State of the Crops—The Growing Wheat
Crop•
We have advices from all parts of the Western
tales, says the Cincinnati Price, Carroit, inclu

.‘n which we learn that, with the exception of
,rnnossee, where it has been frozen out, the
rowing wheat looks rxceedit gly promising and
ealthy.

-The tit. Joseph (;a:eth• of the :13,1

'wintry that the growing crop of wheat is one
,r tho mo=t promising that has ever been seen in
chi. , country. AR there was a greater number of

welt necessary will be plentiful. -
I'KNNSS LVANIA.,--The Doylestown 11501orral of
th e instant says In all parts of the
country the wheat looks splendid. With but
few execptimo , , we find it thick on the: ground,
ta:l and of good color. The high prices for the
p a -t year induced our agricultural friends to
sew large u nantities of it, and that too with
great care and good
AHYLA I, —We are pleased to learn, says the
Baltimore Patriot, that although the spring crops
ate at least three or four weeks behind the 'usual
time, yet there is every prospect of an abundant
yield. The grain crops , rum well, and shonld
the weather be favorable fur the next six weeks
the. Larvest will be an abundant one.

that the Ilu,sian's loss has not been less

never will be ascertained.
In this war, not more than one death in ten
in battle, and less than one in five
been in any way connected with what are
1. ruled the casualties of war. Disease has been
f.‘r more fatal than the sword, and thus it always
has been, especially when large bodies of men are
encamped fur a long time upon the same ground.
The filth of the camp accumulates, festers and
e,•rrupts, and finally so taints the atmosphere as
to engender fevers and the long train of ills which
peculiar to such circumstances. To make
t he Crimean war the more fatal, the worst climate
and worst preparation for its severities was ad
d.,l to the disadvantages we have enumerated.

PITTSBURGH, May 29
There is a gradual decline in business as the warm
season approaches. Our rivers, although affording
water sufficient for the smaller steamers, are still re
ceding, but as the June freshets generally come to
our relief, we may yet hope that there will be no
suspension -reamer navigation for some time.
Our city has been quite enlivened by the arrival of
many strangers, delegates and others, on their way
to the Democratio National Convention, to be held
at Cincinnati on Monday next. This has given quite
an impetus to the passenger business on the Western
Railroads, as every car that has gone out for some
days has been loaded with Democratic passengers.
Another meeting of the City Councils was held for
the purpose of devising some way for permitting the
Allegheny Valley Railroad to enter into the city.
The Councils, however, again chose to differ on this
vexatious question, and the Valley Road will be kept
in suspense for a time longer. It is to be hoped that,
for their own credit, the City Councils will soon come
to some determination on this subject.
There is somewhat more stringency in our money
market than formerly. Our Banks, although dis
counting freely unexceptionable paper, are not able
to accommodate wants of the community at large,
sod a good deal of paper has been offered outside.
The official average of the Banks of the City of
New York, for the week ending Saturday last. May
24th, present in the aggregate a large and somewhat
unexpected gain in the Specie reserve, with a further
decline in the Loans and Discounts. The statement
altogether is a highly favorable sign of the healthy
movement of Money affairs, and its very conservative
features took the street this afternoon by surprise. The
change in the line of discounted paper, wrought by
no effort of the Bank managers to further reduce it,
is, if possible, more important in its bearing upon the
market than the accession of Specie. The exact
variations from the previous statement of Saturday,

At Cincinnati the money market for the week en d
ing Tuesday, bad been very active. Money was in
pretty constant demand, but the supply being inad
equate, and most of our banks finding it necessary
to contract their discount lines, considerable incork
renience was experienced, and some stagnation of
business. Within the last few days, however, the de-
mood has fallen off somewhat, and as our Banks aro
now better supplied with currency, and photo every
