Halloween. Last Monday evening:
Halloween the anniversary of the
n;-ht which, in olden times, was supposed
to be the particular occasion when witch
a hirie-, elves, and other mischicf-lov-jn.r
loiiiis held their grand jubilee; as
also the time when the ceremony of "pul
liii;: the kail," "burning nuts," and other
tjuaint aul superstitious customs were ob
served. Quite a different, and a much
more striking, performance is now indul
ged in by "Young America," who, it
would seem, has taken upon himself the
peculiar privilege of celebrating the occa
sion in a style as original as refresh
ing. As soon as the shades of evening
have descended, all manner of fantastic
tricks and practical jokes are played off on
the peaceable citizens boxes, benches,
wa"ns, stepping-stones, signs, etc., are
ipiietly removed from their usual position,
and piled up on some spot in an exceed
ingly artistic style ; fences are built over
the highways, together with numerous
other displays of the ingenuity of the Uon
dam fairies. Although the harm done to
property is generally inconsiderable, we are
inclined to the belief that the custom is
uure honored in the breach than in the
observance. Still, as boys are boys, and
ai Halloween comcth but once a year, we
choa'J be content that it is no worse.
Of Public Schools. The Directors
of the Public Schools for the various dis
tricts in the coui.ty are generally engaged
jit present in examining and choosing
persons to act us Teachers during the
coaiing Winter. They should endeav
or, so far as possible, to select citizen
it' our own county for this responsible jo
Mtiun. We have enough, and capable,
yjua m?n and women in our midst to

are also greatly iti favor of giving educa

paid to be by no means an improbable
thing. It gives us pleasure at all times
to note the success ot a Cambria county
man, wherever he be found ; and we would
just insinuate to the voters of Leaven
worth, that, barring his politics, they
couldn't find a better or more worthy man
than Tom were they to travel the world
over.

columns this week. Dick is a talented
scholar, a well-read lawyer, and a perfect
gentleman qualities which will secure to
him plenty of clients from among the host
of those who are in the habit of dealing
in the "glorious uncertainties of the law."
The Ebensburg Ura.ss IJand. This
excellent and rapidly-improving Dand
gave the citizens of this place another very
acceptable serenade on Tuesday night.
Its members, individually and collectively,
display fine musical talents, and certainly
play very well for the length of time they
have been in practice. Ye doubt not but
that, ere long, they will reach the climax
of perfection in their peculiar profession.
We hope so, at least.
New Gooixs. Moore & Moore have re
ceived, at their stove, ou High street, a
really splendid lot of just the kind of
goods wanted by the people of Ebeirsburg
and surrounding couutry, and which they
are industriously engaged, at present, in
.serviDrr out to crowds of admiring custom
ers. Notwithstanding, they have enough
of the same sort left to accommodate quite
a number of customers, yet.
Died On the 1st inst,, at his residence'
live miles North of Ebensburg, Mr. Rob
ert Thomas, in the TUth year of his age.
The deceased was one of the pioneers of
Cambria county a man of iron consti
tution, and struggled long w ith the fell
destroyer, whose shafts none may always
escape. He leaves a large circle of rel
atives and friends to mourn his death.

the Commercial Schools at the East The

stitution has been acknowledged at the
principal Fairs of the United States, for

Lyceum. The question for discussion
at the Lyceum, on next Friday evening, is :

manifested by some of our adopted citizens, is
inconsistent with the geuius of our Govern
ment. 1)1ED. In Johnstown, on WeJncsday,
the 2Gth ult., Thomas Jones, (formerly of
Jackson township, and well known in this
place,) aged about 50 years. His remains
were interred in the Deulah Cemetery.
Distressing Accident. Our whole
community was shocked to learn that, on
Tuesday last, Mr. Godfrey Garman, a resi
dent of Jackson township, was instantly
killed, near Wilmore, in this county, whilst
attempting to jump from a train of freight
cars when in motion. He was about 28
years of age, and unmarried.
Married. On Tuesday, the 15th inst.,
by thellev. Father Magnus, Mr. HENRY
SEYMORE, to Miss KATE PITMAN,
both of this place.
Our wish is, that the happy couple may
never see more of the troubles and vicissi
tudes of this world, than usually fall to
the share of poor human mortals.
TnE "Little Pilgrim." We have
received, from its talented editress, Grace
Greenwood, the entire volume of this
piquant little paper for the year 1859, for
which favor we return our sincere and
unadulterated thanks. No more sparklingly
brilliant nor extremely entertaining jour
nal could be easily gotton up.
T. B. Peterson & Bros. This widely
known publishing firm issued another
volume of Dickens' Novels on Saturday.
These works are printed by the Messrs.
P. in an exceedingly beautiful and elabo
rate manner, on fine white paper and are
sold at the low rate of five dollars for the
series.
Married On Tuesday, the 25th ult.,
at the residence of the bride's father, by
the Rev. George Hill, Rev. Orr Law
son, of Upshur county, Va., to Miss Ma
ry E. Marshall, of Blairsville, Pa.
This is rather a lossin' transaction to
the good bachelors of that inland city.
A Welcome Visitor. Dr. D. W.
Lewis, formerly a resident of this town,
but at present holding forth in East Lib
erty, Allegheny county, was in town on
Monday lat. The Doctor has hosts of
friends here, who are always rejoiced to
see him.
Jugged. Constable Strayer deposited
four "Sisters of the Pave" in Jail, on Fri
day night last. The were charged with
riot, etc., and hailed from Johnstown.
