SATURDAY MORNING 4 SEPTEMBER
SIXTH ANNUAL EXHIBITION
PENNSYLVANIA
STATE AGRICULTURAL SOCIETY
AT PITTSBURGH
On SEPTEMBER 30th, and on
0 C 'r 0 B E It Ist, 2d and 3d, 1856.
Je24 ROUT. C. WALKER., Secretary.
Allegheus Buchanan Cub.—The
meeting on Thursday- night of Democrats in Excel
sior Hall was one of the largest yet held in that
place. Mr. Wtn. Blakely, the President, took the
Chair at 74 o'clock, when the meeting was opened
by the Wee Club singing some beautiful songs com
posed by our townsman, Stephen C. Foster, Esq.
The President then stated that Col. Samuel W. Black
would whim's the meeting, and on the appearance
of the gallant Colonel be was greeted with the loud
est shouts of weleeine on this his first address to the
I)olmA:racy of Allegheny city during the presen
campaign. The Colonel's speech was one of the best
we have ever heard from that distinguished orator.
He went into a calm statement of facts, showing the
history of the Black Republican party and its dis
union tendencies from the year 1803 when Josiah
Quincy (at present an ardent supporter of Fremont.
though nearly 00 years old) declared the Union dis
solved bceause of the purchase of Louisiana, a slave
territory, by 31r. Jefferson. Next ho showed how
the same party opposed the admission of Louisiana
as a State. and even after she was admitted how the
Massachurett.< Legislature asked that she should be
exp./ied frvln the Union. Ho also exposed the dis
union pr - ,.'Ungs of tho llartford Convention, en
aaeoant of the rultnission of Louisiana, also tho reso
lution, of that Convention declaring that no one for
eign horn should hold office under our gorernment.
Ile then took up a number of other facts in the same
eonneetimi. and in the burning words of truth and el
opionee ls4i bark, the dangerous tendencies of the
lately roil od disunion party. The Colonel occupied
no hour and n half and was li.toned to with the most
profound and respectful attention by the immense
crowd.
Such 'Fremont men as were present behaved in the
most quiet and proper manner. At the last meeting
of the B. and B. Club, a lemon had been taught the
Fremonters who had been in the habit of disturbing
all the former meetings of the Democracy in this
nail, which we were glad to see they profited by.
The committee of vigilance showed them in a very
striking manner. on that occasion, that though they
were denied the ossisonce of the police of the city,
they were determined that blackguards and ruffians
should not he permitted to disturb the Democracy
any longer, in their peaceable ussoinblages in their
non hall.
Atter the conclusion of Col. Black's speech, the Glee
clott again sang. The meeting then passed a reso
lution of than ki to Col. Black and quietly dispersed.
W e heard tom gentlemen from Armstrong county de-
elate that they came la that meeting Fremont men,
hut that they had Ilelf resolved to vole for James
Purhenau. ;to it is. Only let the people have the
ram , . and Rhc numliers of the Demecrany swell nt
n,ery meeting.
A Porta:le/ Plot.._ Those of our readers who
here a spare afternoon should employ it, if they
have not already done so, in visiting Troy Hill. a
it is decidedly the most pleasant place in the vicinity
of the two cities. When you reach the top or the
hill. you command n line view overlooking the
the Allegheny, Lawrenceville, the Arsenal, and the
country beyond. A must rural road 'conducts you
farther over the hid. Beautiful country residences
and tine gardens are on every hand. There
are severol Merman pleasure grounds-, nicely laid
out, which are the re, rt Or oar German citizens
during the summer season'? A beautiful valley.
known us V , tegtttley,•to, on the other side of
the bills. contains a little city, which is known 115
t.ipring Garden. The gardens are all under the
higlieot cuiti, tition. and, seen from the hills, are
charming. Quite a number of elegant private resi
dences adorn the 't lioilow." We have not seen any
scenery for some 11,11 1 0,) charming : in every direr.. 1
Lion are vineyards, and every break in the hills be
y,,n4 tliFeorers elegant residences. We presume
thorn are ninny, ruby liho us, were unaware of this
beautiful spot on near the city, and to them we would
recommend an early trip to Troy Hill.
Blakely- A Richey will sell at auction come beauti
ful lots in the alive vicinity this afternoon at three
o'clock, on the premises.

While there is a decrease of nearly $30,000 for the
month as compared with the same month last year,
there is an inrrcase so far in as compared with
of nearly three quarters of a million dollars.
The decrease in August is attributable to the low
stage of water non. lust season the Ohio was earl.

ance of the Ohio i,cr, not only to the prosperity of
Pittsburgh, but also to thl Pennsylvania Railroad.
I:e.i.yrteno.—W e arc rratiied to notice the
opening of a Restaurant on Fifth street, under Ma

care of jaiior Phillips on Wednesday evening, for
uttemp•ing to kill the wife of his bosom. It is al
leged :I,i, without the slightest provocation, he at
tacked her with a poker, inflicting several wounds
on hi r person and fracturing her skull. The un
fortunate comas was conveyed to the county poor

ing phk -icion. Iler left side is badly cut and
Lrui , cd . three of her ribs are broken, and the side
of her teit.l is so badly fractured that her life is
consider...l in great danger. Kennedy was arrested
shortly after thd outrage, and committee to jail by
Esquire Meralie, as above £ tate,"
Mr, 0,,,w y.—The play-goers of this
city will he gratified to learn that those excellent ar
tists hove been engaged at oar Theatre for a brief
week, commenc;ng on Mundayevening. We believe
they have never performed in this city before, at
least not for a number of years, bet in other cities
not - lest , gilled with theatrical taste than our own.
they ha on acquired a reputation that has rarely fallen
to the 1,1 of actors and acires.es. In Philadelphia
where Mr. and Mrs. Conway performed last season
at the Arch, they stood at the head of a profession
which ha 3 KO many able representatives there.
i.l Rexrn•e 7'ou-nohip.—The farm house, on
the pia, of lion. Walter 11. Lowrie, in Reserve
township, about three miles from this city, was en
tirely ii ,, r , suined yesterday afternoon, at 1 o'clock,
with its eantonts. It was occupied by Fred. Oesterlo,
who, hy lids calamity, loses nearly everything ex
cept whet he had on his person. Tho probable loss,
including the furniture. &c., was about $1,500 on
whieh ne believe no insurance had been effected. It
originated from a defective chimney.
Jh and Diaarderly.—Mayor Bingham disposed
of six of this class of criminals, and Ald. Donaldson
one. The increase of drunkenness is in a groat
measure attributable to the numerous unlicensed
doggeries which deal out the vilest kind of poison.

Kansas Meeting at Easton.
EASTON. Pa., September 12 .—Notwithstanding the
short notice given that Governor Roeder would ad
' dress his fellow citizens in behalf of Kansas, a very
large meeting convened at the Court House last
night. Cal. Abraham Miles presided, and Governor
Reeder held the mixed throng in attention by his
eloquent and meagerly exposition of the conspiracy to
fare. slavery on Kullaus.
With remarkable clearness and logical force of ex
pression he reviewed the history of the crime against
Kansas from its conception in 1850, through all it,
deliberately planned stages to the present time. The
conclusion that fell upon the minds of his auditory,
from hid masterly review of the conduct of the pro.
slavery parry, was deep and abiding, that the admin
istration party with the South are deliberately en
gaged ip a conspiracy to force slavery on on
people, at all hazard's.
A committee wa., appointed to call upon the citi
eons for subscriptions in aid of Kansas, and from the
feeling manifested, a respectable contribution may
be anticipated
