SATURDAY MORNING - SEPTE MER 20. _ PENNSYLVANIA STATE AGRICULTURAL SOCIETY, AT PITTSBURGH On SEPTEMBER 30th, and on OOTOBE B Ist, 21d and 3d, 1536. jay BORT. O. WALIOIit Secretary Tho note of preparation for this event—second to none other in importance—is already heard lit the Ninth Ward. We paid a visit to that section of the city yesterday, and were not a little surprised to ob serve the bustle and activity going on to render this what we confidently believe it will be—the most suc cessful exhibition of the Society yet held in Western Pennsylvania.kin the first place, the inducements offered to the exhibitor, as we observed a few days pa.....since, are far greater than any previous year. They atnbunt to eterora thotwand dollar+ in prizes and pre miums to the arts. manufactures, and agricultural productions. For the exposition of Pittsburgh man ufactures there is reserved a separate building of am ple proportions, and a special list of premiums of suf ficient magnitude to excite the emulation of an who desire to maintain for us the reputation we have al ready acquired abroad. A great many people will be here from a distance, expecting to find the product. of Pittsburgh still in the industrial arts figure con spicuously—it rests with our manufacturers to say whether they shall go away disappointed or with increased respect for the Birmingham and Manches ter of America. The first thing that strikes the eye on entering the Fair Grounds is t he Bating :Worm, which, for several seasons has been leased by Mr. Price, the confection er. of Allegheny oily. It has been considerably enlarged in anticipation of the increased attendance over any f,rnicr year. Mechanic's Ilan No. I—fur ther on to the left—i, a large building something in the Shope td a triangle, and is re:weed exclusively to exhibitors from lhi, rity. Bark of it and to tho right is Mechanic's hall N0..2. It is appropriated to the exjtibitt•ut of machinery of different kinds, to propel which a portable engine of the required power has been put up. Artist's Hall is likewise enlarged to four times its former dimensions and otherwise vastly improved. Messrs. Rhodos, Wail, McClurg— indeed all our artists—hens signified t heir intention of being represented by some favorite creation, co that the Hall cannot fail being particularly attractive to all admirers of the Beautiful. Wo further observed that one hundred new stall• hare been erected at the eastern end of the grounds. With those previously in existence they number three hundred and seventy, capable of holding over one thousand hoed of horses and cattle. From the num ber airendy marked " taken," we judge the display of stock will be ahead of anything seen in these parts heretofore. The ring fur the exhibition of trot ting, pacing and racking horses, and for driving, has been graded and nicely covered with a heavy bed of tan. Around the entire grounds, too, a no earrings way haa been graded, so that the visitors can now drive around and see everything without having to alight At•the western end of the exhibition ring a most convenient amphitheatre is erecting. It will be one hundred and fifty feet long, with eleven tiers of broad seats, ranging one above the other, and al lowing the occupant an unobstured view of every thing going on within the circle. This is a great improvement on anything we hare yet peen at any fair, and use ere only surprised it has never been thought of before. All those improvements are made, or are making, under the akillful stye:via:on of Mr. Oliver P. Shiraz. Young's Brass Band is engaged for the whole four days of the show, and are expect ed to soothe the ravage natures of all who are sus. ceptible of being inflnenced by a •• concord of sweet secede:" water in greet aLuntiance Los Leen intro duced front the city reservoir; and other improre. ment , . " nunterons to mention," Let c Leen made. Take it all in all, the facilities for exhibitors are immensely ahead of any former time, which is =M- I) , owing to the lavish expenditure of the State So ciety. The people, eager to ECO things rut-ions as:•l useful, will be hero it, crnicds. It nes in a great measure with the people of Allegheny county to sty whither :hey shall go as ay disappointed or Lot. What say you. artisans of Pittsburgh? What Fay you, farmers cf Allegheny county ? Shall it be. yea, Ruffianism Again Itmapant.—The alung.sbot gen try are again showing their hantht, after a temporary retirement from bezinees. fin Wedneaday evening Mr. David B. Sutton. Soma dtaler of this city, was street; I.y one of there raiseYerdits with n elang-shot and rerionely injured. The attack woe entirely un prov•lted and Mr. S. iE at a loss to know what motive the ruffian could have had unless one of pure devil ishness, Mr. Henderson Wilson a storekeeper in the Fifth Ward els.. received severe injuries from come of ;he Flune fraternity. It seems that one John Lawler %rid en associate, attacked a sick man, and were at , ,t striking him when Wilson interfered and te.ik the person assailed into his store. He after. wends acct out and was followed by one of th e party, who I.r,i him in a shocking nienuer, cutting him se verely with alung•shotir and knucklcr?.. Wilson en. den vw-e.l to protect hire. and having been struck by Awler while an d,ing, he made an information nguired him for as<an!t nod battery. Rainier was an - toted and held to hail in S'ieo to answer. 11%,1 Totr,,,hip.—A Democratic meeting, was held on Saturday, sth instant, at Bakerstown. Charles Bryson wits chosen Chairman. Alexander McGill Vice President, and W. J. McLaren Secret, ry. Ater tome forcible remarks frign the Chairman, Col, Janet A. Gibson war called out, and entered into an able and impressive exposition of the prise.- pies of the Democratic party in this campaign, con trasting them with the prn'onsions and conduct of the Black Republicans. A sel.ce of appropriate resolutions were passed, one of which was se follow? : ./.',roiyeri, That the accomplishments acquired by entmg Frasshoppers. horse flesh, lizards, toads and mule I, V, c., said to be possessed by John C. Fre snort, d., not qualify him to occupy the highest pos. tion in the gift of the people of this Union ; and that however well these qualities may recommend him t, the respect and admiration of the gourmands, negroes and l 3 it Republicans, we do not see in him the shining virtues of James Buchanan, who possesses integrity of heart, honesty of purpose, experience in xtatexulartsliii, and scholastic attainments, which ht him. in .iu eminent degree, to fill the highest station in the g.ft of a great and mighty people. l'ithd, argh Female Collcyc.—The opening of this institution took place on Thursday, Allen Kramer, Req., President of the Board of Trustees commencing the exercises by some remarks explaining its object. Buy. Alfred Cookman, pastor of Christ's M. Church then delivered a very beautiful address, wel coming the Rev. Mr. Barrows who has been selected to proide over the College as Principal. Mr. Bar rows in reply made some pertinent remarks, and the whole w as closed by the benediction being pronounced by Rev. Mr. Cox. Eighty students entered their names on Thursday, with a prospect of a number more before the close of the session. The College is situated on Hancock street, immediately back of Christ's Church, and is an ornament to that porthm of the city. n a y ' s Mercantile College.... The classical and matheatatical department of this institution is now under the superintendance of Prof. F. L. Stewart, A. Rouse of Refuge Henan OF Rs:Funk FOR WtsrEns( Penna., 1 Pittsburgh, September 10, 1850. j The undersigned, County Commissioners for the Western District of Pennsylvania, on the invitation of the Board, visited the institution. They exam ined the arrangements and the workshops of the in stitution, and they have no hesitation iu saying that they have never seen, anywhere, boys who appeertol more contented and cheerful at their work. They were engaged in weaving cane seats for chairs, trunk making, shoe making; and everywhere the most perfect order prevailed. They also attended Newt Lion in the chapel, where both boys and girls gave remarkable evidence of proficiency in the d,lfer‘nt branches of a common English education. They can cordially recommend the institution no ono of the best they have ever .eeen for reforming and saving youth, and for protecting society. They are confident that had thy Commissioners of the other counties in the Western District been present on this day, they would have felt it to be a duty of pressing importance to sustain this great moral enterprise. The counties we represent have all contributed to the erection of the Refuge. It is hoped that the counties which have not yet given it their nttennon will do su at en early day.
