    TILE JOURNAL.
CLEARFIELD, PA., MAY 12, 1858.
Improvements. The spirit of improvement
teeius to be prevailing in our town at tlii3
time. Quite a number of buildings of differ
ent kinds are being erected. Among those
under way is a fine brick dwelling-bouse of
W. A.' Wallace, Esq., on 2d street, and anoth
er of J. B. McEnally, Esq., on Water street.
Our "town fathers" have, also made a start,
by "ordaining" that side-walks shall be con
structed on certain streets. We were scarcely
prepared to hear this, as certain members of
that august and important body, the Town
Council, but a very short time since, had the
pecuniary welfare of our citizens so much at
toeart, that they asked the printers to publish
ordinances for little or nothing, assigning as
a reason that times were hard, money scarce,
and taxes high. The amount that would have
-been ra:d for printing, would have been tri
fling to each individual citizen, more particu
larly as propositions were made to do the ad
vertising at less than the usual rates. Well
it was right enough to sec that our citizens
were not overburthened with taxes ; but jve
are not aware that times have improved so
much, or that money has become so plenty,
that just at this time the whole town should be
jtaved. We do not w ish to be understood as
opposing the construction of side-walks we
are in favor of making them in proper time ;
but if times arc too hard and money too scarce
to pay a trifling sum for advertising, we are
inclined to think the construction of side
walks is an expense that few will like to in
enr at present.
New Goods. Win. F. Irwin, on Market St.,

to render satisfaction with any article in his
