On motion of Mr. Jones, Redo/eat, That Councils proceed to other business in absence of the special business, for which the Councils had been convened. Adopted. Mr. Clarke presented report of Finance Committee, with the following resolution: Resolved, That the Police Committee bo and they .are hereby authorized to fit up a room in Wilkins Hall to he used as a permanent office for the City Treasurer, the improvements to include a vault which shall be constructed so as to be used both by the Mayor and Treasurer. Report accepted and resolution read three times and passed. Mr. Wade presented a petition from L. Wilmarth, asking for a water pipe to be laid en Miller street. Referred to Water Committee. Mr. Wade also offered the following resolution: Resolved, That the Committee on Streets and Pa ving be Instructed to inquire into the expediency of placing a culvert in Walnut street, Fifth Ward, from Liberty street to the Allegheny river; and in such other streets, crossing Penn street above Walnut. as require it, in order to render that great thoroughfare, Penn street, passable at all seasons of the year, and to report thereon in Councils. Referred to Committee on Streets. Mr. Smyth, from Committee on Streets, who had under consideration the communication of Judge Wilkins, relative to a bill at present before the Legis lature, making the city liable for damages in altering grades, presented the following resolution Reeoleed. That the Senators and the members of the House of Representatives at Harrisburg be and they are hereby requested to oppose, as detrimental to the interests of the city of Pittsburgh. the passage of 13111 No. 10 of the Senate file, entitled an "Act defining the liability of the city of Pittsburgh fur damages arising from the alteration of the grades of streets and alleys in said city," and that the Clerks if Councils are hereby instructed to, forward to the Senators and members aforesaid a certified ropy of this resolution.
