Spencer, ot Lumber-city, was killed, on February 22d by the falling of a limb from a tree, whilst engaged in making timber in Knox town ship. He leaves a wife and child to mourn his untimely death.. Sudden Death. On Thursday, Febru ary 28th, 1868, Mrs. Lizzie Marshall, wife of Win. Marshall, of this borough, fel prostrate on the street, and died in about two hours thereafter. She was in usual health, and was on her way to obtain some marketing. Cause apoplexy, resulting in congestion of the brain. The Weather, etc. On Sunday and 3onday last the air was mild and spring lite, causing the snow to melt rapidly. The quantity of snow on the ground v however, retarded the now of water to such an extent as to prevent a rapid rise, and, in conse quence, the streams are still ice-bound. But this (Wednesday) morning the indications are that the ice may run out to-day, it hav. ing started in places during the night. Borough Extension. A proposition was before the Borough Council, at their meet ing on Monday evening last, to extend the Borough lines so as to incl ide Mr. G. L. Keed'a mill within the Borough limits. This extension would embrace about one hundred and fifty acres of Mr. Reed's farm, including the lots lately sold, and the lands of M. S. Ogden, and several other out-lots adjoining making in all over two hundred acres. ' No You Don't. A brace of cunning fel lows in New York, representing themselves to be "Attorneys and Counsellors,'' profess the desire to forward "the ends of justice," by collecting from the proprietors of Gift Enterprises the prizes justly due to the ticket holder. A remittance of "two dollars is the preliminary htep in the proceeding. These artful dodgers ask us to spread their adver tiseuient before our readers grati, "at the same time adding any local ideas of your own." The idea strongly localized in our head is that these fellows are as arrant rogues as those they pretend to watch, and we cant ion our readers against being caught by their transparent swindle. Don't Bur an Organ Until you have heard that wonderful musical triumph, the Burdett Organ. The performacne of even a child on that perfect instrument is more touching and musically entrancing than the flourishes of pi act iced players upon most other organs. The effects of the vox hunm Jia (human voice,) and celestial stops a late invention, and found in perfection only in the Burdett Organ are touching and sympathetic in the extreme, and com para ble only to the heart-searching and tremu lous tones drawn from their violins by an Ole Bull or a Vieux Temps. The Messrs Kleber & Bro., J 22 Wood street, Pitts burgh, Pa., have the sole agency, and will be glad, no doubt, to show these organ gems to all who may desire it. Mar.ll-6t. It will be observed that the 19th district, corn Pose J of the counties of Clearfield, Erie, etc., is the only one in which there ha been ah increase 'a ejections, in 1867. And why? Because no change was made in the Hevenue officers in this district, while, perhaps, in all the rest most of the officers appointed by Mr. Lincoln have been removed and Johnson Democrats put in their place. Bu(. some one may ask, "How oould that make th difference? Was there not as much tax col fccted in 1867 as in 1866 ?" We answer, we have B knowledge that the people paid any less taxes l the officers ; and, In return will just ask, but did the officers pay to the government all the tiies they collected from the people ? May not (he capacious pockets of these hungry political cormorants have absorbed the difference in the mount collected in the two years ? Is not this a Tr7 plausible inference, as we have no knowl dge to the eontrary ? We leave the people to dfw their own conclusions from the premises. Education. The compulsory system of education is beginning to hud adherents in all sections. That ordinary xchooi laws are rendered inoperative by those whom they are calculated io benefit is a melatichully fact. The best minds of the country have been at work for a long time to remedy the defect. Their success has been so little mark ed that r.oubtoio have argued asjaiust the whole educational systttai with not a little show of plausibility. The burden of opin ion at present seems to be centering in the compulsory pian. from Missouri, Ohio, and South Carolina, the voices of discussion are heard, and the concession is general that the mends of education cannot longer allow their efforts to be annulled by unwise pa rents and truant children. In the German States, where the system has been in ope ration for many years, it has been found ef fective, and has contributed largely to their national boast of having the best school sys tem in the world. The new school law for the District of Columbia, lately introduced into the House of representatives, contains a compulsory clause, patterned after the Prussian plan. It makes it compulsory on parents to send their children to school for a certain periol, and make them responsi ble for their absence. The framer of the common school law of Pennsylvania saw the necessity of such a provision and took this opportunity of testing its merits in the Dis trict bill. It was sanctioned gladly by all the members of the Educational Committee, and we think it 13 a prominent section m that bill, which proposes to be a "model for the common schools of the nation.
