The Clearfield Republican made its appearance last week in an enlarged form, and much improved in its typograph ical appearance. We are pleased to observe this evidence of the financial prosperity of our neighbor ; but regret to say that there is no indication of improvement in the po litical tone of the Republican on the con trary, it is as virulent as ever in its opposi tion to the enlightened public sentiment of the country as represented by Congress, and quite as bitter in its denunciation cf relig ious denominations that have the indepen dence to express their opinions on the great topics that are at present enlisting the at tention of the civilized world. Tfie Lady's Friend. The December number of this, beautiful Magazine reminds us by its profuse display of attractions that the Hollidays are approaching. The charming steel engraving, "under the Mis tletoe," and the more elaborate desig of that which is anDronriately termed '01d Folks at Home and Young ones Abroad," have a direct reference to the happy and festive Christmas season. . These engravings are executed on steel, and in the finest style of art, as a comparison with those in other Magazines will Drove., Next, thene is a beautiful colored engraving, designed as a pattern for Berlin wool . work and beads worth in itself double the r rice of the whole number. Then a splendid double-paged colored fashion plate no common litho graph this, but finely executed on steel, from the latest Parisian styles. Next, we have a wood engraving of "The Toirna ment" a Christmas amusement; a piece of music and a host of other wood engra vings, devoted to the fashions, needle-work,' The literary matter is, as usual, of the lest quality. We are reliably informed, that a number of boys, some nearly grown up, have been engaged at playing ball .on Sundays, in the vicinity of town. Whilst we approve of ball-play ing as a healthful pastime, generally, we must condemn its indulgence on the Sab bath day as wicked and in no way excusable. We tnist that those.who have been guilty of this species of Sabbath-breaking, will, for their own good and for the credit of their families, refrain from it hereafter. Besides this, it is a violation of the State law, and. by a continuance of the practice, they may find themselves compelled to appear and an swer before the proper Court. The Meteoric Shower, although not witnessed by any of the citizens of Clear field, was not a failure everywhere. At Chi cago, Cincinnati, Washington, Boston, and other points, more or less "shooting stars" were seen by persons who remained up du ring Tuesday night. At New Haven, Con necticut, a party of 12 to 18 observers, head ed bv Prof. Newton, counted six hundred and ninety-six in five hours and twenty urin ates. At midnight-they came at the rate of 80 to the hour, increasing to 180 the last hour before daw n. At several other places nearly similar results were obtained. In England the shower was greater, as many as five thousand meteors being counted with the naked eye, in one hour, at Greenwich observatory. The display was of great beau ty and brilliancy. " Godey's Lady's Book. The number for December, of this attractive magazine is on our table. The steel-plates, fashion- plates, and wood-cuts in this number cannot be excelled bv any other magazine.
