"Madam, a good maDy persons were very
much disturbed et tho concert last night, by
tbo crying of your baby." "Well, I do won
der auch people will go to concerts."
There is a young man now in Chicago en
raged lathe highly respectable but not very
lucrative business of bill posting, who was
worth $70,000 two years ago. Kum was his
ruin.
i
A greenhorn standing by a sewing machine
at which a young lady was at work, looking
alternately at the machine and its fair opera
tor, at length gave vent to his admiration with,
"By g0ny i it's purty, 'specially tho part cov

Easter. This annual festival occurs this
year on the last or 31st day of March. Eas
ter was celebrated by our pagan ancestors in
April, as a festival in honor of Eostre, the
Saxon goddess of love, or Venus of the north.
It is now observed by the Christian church
as a festival in commemoration of our Sa
viour's resurrection, and answers to the Pass
over of the Hebrews.
England has Something to Say About the
Mississippi. The English papers claim a right
to navigate the Mississippi, which, they say,
secession cannot abrogate. By the treaty of
Paris, sigued on tho 30th of November, 1782,
it was stipulated that navigation of the Missis
sippi, from its source to the ocean, shall lor-,
over remain free and open to the subjects of
Great Britain and the citizens of the United
States."
The Locofoco Administration has bank
rupted the Government, robbed the Treasury,
surrendered the unprotected Forts of the Gov
ernment to traitors, and brought it into gener
al contempt at home and abroad : and now the
Locofoc'6 members of Congress oppose every
measure for raising means to pay the debts or
provide for the aurrent expenses of the incom
ing Administration, under the plea of patriot
ism and love for the Union.

the great excitement about the removal of the

THE TRIBUNE FOR 1861 PROSPEC
TUS. The XXth Volume of the Weekly Tri
bune commenced with the issue of Sept. 1. Dur
ing the past year The Tribune has been obliged to
devote quite a largo proportion of its space to pol
itics, but we shall soon be able to forego Political
discussions almost entirely, for months if not for
years, and devote nearly all our columns to sub
jects of less intense, but more abiding, interest. A
mong these, we mean to pay especial attention te
I. Education. The whole subject of Education,
both Popular and General, will be discussed in
our columns throughout tho year 18C1, and we
hope to elicit in that discussion some of tho pro
foundest thinkers and the ablest instructors in our
country. It is at onco our hope and our resolve
that the cause of Education shall receive an im
petus from the exertions of The Tribune in its be
half during the year 1861.
II. Agkiccltuke. We have been compelled to
restriot our elucidations of this great interest
throughout 18B0.and shall endeavor to atone there
for in 1861. Whatever disoovery, deduction, de
monstration, is calculated to render the reward of
labor devoted to cultivation more ample or more
certain, shall receive prompt and full attention.
III. Manufactures, Ac. We hail every in
vention or enterprise whereby American Capital
and Labor are attracted to and advantageously
employed in any department of Manufacturing or
Mechanical Industry as a real contribution to the
Publio Weal, insuring ampler, steadier, more con
venient, more remunerating markets to the Farm
er, with fuller employment and better wages to
the Laborer. The progress of Mining. Iron-Making,
Steel-Making, Cloth-Weaving, Ac, in our
country and the world, shall bo watched and repor
ted by us with an earnest and active sympathy. .
IV. Foueigs Aff aies. We employ the best cor
respondents in London, Paris, Turin, Berlin, and
other European Capitols, to transmit us early and
accurate advices of the great changes there silent
ly but certainly preparing. In spito of the pres
sure of Domestic Politics, our News from the Old
World is now varied and ample ; but we shall
have to render it more perfoct during the event
ful year just before us.
V. Home News. We employ regular paid cor
respondents in California, at the Isthmus of Da
rien, in the Rocky Mountain gold region, or wher
ever else they seem requisite. From the more ac
cessible portions of our own country, we derive
our information mainly from the multifarious cor
respondents of the Associated Press, from our ex
changes, and the occasional letters of intelligent
friends. We aim to print the cheapest general
nowspaper, with the fullest and most authentic
summary of useful intelligence, that is anywhere
afforded. Hoping to "mako each day a critic on
the last," and print a better and better paper from
year to year, as our means are steadily enlarged
through the generous co-operation of our many
well-wishers, wo solicit, and ehall labor to de
serve, a .continuance of publio favor.
