THIRTY-FOVRTIFIL CONGRESS
FIRST SESSION.
WASHINGTON, June lb—Senate—Mr. Bright being
absent, Mr Stuart was elected President pro tem.
On motion of Mr. Adams, the bill to atnenil the
Naturalisation Laws was made the special order of
the day for Saturday next.
Mr. Trumbull introduced his bill to restore order
and peace to Kansas, by proposing to bring it under
the Territorial Oeverument of Nebraska.
Mr. Trumbull explained that the only object of the
bill was to extend the Territorial government of No.
braska over Kanetts, and to abolish the present gov
ernment of the latter territory, and the laws made
by their Legislature. Ile thought that this proposi
tion was worthy of some consideration, as there is a
state of affairs now existing in Kansas which all
good men must deplore. Ile did not care idiom
having the bill referred, es that would withdrew it
from the consideration of the Senate.
Mr. Douglas hoped that the bill would be referred
to the Committee on Territories who would report on
it at an early day. It ins oiiti none gra, e oes twos,
but he was glad to see that the opponents of the Ne
braska bill were beginning to acknowledge the prin•
elide that in a measure the laws of Nebraska wore
'nude by the people of Nebraska, and the laws of
Kansas by the people of Kansas. But the proposi
tion was to abolish the lows made by the people of
Kansas for their own got ernment. and place theta
under the laws of Nebraska. which they had no
voice in making.
Mr. Trumbull said that so for front arknowledging
the principle of the Nebraska bill, he did not belie, LI
there wa• any principle at all in it. It was under
stood one way at the North and another at the South.
but he would that this bill was such a prop o sition
lie should prefer. Ile regarded the repeal of the
Missouri compromise as the rause of all the tuis.hiet,
and would be glad to restore things to their flora.,
position ; but this was a temporary expedient not in
tended to carry out tus own wishes. full).
Mr. Douglas said that he was t" , .110.1. 1 116 tit
