morning one-of the sentries ovirbeard the conspire

;to;-..itlg holes from one cell to another, until four or
Seili''had 'congregated together, then, while the rest
were 0011001Liell under a bed, one of the party was to
feign sickness and call on the turnkey. Immediately
-on his appearance, the men under the bed were to
'take hM:tniiewares, and knock his feet from under
-him. liekt, they were to gag him, take the keys,
lock him .in the cell, and open every door on that

might wish to act in concert with them. This done,
they were to break Into the prison-yard,atorm the

wall.
Acciirdingly, about 5 o'clock on Saturday after

up, operations were commenced, but bad not pro.

was taken rather aback, and begged that if he would
be forgiven he would not make a similar attempt
again. AU those engaged in the conspiracy were
immediately removed to the dungeon, where they
will he permitted to repent on bread and water.

fail. One whispered with a sweet German accent
that he knew of a spring house, on Troy Hill, where
they would have a jolly feast of pies and cream ;
another had "marked out" a plan for getting a
change of dress, by visiting a tailor of his acquaint
ance and promising doable price in one month for
Lis goods; and a third exultingly remarked that Ma
jor Beckham was a kind man to furnish such a good
dinner the last day of their visit (Oh Saturday they
were furnished with an extra ration in the way of
tomato soup.) But the greatest "confidence man"
was he in whosecell the little performance of knock
ing down and despoiling the turnkey, was to have
been performed. He left the following triumphant
record en his slate: "This shows what kind of
watchmen you have here, and how watchful they
are. This hole was made after the slide went up—"

The accounts from Spain are coodicting, but the
indications are that the Royalists have triumphed,
and Saragossa will soon be reduced. Senor Alaza
go, Spanish Ambassador to Paris, resigned immedi
ately on hearipg of the coup d'etat, but the Queen
refuses to accept of his resignatin. Advices to the
29th say that all the provinces are tranquil, except
Saragossa. and that city is closely invested by the
Royalist troops. A despatch from St. Sebastian, of
July 31, announces that Catalonia has acknowledged
the Queen's government_ The Navarre and Basque
provinces are tranquil.
BELGIUM.
The King of Belgium contradicts the report of
the contemplated abdication.
SWEDEN.
Advices from Stockholm mention that great ex
citement prevailed among diplomats in consequence
of reclamation made by Norway against Russian en
croachments on Norwegian territory, and planning
fortifications along the Baltic coasts.
ITALY.
The Austrians are making preparations for crossing
the Po at four different points.
ARABIA.
The insurrection in Arabia has been subdued, and
the chief of insurgents captured and sent to Con
stantinople.
The trade of Baltic ports has become very anima
ed in consequence of the tariff on Sugar baring
ieee reduced by Russia.
Sr. Louts, August 12.--A letter to the Republican,
dated Whiteshade, Kansas, 4th, says the U. S. Dis
trict Court, Judge Lecompte, began the summer term
that day. The docket was large and the counsel
numerous. The rases were chiefly of a criminal and
political character. It is reported that 500 of Lane's
troops are ready to protect those convicted by the
Court. On the strength of this rumor, Gen. Smith
sent 50 dragoons under Cap t. Wood to protect the
Court and enforce its processes. InJudgeLecompte's
charge to the Grand Jury, be reviewed most glaring
offences, and suggested remedies against present anti
prospective evils. He admonished them to be cool,
calm, and unbiassed in their action, and to do noth
ing which could have a seeming sectional or person
al inclination.
Wolf and Boyd. two men sent out by Gen. Rich
ardson to reconnoitre, ral3prted that Lane's regiment
had returned to just across the Nebraska line. They
came upon an encampment of 250 men, from whom
they learned that Lane had returned to raise 50Q0
men and more money, a,..1 th.t.

then went to Nebraska City, where they saw 200
inure of the came regiment, and heard a conversation
confirining this statement.
The writer says that Kansas never enjoyed such
peace as at present, and if let alone by foreign agi
