A laughable incident is related of a jealous
woman, at Lewistown, Maine, who went into

she supposed, her husband very familiarly
Bitting beside a young lady. Stepping np
softly, she seized a head in each hand and
pounded them together a number of times in
a great rage, tier surprise may be imagined
when she found that the innocent stranger

and passed on amid the laughter and merri

A poor son of the Emerald Isle applied for
employment to an avaricious old huok. who
told him that he should employ no more Irish
men, "for the last one died on my hands, and
I was forced to bury him at my own charges."
"Ah, yer honor," said Pat, brightening up,
"and is that all Then you'll give me the
place, for sure I can get a certificate that I
never died in the employ of any master I iver
served ?"
Rural Simplicity : During the flight of
Professor King's balloon on the 14th nit.,
from Bangor East, it passed over the clearing

A countryman once brought a piece of board
to an artist, with tho request that he would
paint upon it St. Christopher as large as life.
"But," returned tfie artist, "that board is
much too small for that purpose." The

A lawyer was once pleading a case in Court

to be heard by others, "I'll wager he lis."
The lawyer, not in the least disconcerted,
drew his purse from his pocket, and laying it
on the bar, exclaimed : "Put down your nioD

Somebody who knows says, that when two
or more women, approaching you on a narrow
walk, fall behind each other to enable you to
pass, you may be sure they are ladies of un
common politeness and consideration. The
usual course pursued by women is to charge
along all abreast, sweeping everybody into
the mud.
"Can you hexplain the meaning of those

"Why, douse my toplights, where did yon go

We beard a good story the other night of
two persons eugaged in a duel. At the 6rst

should shake hands and make it up. The eth

for that, for their bands had been shaking ev

T71KIENDS AND RELATIVES OF THE
X' HKAV E SOLDIERS AND SAILORS.
HOLLOWAY'S
TILLS AND O I N T M K N T.
All who have Friends and Relatives in the Ar
my and Navy should take especial care that they
be amply sup7 lied with these Pills and Ointment ;
and where the brave Soldiers and Sailors have
neglected to provide themselves with them, no bet
ter present can be sent them by their rriends.
They have been proved to bo the Soldier's never
failing friend in the hour of need.
Coughs and Colds Affecting Troops,
Will be speedily relieved and effectually cured by
using these admirable medicines, and by ravine
proper attention to the Directions which are at
tached to each Pot or Box.
Sick Headache and Want of Appetite, Inciden
tal to soldiers.
These feelings whiah so sadden us usually arise
from trouble or annoyances, obstructed perspira
tion, or eating and drinking whateverns unwhole
some, thus disturbing the healthful action of the
Liver and Stomach. These organs must be reliev
ed, if you desire to be well. The Pills taken ac
cording to the printeu instructions, will quickly
produce a healthy action in both Liver and Stom
ach, and as a natural consequence, a clear head
and good appetite.
Weakness or Debility Induced by Over Fatigue
Will soon disappear by the use of these invalua
ble Pills, and the Soldier will quickly acquire ad
ditional strength Never let the Bowels be either
confined or un-iuly acted upon. It may seem
strange, that Holloway's Pills should be recom
mended for Dysentery and Flux, many persons
supposing that they would increase the relaxation.
This is a great mistake, for these Pills will correct
the Liver and Stomach, and thus remove all tho
acrid humors from the system. This medicine will
give tone and vigor to the whole organic system,
however deranged, while health and strength fol
low as a matter of course. Nothing will stop the
relaxation of the Bowels so sure as this medicine.
Volunteers, Attention !-Indiscretions of Youth.
Sores and Ulcers, Blotches nd Swellings, can
with certainty be radically cured, if the Pills are
taken night and morning, and the Ointment be
freely used as stated in the printed instructions.
If treated in any other manner, they dry up in
one part to break out in another. Whereas this
Ointment will remove the humors from th9system,
and leave the Patient a healthy and vigorous man.
It will require a little perseverance in bad cases
to insure a lasting cure.
For Wounds either oscasioned by the Bayonet,
Sabre, or the Bullet, Sores or Bruises,
To which every Soldier or Sailor are liable, there
are no medicines so safe, sure, and convenient, as
Holloway's Pills and Ointment. The poor wounds
ed and almost dying sutTerer might have hiswound
dresseJ immediately, if he would only provide
himself with this matchlessOintment, which should
be thrust into the wound and smeared all around
it. then covered with a piece of linen from his
knapsack and compressed with a handkerchief.
Taking, night and morning, 6 or 8 Pills, to cool
the system and prevent inflammation.
Every Soldier's Knapsack and Seaman's Chest
should be provided with these valuable remedies.
CAUTION. None are genuine unless the
words "Hollowat, New Ycrk and Lokdox," are
discernable as a Water-mark in every leaf of tne
book of directions around each pot or box; the
same may be plainly seen by holding thb leaf
to ths light A handsome reward will be given
to anyone rendering such information as may lead
to the detection of any party or parties counter
feiting the medicines or vending the same, know
