CLEARFIELD, NOV. 25, 1863. ' "PHYSICAL DISABILITY." A good deal of surprise has been felt.and pret ty freely expressed, too, of coarse, at the un expected number of rejections of drafted men, for the manifoldly-maimed causes comprehen ded under the general head of "physical disa bility." The interesting fact has, however, been established at the Surgical Bureau in Washington, that the proportion of onr people who are exempted from the drft on account of disibility from physibility causes Is scarcely greater than in England or France. In the latter countries the average per centage is a shade less than twenty-five per cent., while with us it does not in practice exceed thirty. Here the majority of our surgeons are volun teers, and thev release persons for disabilities that experienced surgeons in the regular army would not. The latter are supposed to be better able to judge what forms of weakness in constitution or health would be bettered by camp-liie. Again it is held, that as the volun teering of a million of men took the flower of population, it might reasonably be expected that a large proportion of the conscripts would be exempted for disability. A Chattanooga correspondent, writing on the 3d, savs: "A rebel deserter came in yes terday', and reports that our dead are still unburied on the battle-field of Chickamauga. Re was one of those appointed to gather up the arm, balls, clothes, and other debris of the fi"ht, but was compelled to abandon the work-in account ot the unbearable stench aris ing from the decomposing bodies of our fallen brothers and sons. He saw several lying vhere the wagons hourly passed over tbem." A Few days since, a lot of negroes collected at the Richmond gas-works for religious pur poses. They were captured by the police who took forty-three into custody, and after a hearing before Judge Chandler, each man received ten lashes. This item may be com mended to the attention of Bishop Hopkins, the apologist of slavery. Sorgeon-General Hammond has been order ed ot Nashville, Tennessee, on a tour of in spection among the hospitals of our western armies. According to official reports there are. 84,472 beds for patients in the United States general hospitals, and there are at present 40,195 persons under treatment. A New London Connecticut) man has in vented a weapon that may be inserted in the handle of a lady's .parasol, and will drive a ball through an inch and a half plank at the distance of ten rods. Steel clad and armed with these parasols, the dear creatures will bo invulnerable. Confederate currency has so itepreciated that the Richmond people say, -If you go to : the market, yon have to take your money in the basket and carry your beef homo in the pocket-book. The mother of a large family was asked one day the number of her children. 'La me," she replied, rocking to and fro, '-I've got fourteen, mostly boys and girls !" Was your son engaged before he went to the war?" asked Mrs. Rngg of a neighbor. "No. but he has had several engagements eince," bhe replied. Arteraus Ward says there is no daily papers published in town, but there is a ladies' sewing circle, which answers the same purpose. If those persons who are always in search of news would only read the Bible they would find the very latest news to them. A piece of Mahomet's shirt was burnt at the late fire at Constantinople. LKLEY'S PATENT-LUMBER DRIED BY SUPERHEATED STEAM. The under signed respectfully informs the people of Clear field and adjoining counties that he has the agen cy of the above patent and will sell individual, county or township rights for its use. The lum ber dried by this process is stronger, finishes bet ter, is easier on tools, and requires less time in drying than any other process known, drying 1 inch lumber perfectly in oti hours better than many months under the old svstem using the same amount of fuel per day that a common kiln consumes. Ihe certificate of a number of resi dent mechanics well known in this community is amply sufficient to convince the most sceptical of its utility. .Persons desirous of purchasing rights will address JOHN L. This medicine will give tone and vigor to the whole organic system, however deranged, while health and strength fol low as a matter of course.
