c "giafizmatfz 'goitntof , glcarficfb, a., mtc 16, 1869. Point3 of a Good Cow. If yon desire to select a good cow, you should choose one with the following points, vis : Head of medium size, with a strong, well-marked, long structare, broad between and high above the eyes, and wider between the roots of the horns; with a capacious but not clumsy muzzle, full nostrils, an eye full and mild, not too large and prominent Jowls slightly turned upwards and with a calm and at the same time strong and resolute expression ; neck long, well mu?cled, slender, tapering toward the head, with little Jloose skin hanging below, and not dropping too much forward of the shoulders; shoulders thin and sharp at the top, and lying close to the chine ; somewhat prominent, strong muscled and loose jointed at the base, long from the elbow to the point in front of the base, forequartera lieht, comparatively, with a straight, slender fore leg, especially below the knee broad knee, and broad, fat, capa cious foot, carcase deep.round and full about the heart, and increasinfc largely toward the hind quarters; back straight and loosely jointed, pelvis wide over the hips, long and supplied with strong muscles; bind garters broad, strong on the outside, and well cut out on the inside, with strong hock and long tapered hind foot ; tail long and slender, strong at the roots, and set on in a line with the back, not too high or too low , udder evenly divided into four quarters, extending well forward, filling the cavity between the thighs behind, not being low and with a long, easy and crooked milk vein ; teats set far apart, and of medium eize and length ; hide loose and elastic, but not too thin, hair soft silky, and of lively appearance and abun dant in quantity ; ribs broad and flat surface, with thin edges, and especially the two last widely separated. "Every eow should fatten one pig," is an old rule and a good one. That is, the daily product of a good cow should be in butter milk or whey enough to feed one pig, after the cream and cheese are extracted. With regard to the size best suited to dairy pur poses, I think on ourordinary New England pastures, a cow that will dress in good con dition, six hundred pounds is the best. How to Market Butter. The Boston Cultivator tells how the best farmers near Philadelphia get so high a price for their butter: "First, they altcay make a first claw article, so their customers, sure of get ting the best there is, will not desert them on account of a raise in the price. Second, they bring in their butter in a showy and attractive condition. No pot of delfware, no tub or pail of oak or hemlock, no vulgar firkin is used to entomb thtwe 'noble balls, golden-hued with the aroma of white clover and Poaprateune lingering in the firm grain. A large tin vessel.designed expressly for the business, has chambers at each end, into which ice is put. Thin wooden shelves, about three inches apart, rest on little pro jections from the sides. A layer of balls is then placed on the bottom and covered with its shell, but not so as to touch or mar the handsome print of a sheaf of grain which stand out on the top of each ball ; on the shelf another layer of prints, and so on till the vessel is full, they containing forty or fifty pounds of prints. The tin, with ice in each end, is then set in a wooden tub which has been cooled with ice or spring water. Over this is drawn a cover of padded car peting, with oil-cloth on top. Thus hot air and dust is wholly exoluded and the butter rides to the city and opens in the market house in as fine condition as when packed in the spring house. In just this way, with this degree of care and skill, is the best Philadelphia butter made, marked and mar keted. No wonder the Philadelphians would rather pay seventy-five cents than go back from such manna to the leeks and on ions of the common firkin. To Keep a Stove Bright. Make a weak alum water and mix your "British Luster" with it ; put two spoonfulls to a gill of alum water ; let the -stove be cold and brush it with the mixture ; then take a dry brush and luster and rub the stove until it is dry. Should any parts, before polishing, become so dry as to look grey, moisten with a wet brush and proceed as before. By two applications a year it can be kept as bright as a coach body. Lemon Pujiplixgs. Add the juice of one lemon to the rind, which must be chop ped fine ; mix half a pound suet, also chop ped, with half a pound of bread crumbs.one egg, enough milk (or water) to make a stiff paste; add the lemon, sweeten to taste, di- vide it into five or six equal parts, and boil in separate cloths for three-quarters of an hour, and f erve up with wine sauce. Corns. One teaspoonful of tar, one of coarse brown sugar, and one of saltpetre. The whole of them warmed together. Spread it on kid leather the size of the corns, and in two days they will be drawn out Some farmers commence business in the morning in such a hurry that night over takes them before they have determined what to do first. A Virginia farmer says that with sheep and clover he can make any land productive, unless it has the barrenness of the sands of Sahara. NOTICK.
