The 140th 1'kxx'a PiEg't. We learn
that t!,e 140th IVnn'a regiment, has been
assigned to M-eciai .duty at Elniiva, New
York, where it io now stationed.
Removed. Capt. Kerr'soimipntv.whifli
has been here for several weeks, was ordered
to l'hilipsburg, and on Sunday luoniing
took its departure. It is due to the ollicers
andnicn ot'this eonijiany to say, that tlieir
ouuduct, while they have been among us,
lias been most commendable. We have not
heard a single complaint on the part of uvy
eitizen that the men did not behave properly,
and all our people will bear testimony to
their good conduct.
The TjrwKT.R"RrsTNP.s. Woli miA.-
pome inquiries during the past ten days, in
regard to the quantitj-of timber at this like
ly to be run to market this season, and
we find that it will be, from pre-ent in
dications, about two-thirds of that of last
year yet in our opinion, this will be more
than enough to supply the demand. In
fact, we believe it would be much to tho ad
vantage of our lumbermen, if not much o
ver the one-half now made would be taken
to market.
Death of a Soldier. Died, at the res
iij.'ro of his father, in Bloom township, on
Fobraary 22d. William F. George, aged
22 years. This 'young patriot enlisted ia
the la'th Penn'a regiment in 1801. and par
ticipated in nearly ail the battle.? which the
Potoujitc Army lottght. Towards the close
;!' his term of service his health beuan io
fail, and when he was mustered out he ic
tarneJ home with a shattered constitution,
only to die under his paternal roof. His
disease was consumption. He. remains were
interred at Grampian Hills, whither they
were followed by hi-3 parents and relatives,
and by those who love to honor the soldier
and patriot, though dead. Peace to his

The Draft. It will be seen by the letter
ff the Provost Marshall in another column,
that Clearfield coantv will have a longer
nnio t. fill icg quota, than any other connt3"
in the District. . Let "all, then go to work in
eurniit, and furnish the requisite number
w We have got two lull weeks in
whieh to work. An earnest effort, made in
'ai'h township, will exempt us from the
draft.
It will be seen by their advertisements,
that the Commissioners will pay to each man
h;) puts in a substitute, the suia of $300.
1 liis shoulj certainly, stimulate men subject
to the draft, to make great exertions to pro
f'Jre substitutes. While we have some
Qoubt as to the propriety of this action up
on ihe part of the Commissioners, still it
has been determined upon, and it will be
prudent for every man liable to draft to a
vail himself of its benefits. All the eiti
tns of a towship or borough, are interested
w agisting men subject to draft to secure
tfi:s bounty from the Commisioners, be
'"ause, unless they avail themselves of it.
the taxes they pay will probably be taken
to fill the quotas of other localities. See to
it, then, that your quotas arc filled, and see
to it at once. "The draft for this county will
not, in all probability, be made until after
,l sth of March. -
Oil ! Oil ! ! The oil "foyer" is on the
increase in this county. Springs have been
found in numerous additional localities,
from those heretofore mentioned, which emit
petroleum ; but experiment alone will demon
strate whether it exits in large quantities
or not. To develop this fact, in addition
to the well now beini sunk in this place,
Messrs. Ellis Irwin i Son, have sold that
deeirstb!e locality situate .on the Susquehan
na River and Lick Run. where some ven
ue
nrface indications exist. This "proper
ty embraces about 1300 acres, wii

This territory is sufficiently large to embrace
500 wells. We learn that an olhce is now
open in Philadelphia for the sale of stock in
