting to jump from a train of freight
cars when in motion. He was about 28
years of age, and unmarried.
Married. On Tuesday, the 15th inst.,
by thellev. Father Magnus, Mr. HENRY
SEYMORE, to Miss KATE PITMAN,
both of this place.
Our wish is, that the happy couple may
never see more of the troubles and vicissi
tudes of this world, than usually fall to
the share of poor human mortals.
