Przeident. WILMAJtTH. Vice Presieknes.' T. S. CLARKE, GEO. W. CABS. JOHN S. COSGRATE, HENRY LAMBERT, The dullest periods of the year are those immedi ately preceding the January and July settlements; the latter is even more dull than the former, and the listlessness which prevails at present in our markets, may not only be attributed to this cause, bat to the excessive heat of the weather and the lowness of the rivers. Besides the farmer is at home now prepar ing fur his harvest, and only visits our city at the cull of stern necessity. The latter cause materially affects our local trade, while a suspension of our in tercourse with our distant customers is always looked for, when our river navigation is restricted by the lowness of the water. Considering the Hassan, how ever, an unusual amounpof business has been done, and in one or two departments the market has been quite active. Since our last review there has been several copious warm showers which cannot but im prove the prospect of the coming harvest. The Corn, e,Tecially, will be benefitted and we may yet hope for a fair yield if the season continues to be propitious. The other crops look well, and although there is no ; otoiso of a superabundant yield, them will still be n fa:r average. o have fit, change to nets in the Money Market, which is easy: indeed the restricted business has le..sened the wants of the mercantile community, and thor , • is not so much paper offered as heretofore; nevertheless our banks find the offerings sufficient for the amount they are enabled to do. There is not much offered outside and the rates are without change. The fullowing i. ti..e statement of averages of the N.2a , Y.rk City Banks 1,7 the past week, which fully accounts fur the ease in the money market, and the tendency to speculation in stocks. The comparison with last week is as follows : Loans. Specie. Circulation. Deposits. June 14. ....1104,186,681 17,440,690 8,760,735 91,602,245 Jiro. 2J 105,626,955 17,871,955 8,278,002 93,705,837 In, rrny .. $1,458,114 457,21'5 2,113,592 $482,733 The expansion of loans continues, and the in crease for the week is about a million and a half. The increase for two weeks, however, is less than half a million more than the increase of specie, and not so much as the increase of deposits. On Tues day the money market continued easy. There is more activity in demand loans among the IlTokars, consequent on the improved movement at the'gtock Exchange; but the offerings of mercantile paper outside of Rank are limited, and they are bat mod ..rate is. the regular way of discount at 7 per cent. The Importers are making considerable settlements th.s season with their Bankers, and these, being I to th , demand (or remittances on account of ~ e dividends, have kept the rates for Foreign • I'7.- ...nd have added to the Gold shipment aely t, tend-. about $1,500,000. baidness was done Oil the Stock .uesday. A further advance of ® had in State :=.toeks and some of the ionds. In Road shares there was a con .c amount of realising, as usual on a sudden decided rise, after several weeks of dullness. Mannfactur have reneou to suppose that large private sales .Toro made by Ball to Bear, at the extreme rates of Monday, and this had the silent effect to diminish the buoyancy of the market. At Philadelphia the Stock marketcontinued buoy ant and an active business was done at the Board in ins estme.nt securities which are attracting more at louden prices =how a further improvement, with lareer tran=notions than has occurred for some time I M .11 In reference to the advance in sugars, a late number . ..f tho New York Herold says! There has been for some time a movement going ..n 11.1 sugars, both in London and in other prominent markets of the world. Like cotton, it is supposed thatconsumption has overtaken - the productive avail of labor devoted to its culture. With the ex ,i•iitii,n of tuba, scaroely any other sugar growing mmmry has augmented its supplies, while some pla• including Louisiana, in this country, the reports hat. , exhibited decided indications of diminished Tist II .1. r spa. •• It is reported on the most reliable authority, that the Messrs. Bothschilds, of London and Paris, have entered the sugar market. The same rumor a 1. ., prevailed recently in Havana. It is known this b.•u•e have agents distributed over all the world .:Lere there is commerce of importance. Those u:e tuaud in sugar-growing countries, as wall as in ~tike.r. places. It is through these persona the house, it is said, has been enabled to obtain such reliable information as to the supply of the wotid ; and then by ascertaining the amount rc l uired fur consumption generally, more or is,a correct data could be obtained on which to base a purge speculative movement. By purchasing sup pht, alien everything could be had cheapest, weath er in Havana. Brazil, East Indies or elsewhere, they would be enabled on an advance in prices, to realise large profits. To secure an operation in this movo mem, it is likely they have had something to do with articles which have recently appeared in London papers, and the Paris eunstirittiontial, favoring the idea. which in itself may be more or less true, that the sugar crop of the world during the past year has been insufficient to meet the consumption of the world. Since the first of May, and especially since the unfavorable prospect of another crop in I...Msinua have become known, prices have steadily improved in the market ; and sugars have been high, 1... th In Paris and London, during a good part of the winter and spring; and should they continue to be sustained, the house reported to have engaged in purchasing largely cannot do otherwise than make money. Their large capital and credit may enable team to control, to a greater or less extent, such ar. ogles as sugar and coffee, hut the valuable product of :orlon would ho above the reach or the grasp of a Iciest houses of similar strength." the Newark, Ohio, Sorth American thus speaks of toe wool trade, which has now fairly commenced for the season :-- =MEM rec,•lN H \ki ,rf Al I=l •• Loads of wool are daily coming into this city tr. , ili the honest, healthy country. We found during ~or ab , ence last week, that there was some consider able excitement among the wool growers and buyers. The former seem disposed to hold off and obtain for their wuel a more than (hitherto) usual price, while the latter were wishing to buy at old prices, but de termined to have it at present ones. Some w,.01 sold in Hartford, while we were there, for 53 cent.., which was the highest that bad yet been paid. tine farmer was holding his at 55. He shears this year nearly 600 sheep, and has some very fine wool. We believe prices bore ire ranging from 25 to 60 cents per pound." The Masailon (Ohio) Gwen e reports the wool trade active in that place, and the supplies of the common grades coming in freely.
