Railroad Accident. A correspondent
informs us that on $he. 16th May, sixteen
freight cars loaded with oil were consumed
at Laurel Kun above Tjptou, on the Penn'u
railroad. The engine and .two cars had just
passed over the bridge when the timbers
gave way and precipitated the, f eniainder ol
the train into the stream. Some of the bar
rels having burstcd in the fall, and a lantern
which was lit being broken,, the fire.eoon
consumed the entire mas, with the excep
tion of about one hundred, barrels fti oil
which floated down the strewn. Tae .m u
not stated. The fireman, ijr. Samuel Mil
ler of Ftori, was thrown from one ol the
cars into the stream, and drowne.d. Us
bodv was recovered on the third day after
ward, and taken to the residence of his fa
ther at Fostoria, and interred.

in behalf of the "Cuntensville Ladies' Re

the ''United States Sanitary Commission."
It is cheering to know that this institution
ij doing so great a work for our wounded
and sick soldiers, and it is no less satisfacto
ry to know that the contributions to the
"Curwensville Ladies' Aid 'Society," are
being disposed of, in the field and hospi
tal, by their own excellent delegate, Rev.
jardtier. The tLauks of the friends of
our wounded "boys" are due to these noble
la-lies for the efforts they are making to ad-
juiaister to the wants and comforts of our
.rave soldiers. God bless the ladies. But,

have been useful, volunteered their
services as nurses, helpers in any

hospitals and proceeded at once to
dress the wounds, assuage the
grief, and cheer the hearts of the

A storv is told of two men of the 20th
Massachusetts, which well iihistr.ites .the
pluck of our soldiers and their indifference
to danger. In the battle ot the ilderness,
the U0;h were in the thick of the fight, and
one color bearer after another was shot down
almost as fast as the men couhhbe replaced
But such was the eagerness to keep the" Hag
atioat that atone time two men Irishmen
caught hold of the standard at once, as it
was about to fall, and struggled for it. . J ut
then a shot struck the staff cutting it m two
and leaving one man with the Hag and. the
other with the broken stick. ' BedaU,"
said the man with the short end of tho stuff,
'.'the rebels have decided for us, this time,"
and went t loading and tiring again, as cool
ly as if nothing had happened.
Montficant. J he statement is preg
nant that of the vasf body of rebel prison
ers some S,0 X! captured in the late bat
tles,, not one made his escape' in the long
journey towards the rear, through districts
of more than doubtful loyalty, and afro rd in 5
abundant means of escape and concealment.

the ground of the preeminent vigilance of"
the guard piaced oer the captive,.
