The Irtiliertiored Pray Sti iscirwr continues to attract
the attention of the "one-horse men " about town.
Yesterday His Honor, Mayor Bingham, had before
him a man named John M'Corroll, who was arrested
for running the streets without a license, in opposi
tion to an ordinance. liPearroll, it appears, has n
license from the Allegheny city authorities, for which
he pays $2 per annum, but objects to paying $2,&0
for one in Pittsburgh, although his business relit, hitu
as much to this as to the other side of the river.
His Honor decided that he must fork over the quarter
eagle, when his counsel took out a writ of certiorari
to have the case finally adjudicated before the Su
preme Court.
A milk-man, of the name of Michael Tobias, dri
ving a fine span, (milk-men'always have good horses)
also objected to paying into the city Treasury his
quota, on the plea, forsooth, that he was cowing to
market. This milk and water argument will scarcely
avail in a court of law and equity, although for the
sake of his customers, it may be policy not to exact
the flue.

Lawrence at $1.5,000 to $20,000. They boll their
lands at Topeka and Lawrence by legal title, and
cannot be dispossessed. The handsomest stores in
Lawrence are owned by Missourians. Emigration
from New England is limited this spring, hot is very
great from the Western States.
It is proposed to form aid societies to relieve the
wants of the people of Lawrence; also, societies

CHICAGO, May 28.—The morning mail from St.
Louis brings but little news. The Westport Times of
the 23d, says that the Investigating Committee was
Still at Leavenworth. The letters are chiefly con
firmatory of previous accounts. Judge Schuyler
writes under date of the 20th that himself and Con
way are set at liberty; O. W. Brown is still a
prisoner of the mob at Lecotupton; Goy. Robinson is
in a similar situation at Westport; Shannon refuses
any interference with the posse; Schuyler called
upon (Hirer to use his influence with Shannon.
Sherman also made the request and Oliver promised
to answer in fifteen minutes, but neglected until it
was too late. Be said then that Shannon was au
effete and nothing was possible. The mob fired upon
an Indian a few miles from Lawrence who is since
dead. The Delaware tribe have determined on ven
geance.
Reports are received of fresh murders on the route
of the posse from Lecompton to Lawrence. Previous
to the entry of the mob at Lawrence, Shannon agreed
in writing that if the arms were delivered up, Col.
Sumner with only a sufficient number, would ho
allowed to snake arrests. After compliance it WWI de
clared that the arms must be delivered to the posse
and allow the di.truction of the hotel, offices and
breastworks. Much indignation was felt at the action
of the Safety Committee.
