W Pr'Par d rtlyS %lin 4. t a h t t THE communication of "a Williamsport mother" bee been received, taking exception to the following sentence in the correspondence of " Pitt," in our is sue of the 24th inst • "Fathers and mothers residing in Williamsport are mostly blessed with families of sound suns and beautiful daughters, and such is the proverbial liberatity of the place. that respectable, decent and deserving young gentlemen seldom have to ask twice for a wife, and in several instances have been paid for taking a damsel MT the old folks' hands," and also expressing the hope that " some Williamsport father may aid{ for the proof of the last clause of the sentence." Now the plain meaning of this exceptionable paragraph is, that a deserving man may be blessed with a beautiful and excellent wife it' he will visit the town aforesaid and pay his respects to wee lady. ask f or idii•e, and her Mcitheland Po and that iii, tances have been known where the -sin, has been resorted nut only with the love he dought, but the generous parents hate, with their daughters, itlsoflestiiwed a respeel able portion of the needful. The reverse would suppose that a young gentleman. however worthy, anti however beloved, must be ca tering for aye at the hoops of a damsel, who, to save herself the vulgarity of a frank and prompt aecept once, must jilt and flirt the loie Fick until he ceased to grieve fur friendships unreturned, or, more foolish, seek a solitude forlorn : or it would suppose the more ridiculous ease i . even for oil cairn toting '•parie-arv,"l of a young aids playing toady to the whims of passionless owners of girls, and lie• seeelting, not once, but ever, the Won which per haps no former grunt from their progenitors had en abled them to bestow. JUNI' 2" But we hope our esteemed " mother" will lie eon tent when we say that later information has satisfied us that our correspondent was in error when ho sup• posed that any reward was given to young husbands who took otT the damsel' of this delightful town in question, for the facts are that some have been known to get wives there, and make their estocos osiiii hOOO, and we hope "some Williamsport Father •' may show the "proof" to the contrary. Our correstoindent says he went on business, u/Sonile, and when lie asks to e fur a " nifie," it will be alien dads, dames, and damsels are less plenty than now. _ --- - The Fair for the benefit of the colored Masona was held last night in Masonic Hall, and was largely attended by persons of both complexions. Refresh ments were bountifully provided, a fine band of music was in attendance, lotteries were drawn, and the usual entertainments of fairs were offered to the guests. The procession was made up of quite a number of men in full masonic regalia, also were followed by a concourse of ladies, appropriately at tired. The best order and the utmost propriety were of this kind arc highly s o mendable, and every genuine loser of liberty most fcel an increased pride in his State. which not only tolerates. but legalises them. An opportunity is such occasions gis en to the unfortunate `One of Africa to fraternise and Fie"w hew much they have improved from higher examples.
