Democratic Neeting.—The meeting of the friends
of Buchanan, Breckenridge and the Constitution,
held, fast evening, at the residence of Mr. Jacob

Fourth Ward, Allegheny city, was large and enthu

The meeting was organized by electing Abraham
Mays, Meq., President, and Col. G. P. Gerst and Geo.
Able . ltt, Vice Presidents. Fred. Ley and Morrison
Foster were chosen Secretaries.
Him. A. Drum, formerly of Indiana county, who
has recently removed to this city, was then intro

sound and argumentative style. His speech was
well received,' and we hope to hear from him, fret,
quantly, in the same way, during the coming cam-

E. P. Jones, Esq., followed Mr. Drum, and dealt
"hard knocks," thick and fast, among the Know
Nothings and Black Republicans. He is. a forcible
and pleasing speaker, and the frequent cheers and
applause with which his remarks were received, was
„good evidence his auditors were pleased.
Zr.d John Heideman next addressed the meeting
the German language ; and although we could not
tinderstend all the gentleman said, we were con
vinced by the manifestations of those who were
,nnitnlorturia te, that ho was doing the Democracy

Pickpovkcts Arreated.—Between two and three P.

4 "#4:oitileyirania Railroad Station, on Liberty street,
some adroit thief picked her pocket of a port mon

Fox-of her loss, and the latter was about making
,doh for the thief, when a man came up and in.

•other, aide of the platform had committed the theft.
The officer and two or three others pursued the al
leged thieves, sod after a sharp chase, Fox came up
'with one of them on Sixth street, and took him into
•custody. The other ran into a house and was cap
lured, up stairs, Ly officer Maxwell, who had been
watching the fellow during the day.
They were taken to 'Alderman MeMasters' office,
where they gave their names as Wm. Jones and John
Musgrave, and are evidently of English birth.
Nothing was found on their persons to criminate
them, but the policeman alleges that he saw l!dus•

complice, which may have been the taisatug purse.
They were committed to jriL

to-day by the Pennsylvania Infantry in Hoop's
Grove, near East Liberty, judging from the character
of the gentlemen composing the committee, and
from other circumstances that have come to our
tknowledge, we should say would be a splendid enter

at 9:30 and 11 o'clock, A. M., for the grounds. A
large platform fur dancing has been laid, and ample
Arrangements for supplying the wants of the hungry
and thirsty have also been made, while the Washing

Rowley, an experienced othcer, will add much to the
interest of the occasion by a fine dress parade, Let
all who wish to pass the day pleasantly attend.

Fire in Weitmoreland.—Last week the Woollen
Factory owned by Jacob Baredy, and occupied by R.
S. Irwin, at Jones' Mills, in Donegal township,
Westmoreland county, was destroyed by 6ro. Too
full sets of carding machines, and fulling and dyeing
apparatus, and the household furniture and clothing
of Mr. Irwin and family were destroyed. The tire
had reached the bed-rooms, and the smoke nearly
suffocated them before it was discovered. They
barely escaped with their lives, by smashing the
windows, and jumping out in their night clothes•
Mr. Irwin lost his books and about one hundred d

Mad Doge.—A man was bitten on Wednesday in a
grocery on Smithfield street, Ly a canine supposed
to be rabid. On the same afternoon a little girl of
John McKenna, in the Fifth Word, and a youth
named John Nolan, were seriously hurt by a ferocious

Lynch Lalr.—lt is reported a darkey in Washing

niggers." We trow not.
Mr. W. P Cucper, Professor of Penmariehip in
the Iron City College, will lecture before the students
of the Institution this morning at 9 c,'elock. The

Duff Merecrntile College, Pittsburgh.—We direct
attention to the following extract of a letter from C.
Murray, merchant, 11 Front street, New York, to
Messrs. Harper A. Brother!:
"I do not pretend to be capable of fully appreciat
ing the merits of n hook on this science. But I have
known the author, Mr. Duff, from his youth—through
all the grades of business, from a junior clerk up to
a seat at the board of directors in the Bank. and to
the ownership of several large vessels in the Engh
aul American trade. In all these vocations he bits
distinguished himself as a man of great ability, and
energy in business. And it may readily be inferred
that a person of snob multiplied experience in bu-i
-nese must know how to mark out the way for others
—to tell them what to learn, and how to learn it.
i And I have DO doubt be has supplied what will prove
an invaluable text book for the commercial student,
I and which will remain equally yaluable as an assist
ing manual to him when he becomes proficient."
Lecture.—Mr. W. P. Cooper, Professor of Pen
manship, in the Iron City College, will Lecture be—
fore the Students of the College, on this, Friday,.
morning, at 9 o'clock. Subject—Commeroial Tdu-.
cation. This gentleman is well known to this-com—
munity as one of the first artists of the country. Ile•.
is an excellent speaker, and his lectures net only in
terest, but are very instructive, and are of great
benefit to a Commercial School.
