CLEABPIEIiD, DEC. 9, 1863. A laughable incident is related of a jealous woman, at Lewistown, Maine, who went into ' an auction room the other day, and saw, as she supposed, her husband very familiarly Bitting beside a young lady. Stepping np softly, she seized a head in each hand and pounded them together a number of times in a great rage, tier surprise may be imagined when she found that the innocent stranger wasnotber "woraer halt." She apologized and passed on amid the laughter and merri ment of the crowd. A poor son of the Emerald Isle applied for employment to an avaricious old huok. who told him that he should employ no more Irish men, "for the last one died on my hands, and I was forced to bury him at my own charges." "Ah, yer honor," said Pat, brightening up, "and is that all Then you'll give me the place, for sure I can get a certificate that I never died in the employ of any master I iver served ?" Rural Simplicity : During the flight of Professor King's balloon on the 14th nit., from Bangor East, it passed over the clearing of a settler who doos not take the newspa pers. The flock of children round the floor, spied the monster booming od, and alarmed the mother, wno, rushing to the door, scream ed out, "Come in. children, it's one of Jeff. Davis's bomb-shells." This is a fact. Calais Herald. A countryman once brought a piece of board to an artist, with tho request that he would paint upon it St. Christopher as large as life. "But," returned tfie artist, "that board is much too small for that purpose." The countryman looked perplexed at this unex pected discovery. "That's a bad iob," said he : "but look'ee, sir, ye can let bis feet hang down over the edge of the board." A lawyer was once pleading a case in Court before the full bench. The chief justice whis pered in his neighbor's ear, but loud enough to be heard by others, "I'll wager he lis." The lawyer, not in the least disconcerted, drew his purse from his pocket, and laying it on the bar, exclaimed : "Put down your nioD ey I take the bet!" Somebody who knows says, that when two or more women, approaching you on a narrow walk, fall behind each other to enable you to pass, you may be sure they are ladies of un common politeness and consideration. The usual course pursued by women is to charge along all abreast, sweeping everybody into the mud. "Can you hexplain the meaning of those French words that are hissing from that hea gle's mouth ?" asked a John Bull looking at n American standard, of a Yankee sailpr. "Why, douse my toplights, where did yon go to school ?" replied Jack. "I thought every body knew We're all flying to glory !" We beard a good story the other night of two persons eugaged in a duel. At the 6rst fire, one of the seconds proposed that they should shake hands and make it up. The eth er second said he saw no particular necessity for that, for their bands had been shaking ev er since tbey began ! An old Dutchman, who was elected a mem ber of the Legislature, said in his broken En glish style, "Ven I vent to the lechislature I thought I vonld find dera all Solomons dere, but I soon found dere was some as pig fools dere as I was." Why is a Secesh home occupied by Union troops like the copyright of a book ? Ans. because It is entered according to the act of Congress. No human heart is ever vacant.
