TILE JOURNAL. CLEARFIELD, PA., MAY 12, 1858. Improvements. The spirit of improvement teeius to be prevailing in our town at tlii3 time. Quite a number of buildings of differ ent kinds are being erected. Among those under way is a fine brick dwelling-bouse of W. A.' Wallace, Esq., on 2d street, and anoth er of J. B. McEnally, Esq., on Water street. Our "town fathers" have, also made a start, by "ordaining" that side-walks shall be con structed on certain streets. We were scarcely prepared to hear this, as certain members of that august and important body, the Town Council, but a very short time since, had the pecuniary welfare of our citizens so much at toeart, that they asked the printers to publish ordinances for little or nothing, assigning as a reason that times were hard, money scarce, and taxes high. The amount that would have -been ra:d for printing, would have been tri fling to each individual citizen, more particu larly as propositions were made to do the ad vertising at less than the usual rates. Well it was right enough to sec that our citizens were not overburthened with taxes ; but jve are not aware that times have improved so much, or that money has become so plenty, that just at this time the whole town should be jtaved. We do not w ish to be understood as opposing the construction of side-walks we are in favor of making them in proper time ; but if times arc too hard and money too scarce to pay a trifling sum for advertising, we are inclined to think the construction of side walks is an expense that few will like to in enr at present. New Goods. Win. F. Irwin, on Market St., is receiving and opening a stock of Spring and Summer Goods, which he offers to the public on the most reasonable terms. His stock hav ing been selected with a view of meeting the wants of this community, he is doubtless able to render satisfaction with any article in his lino of business. He has fitted up a newstore room in the building one door west'of the old stand, into which he desigus removing in a few days. TnE Ice-Cream Season being at band, R. B. Taylor has fitted up very neatly a room in the basement of Merrell & Carter's building, on Second street, where ho will be pleased to furnish ice-cream to all who favor him with their custom. lie has also opened a large .stock of splendid confectionarics, nuts, dates, oranges, ice., to which he invites attention. The List of Retailers of Foreign and Do mestic Merchandise in Clearfield county will be found elsewhere in this paper. This region was visited yesterday by an un usually heavy rain, accompanied by high wind and sn.all hail. We direct attention to the card ol Dr. . Schryver, in our advertising columns. A. T7"A Texas paper says the young ladies thcre-abouts are making great ravages on the grape vines, taking them for hoops. rr"We!l posted the chap that thinks the , greatest battle ever fought was the one be tween Napoleon and Alexander the Great. C-Hon. Jefferson Davis is slowly recover ing, though not able to give much attention to business. The sight of one eye, it is feared, is gone E7"On Saturday week,-, the Court of Quar ter Sessions of Lancaster county, granted two hundred and fifty-two tavern licenses under lho new law. H?It is said some babies are so small that they can creep into quart measures. But the way in which some adults can walk into such measures is astonishing. C7"In Franklin county, Maine, distant a bout sixty miles from Portland, the snow lay a foot deep last week, and farmers came to the court house in their sleds. JT7"The total number of emigrants into the United States last year was 271,551, of which COCO arrived in Philadelphia. A large major ity of these foreigners were from Germany. rr7"Thomas J. C70n the 4th of May, Tuckerman, the mail robber, having been brought before Judge Ingersoll, of the United States District Court, was sentenced for the space of twenty-one years, at hard labor in the State Prison. C7"Mayor Tiemann, of New York, is mak ing a vigorous and successful onslaught upon the policy dealers who infest that city. O- ver six hundred of these violators of the law have been arrested by the mayor's officers. DZ7"Jacob Swipes, a German butcher, resi ding near Detroit, eloped with the wives of a f armer named Fulinacr and a man named Sny der, cn the 2Gth ult. He, doubtless, thinks it is cheaper to steal sheep and calves than to buy them. E7"Tho California papers have adopted the English custom of publishing births, as well as marriages, and also add a truly American, or rather "Yankee" peculiarity, by giving the weight of the new-born citizens. A very good idea ! C7A few days since, a farmer, living near Galena, III., carried a load of potatoes to that place to sell. The highest offer he could get waa ten cents a bushel, and rather than sell them at that rate, he tipped them into the Fever river. The result was that he was fined $14 00 for obstructing navigation. CC7A terrible whirlwind visited Tuskcgce, Macon Co., Alabama, on the 20th ult. The house of Joshua Willis, was totally destroyed, five or six of the inmates seriously injured, and a negro "blown away" and killed. Sev eral other houses were unroofed, the inmates of which were injured two or three mortally. J" correspondent from Minnesota writes to his friends in Indianapolis for the character of the Bauk of Dover Hill, Indiana, saying that certain parties in the Territory had $10,- 000 of its paper, which they were putting into circulation. The response is that there is no such bank in existence, and that it is the wild est kind of a "wildcat" concern. tr7"Theodorc Parker says that when a real revival of religion takes place, "forts will be turned into public gardens, ships of war into penny posters across the sea, jails into hospi tals, black slavery and white slavery done away with, there will be no more murder, no more prostitution, no more crime or drunken ness not an Irishman will be drunk, nor even a member of Congress."
