true friend to the working class, who are the real

Resolved, That in John C. Breekinridge we have
the true Democrat and able statesman with the abih.

of the opposition, and array one portion of our cit.:
2.81:18 against tho other by an appeal to their passiid,•.
But a feeling of sympathy for our fellow man pron.; t,
_,is to hope that a subsequent sojourn in the country
hu sufficiently repaired the mental relaxities un

Theatre.—This favorite place of amusement will
be re-opened to-night by the Martinetti troupe, who
have been engaged by Manager Foster for a limited
number of nights. The regular fall season will com
mence on the lith of September, when the excellent
new stock will make their first appearance.
AUGUST 25
During the brief time the theatre has been closed,
the entire building has undergone a thorough refit
ting and refurnishing, and it now will vie in beauty
of decoration with any similar establishment in the
country. Two magnificent drop curtains, to take the
place of the old ones, have been painted by Mr. Per
kins, a celebrated scenic artist from New York. The
'same gentleman has also repainted the dome, which
now presents an exceedingly handsome and pleasing
appearance. The exterior of the different circles has
been beautifully decorated with golden ornaments
from designs by Mr. 0. Foster, who has displayed a
mostexcellent taste. In addition to these improve
ments, the outside has also been subject to some al.
terations, which add materially to the appearance
of the building, A neat iron balcony has been con
structed along the front, on which, we understand, a
band will occasionally be placed and "discourse
sweet music."
The new company with which the season proper
will be opened, is, we are informed, one of the very
best ever engaged for our theatre. We can well be
lieve this, as Mr. Foster has, at all times, been un
remitting in his exertions to please his patrons. The
heavy expense just suffered in redecorating his
theatre in so brilliant a manner, is another evidence
of his willingness to gratify playgoers, and we hope
may not go unrewarded.
A number of excellent " stars," both male and fe
male, have also been engaged, and will appear du
ring the courae of the season.
Messra. Editors: There wan another great Repub
lican meeting here last night, about 2110 porsone of
all parties being present. the majority of them, how
ever, weto Democrats. The meeting was addressed
by three or four of the "big guns" of the Republi
can party, who labored hard to prove that they were
Democrats, but it was no go. They gave old Buck
guns [not ;lessee] for being a bachelor, told several
anecdotes taken from newspapers and comic alma
nacs, sang some songs, flattered the working men,
told them that Frerntint stole an old rascal's daugh

which the meeting adjourned. Political thermometer

TRIRTY.FOURTR CONGRESS
EXTRA SESSION.
WASHINGTON, Aug. 23---Senate.—Mr. Jonas, of
Tennessee, rose to make a personal explanation. lie
read an extract from the Philadelphia " Ledger,"
containing a sketch of the speech of Mr. Trumbull
in which Mr. T. was represented as saying that Mr.
Jones was a man who had never told a political
truth in his life. Efe took this opportunity to have
the correction made publicly, as he had bean in
formed by Mr. Trumbull that the latter had been
misrepresented.
Mr. Trumbull stated that he had used no such
language in reference to Mr. Jones.
The Senate then resumed the consideration of the
Army appropriation bill.
Mr. Clayton said he was bound by no party ties
and had no other object in remaining in public life
but the good of the country. He deeply deplored
that the House had resolved to adhere to their
amendment, as thereby the Senate was driven to the
necessity either to recede or adhere. At the proper
Hui. he would introduce a resolution fur the ap
pointment of a committee of seven members on the
part of the Senate and eleven on the part of the
House, to take into consideration the disagreeing
votes of the two !louses on the Army hill, with a
view to arrange the details, and settling the differ
ences between them, and to report to their respective
branches. The Senate had agreed to adhere to their
amendment, striking out the Kansas restriction, but
notwithstanding, he believed Lis proposition could
be made acceptable. It would comprembse the honor
of neither house and might save the Army from a
disastrous fate and preserve peace in the territories
where there is now civil war and perhaps preserve
the Union.
Mr. Hunter said no such resolution was now in
Order; by the Senate's adhering, this bill would be
lost, but that which failed on Monday and As now
on the table of the Ilouse might be taken up. To
adhere would only be to express an opinion relative
to the bill. Ho understood furthermore that it was
probable that a new cue would be introduced or,
Monday, in the House. by the Committee on ways
and means.
Mr. Toucey spoke in strong tortes of condemnation
against the action of the llou,e in sending to the
Senate the army bill, under the circumstances ; do
Glaring that they will stop the wheels of government
unless the Senate will yield their opinion and concur
in the legislation of the House. Ile regarded this
conduct as not simply unconstitutional, but in the
highest degree revolutionary. If the House could
enforce obnoxious legislation and coerce the Senate
on one subject, they might on another: they might
refuse appropriations for the judiciary or executive,
unless the action of these departments of government
Ls satisfactory.
Mr. Benjamin said the Muse have nothing to net
upon, and expressed the hope that, by general ono.
rent the vote would la, taken first and that the dis
oussiou go on afterwards.
Mr. Trumbull thought the Nouse were obliged to
act as they did sima, Mr. Hunter had moved that the
treate insist, but did not ask for a committee or oon-
f nee. This was regarded by the !louse an an not
discourtesy, for it was usual for the imisting Ludy
to tick for a eonferezioe.
Mr. Hunter replied that he did nut intend d
tesy to the !louse, nor did be suppose they so regard
ed it. The same course was adopted on the Heil
bill, and the House receded. He thought that a
ibe beet nay to settle the ditTiculty end a dopt
ed that course.
