was arrested by Sheriffs Baily and Walker,

A Good One. On Sabbath evening a
week, during his sermon, Rev. Nixdorff
quoted the following memorable (gernian)
wards of Dr. Martin Luther : "llier stehe
Ich ; Ich kann nicJU -antlers ; Gott huele
viir : Amen C' pon hearing which a young
gentleman suggested, "He quotes fafiVi bad,
don't he?" ' Upon being informed that it
was german instead of latin, he exhibited
some surprise to the no little amusement of
his comrade.
Montgomery Coitnty.-"-A singular case
of accidental poisoning occurred recently in
.Marlborough township. A little boy of elev
en years, named Edward Heller, son of Jes
se Lieller, noticed ttie birus eating some Der
rieo which grew on the bushes near the
house, and it occurred to him to kill the
birds by putting poison on the berries. , Ac
cordingly 'he procured some arsenic which
was kept in the house ot his guardian, with
whom he lived, and smeared a lot of ber
ries with it as they hung upon the bushes.
On the following day the boy passed along
that way and noticed some of the, berries
lying on the ground, and thoughtlessly pick
ed them up and ate them, lie wad. taken
sick, and, notwithstanding proper medical
attendance, -died in two days after eating
the berries. ;. . . - -
How to Keep Cabbage. An exchange
gives the following plan for preserving cab
bage during the winter: "Select dry part
of the garden dig trenches ot sufficient
depth to receive the cabbage roots and stalk
up to the head into the trench transplant
the cabbage heads up f course fill in dirt
carefully about them op to the head plant
fuur short posts, two of them being higher
than the others to give a pitch to the roof
nail shingles lath or strips of old boards
from one post to another, and another board
half way up lay upon this a number of
bean poles, and upon these throw straw,
corn-fodder, or bean haulm, protecting also
the sides and your cabbage will keep in
good condition until "May. Where there is
fence, only two posts will be necessary
that being employed as the apex of the cov
r or roof." . .
A Warxi.no. The following tragical af
fair should be read and remembered by all
ha indulge in Halloween sports: "The
Gtarvanee of Halloween in the borough of
Cambria, adjoining Johnstown, on Thursday
evening Oct. 31st, was attended with a
togical denouement. We understand the
acts to be these : As a party of boys, who
were observing Halloween in the way now
tt,it popular with boys, were passing the
idence of Cyrus Thompson, a shot was
fired from a gun in the hands of said Thomp
as alleged, taking effect in the body of
m of Daniel Mc' Donald, aged fourteen
years, and causing his death at four o'clock,
