At the siege of Fort Henry, near
\V lieelinc, by a baud of Indians, under tire
infamous :=inion dirty, Mii . jor Samuel Me
performed au act of daring—nay,
desperate horsetuanship—which has sel
dom, if ever, been equaled by man or
heast,.aud before which the effort of the
Pomfret hero pales into insignificance.—
Let us turn to the record.
Fort Henry was situated about a quarter
of a mile above Wheeling Creek, On the
tett bank of the 016.0 river, atui was erect
ed to protect the settlers of the little vil
la_;e of Wheeling, which, at the time of its
e-t mein, consisted of about twenty-live
c.tbins. In the month of September,
77:) it was invested by about four hun
dred warriors, on the approach of whom
the settlers had tied into it, leaving their
cabins and their contents to the torch of the
savages. The whole force comprising the gar
rison consisted of forty-two lighting men all
told; but there were among them men who
knew the us, of the rifle, and who were
celebrated throthout the borders as the
implacable enemy of the red man, and as
the best marksmen in the world. Of
these, however, more than one-half
in an ill-advised sortie before the siege
commenced, and when the fort was sur
rounded by the foe, but sixteen men re
mained to defend it against their over
whelming numbers. Hut their mothers,
wives and dairters were there, and nerved
the Spartan band to deeds of heroism to
which the records of the wars of ancient
and modern ilistor present no parallol.---

Messengers had been dispatched, at
the •:Irliest alarm, to the neighboring
settlements fur succor, and, in response to
the call, Captain, Van Swearingt4m, with
fourteen men, arrived from Cross Cret''l- , ,
and fought his way into the fort without
tie loss of a man soon afterwards, a par

intrepid McCulloch, were seen approach

within the fort made every preparation to
receiv e them, by opening the gates, and

the lines, and entered i the fort in triumph,
without the loss of an individual. All,
ex,!ept their 'daring: leader, succeeded in
the effort. was eut off, and forced to
tb\ in an bpposite direction. McCulloch
was a.- well known to the Indians as to the
whites cor hi, d ee d s of prowess, and his
name w: ,, asso,•bit(7.l in their minds with
some of the most bloody fights in which
the white and red men had contended. To
securc him alive, therefore, that they
might glut their vengeance upon him, was
the earnest desire of the Indians, and to
this end they put forth the most superhu
man t:iertions. There were very few
=long their number who had not lost a
relative by the unerring aim and skill of
the tearless woodsman, and they cherishd
towards him au almost phrenzied hatred,
which could only be satisfied in his tor
tures at the stake.
With .uch feelings and incentives, they
cr,wded around him as he dashed forward
iu tin rear of his men, and succeeded in 1
cuttin , him off from the gate. Finding
himself unable, after the most strenuous
eiertion=, tu accomplish his entrance, and
seeing the uselessness of a conflict with
such a force opposed to him, he suddenly
wheeled his horse and fled in the direction
Wheeling Hill at his utmost speed. A
loud of warriors started up at his ap_
proach, and cut off his retreat in this di
rection, driving him hack upon another
party who blocked up the path behind;
while a third closed in upon him on one of
the other side, of the square. The fourth
and open side was iu the direction of the
brow ul a precipitous ledge of rocks, near
ly one hundred and fifty feet, in height, at
the foot. of which flowed the waters cf
\Vhceiiug Creek. As he momentarily
halted and took a rapid survey of the dan
,ers which surrounded him on all sides,
he felt that Lis chance was indeed a des
perate one. The Indians had not fired a
sht, and he well knew what this portend
cd, they could easily have killed him

PI Itt, IL,. uur against the
sides of his stecti, who 3 prang forward to
ward the precipice. The encircling warri
ors had rapidly lessened the space between
them and their intended victim, and, as
they saw him so completely within their
toils, raised a yell of triumph, little dream
ing of the fearful energy which was to baf
fle their expectations. As they saw him
push his horse iu the direction of the pre
cipice, which they had supposed an insur
mountale obstacle to his escape, they stood
in wonder and amazement, scarcely believing
that it could be his intention to attempt
the awful leap, which was, to all appear
;lncas' certain death McCulloch still
bore his rifle, which he had retained, in
his right hand, and carefully gathering up'
the bridle in his left, he urged his noble
animal forward, encouraging him by his
NUMBER
voice, until they reached the edge of th e
bank, when, dashing his heels against his
sides they made the the fearful leap intu
the air. Down, down they went with
fearful velocity, without resistance or im
pediment until one bait of the space way
passed over, when the home's feet struck
the smooth precipit.,us face of the rock,
and the remainder of the distance was slid
and scrambled over until they reached the
bottom alive :toi uninjured. With a
shout which proclaimed his triumphant
success to his foe above him, Nlceulloch
pushed his steed into the stream and in a
few moments horse and rider were seen
surmounting the banks on the opposite
side
No pursuit was attempted, nor was a
shot tired at the intrepid rider. His ene
mies stood in awe-struck :silence upon the
brow of the bank from whence he had
leaped, and, as h e disappeared from their
view L , they returned to the investment of
the fort. They did nut long continue
their unavailing efforts, however, for its
capture; the numerous additions it,had re
ceived to its garrison; the fearlessness ex
hibited in its defense; together with the
feat • they had witnessed,- disheartened
them, and they beat a hasty retreat on the
morning after the event I have attempted
to describe—not, however, until they had
reduced to ashes the cabins without the
stockade, an d slaughtered some three
hundred head of cattle belonging to the
settlers.
Cuitivate and iniprove.
Deterioration in plants and animals, is as
possible as improvement. Nations, once
renowned as the perfection of the human
j race, by neglect, have sunk back into bar
barism. Egypt was once so learned, that
it is recorded, as a striking mark of his
greatness, that Moses "was learned i❑ all
cthe wisdom of the Egyptians," Egypt is
now a semi-barbarous province of Turkey,
su poor that none do her reverence. The
Bedouin robber makes his haunts where
was once the Alexandrian School, from
which has come much of our civilization
and science. Tyre, celebrated in lioly
Writ for her knowledge in the arts and
navigation. has lost her designation as
-Queen of the Sea," and scarcely a vestige
of her greatness, hor art, or her power re -
mains.

Th e best breed of animals extant, turn
ed into the wilderness, will soon lose their
distinctive qualities, and assimilate to• the
original wild stock. But a few
,genera
tions are required to change the Berkshire,
or China, into the long nosed, flap-eared
wild hog, from which all our varieties
have sprutil.
So with our fruit. Let the best va
riety of apple known, _;row up in the
hedge, or in the woods, and in a sho r

than crabs.
We may follow this law of deterioration
through the whole vegetable and animal
creation, and we shall find it unerring—
what is not progressin, , , is retrograding.—
Every fanner, then, may make up his
wind that unless, by leis efforts, properly
directed, in taxing nature, he is improving
his stock, and other products, they will de
teriorate in his keeping. If we eat our
best and earliest grain, generation after
, c , licral - ion, or sell it because the imme
diati profit is greater, the rich wheat kern
el will soon become a shriveled concern, as
unlike its ancestor as a crab is to a pip
pin.
By cultivation, :ill nor choice varieties
of apples have been produced from the
wild crab of Asia—by neglect, they will
return to that again. Our best varieties
of peach have been, by cultivation, pro
ducLl from a fruit of Persia, that possess
ed, in its whole mass, the poisonous prop
erty that is now in the seed; and a person
eating some of the rich, pulpy varieties of
pears, eau' hardly imagine that it is a de
scendant of what Pliny described, eigh
teen hundred years ago, when he said,
"all pears whatsoever, are but a heavy
meat, unless they be well boiled or bak
ed."
While such has been the progress for
ward, of many of the fruits, others have
greatly deteriorated, or progressed back
ward. Not long• since, some wheat kern
els were found in the coffin of one of the
Gallic Kings, who had been buried four
teen hundred years. The wheat, in its
botanical character, is identified with the
wheat of the present day; and yet on be
ing planted, it produced from sixteen to
twenty stalks, to each grain; and had au
ii crage of twenty more grains to a stalk,
and each grain heavier than our common
wheat
This shows that wheat culture has
dwarfed the crop in tho last fourteen cen
turies so as to alinoq make the plant a dif
ferent species; and every year's cropping is
making it less, and less likely that we
shall keep even the present deteriorated
article good without constant care and
skill in the use of fertilizers, and in the se
le, lion seed.
