And tasteless grouad-nut trailing low, The table of the woods supplied. Unknown the appies red and gold. The blushing tint of peajh and i.ear ; The mirror of the potr-wr told No tale of orchards ripe an I ra;-e. Wild as the fruits he scorn cd to i ill, These vales the idle Indian trod ; Nor knfiW the glad, creative .skill. The joy of him who toils with God. O painter of the fruit and flowers ! We thank thee for thy wise desin. Whereby these hninin hand. of ours Id nature's garden work with thine. And thanks that from our daily need The joy of simple faith i born. That he who smites the summer weed May trust Thee for the autumn corn. Give fools their gold and knaves their power, Let fortune's bubles rise and fail; Who sows a field, ot trains a (lower. Or plants a tree is more than ail. For he who blesses mot is blessed ; And G-d and man s'ua'l own bis wortli Who toils to leave as a ljcie.-t An added b-jauty to the earth. And soon or late, to all that sow. The time of haivest shall be givrn; The flowers shall boolm.the fruit shall grow. If not on earth, at la.t in heaven. Eemedy For Tender Jloatii la Horses. It is always a desirable point gained to understand the true cause of any effect, wound, disease or complaint. Some horses will always be exceedingly ten der in the mouth, while others are s onie- times unmanageable. The corrodinc of the iron bridle bit in the mouth of :i thin-skinned, high-strung animal, will produce canker in the sides .if th mouth, just as mechanics often get sor js holding cut nails in their lips while at work. Sometimes the headstall buckled up bo .short that the iron bit is drawn up with much force a-iain-l the sides of the mouth. If the i-kin 1h tender the animal will be liable to have a sore mouth ; a ad the woun 1 will be very tender that .scarcely the pressure of the weight of the reins can be endu red. Sometimes the check-rein drawn tin unmercifully ti"ht. All s-.n-b , .' o thing cause sore mouth. The most satisfactory remedy for a sore mouth is a preventive. If the head-stall is too short, lengthen it, so that the bit may ride lower down to ward the lips. If the sore is produced by drawing the check-rein too tightlv. give it greater length. If the nature of the iron is such that the ru-t from the bit poisons the tender mouth, let the bit be covered with a piece of firm leather, sewed on with the seam on the lower side of the bit, so that thesmooth leather may come in contact with the mouth. Let a heavy piece of calkkin be employed to cover the bit rather than thin, flappy leather. If the iron about the mouth be galvanized thor oughly, that will prevent nil corrosion of t'le iron and consequent injury to the mouth. But, after all the coating is worn off, let the bit be covered with silver plate, which will cost a few dimes. A silver wash .will be of little value. But a silver-plated bit will last runy years, and will afford perfect security against sore mouth when the cause has been attributed to the rust of the iron. Sometimes the bit is a "twisted bit' with sharp edges, which, being drawn harshly against the mouth will remove the skin. X. V. ZWa. Rope Halters. Considerable dffi culty is sometimes experienced in hand ling a new rope, ou account of its stiff ness. This is especially the case when it is wanted for h ilters and cattle ties. Every farmer is aware how inconve nient a new stiff halter is to put on and tie up a horse with ; and new ropes for tying cattle are frejuntly un safe for the reason that they are not pliable enough to knot securely. All this can be remedied, and new rope m l ie as limber an 1 soft at once as af ter years constant use by simply iv.i! ing it for two hours in water. Then hang it in a room, and let it dry out thoroughly. It retains its stiffness un til dry, when it bee mes perfectly pli able. The Devons are natives of Devon shire, England, from which thov t tke their name. This breed is one a"mo'irt if not the oldest of the improved Eng lish cattle, and until the present c-.Mttn- ! ry, was bred with greater purity than J .11 i anv omer Dreea. A New Fertilzier. Boucherie. of France, has invented a process for sub jecting the entire bodies of animals to the action of dilute hydrochloric acid, by means of which they are complete ly dissolved, including the bones, nnd - converted into a uniform pulp, which is indorous and can be kept for any length of time, to be applied when needed towards fertilizing the soil.
