LOCAL AFFAIRS.
MONDAY
The Caws of X' Com—Stabunent of the Pritoner.—
•On Saturday afternoon an examination of the case of
William J)ughey, charged with stabbing Thomas
M'Ooy, was had before Alderman Major. The
prisoner, after being duly cautioned by the Alderman
not to say anything that would criminate himself, vol
untarily gave the following statement of the difficulty :
STATEMENT OP WILLIAM oseonnv.
My name is William Caughey ; reside in the Fifth
Ward ; when at work, am employed in the iron
works; have not been at work for three weeks; was
down the river for that time • got home on Monday
or Tuesday last; on Wednesday was at Andrew
Cross' house, in the Fifth Ward; went with him to
the Good Intent Home, where we took a drink of
liquor together; he told me that his wife had sued
him, and requested me to go with him to hunt her,
for the purpose of having the matter settled; we
went to several places, but could not find her; at
last we went up on the bill to some of her friends,
but our search was fruitless ; coming down Wash=
inept) street, when we were opposite Mrs. Bruce's;
he.said "come in here—she might be here;' we
' went in; we sat down, when a man jumped out,
either from the bed, out of the corner, or under the
bed; this man was Thomas M'Coy; he came up and
struck me, and knocked me speechless; when I
came to myself I discovered that he had his
coat off, and they had hold of him; John M'Lain,
a girl by the name of Weaver, Andrew Cross, two
women, and a girl named Dook were the persons
holding him ; he broke loose from their grasp, and
went over to the hearth and struck me pretty hard
again ; I was trying to get out ; he caught me by the
coat, pulled me back from the door, and lifted me
upon the bed ; he then caught me by the throat or
neck handkerchief, and choked me until my tongue
hung oat; I put my hand in my pocket fur a little
pan knife I had, and cut him once or twice on the
liuRE, kr . the purpose of getting from him ; couldn't
' gut'loose, and cut him until be let use go ; ran out in
the yard, and was followed bytM'Coy ; looked round,
..,,aaw him, and mid, '• come to a Doctor with me, it is

believe M'Coy was drunk ; don't know whether the
people in the house were drunk or sober; was in the
house ten or twenty minutes when I was struck by
M'Coy ; don't know how long I was in afterwards.
After the taking of this statement, the prisoner was
re-committed to jail until Wednesday next, to await
the result of M'Coy's injuries.
Dr. Floyd, the attendant physician, made a depo
position to the effect that when called in, he found
about fifteen wounds in the abdomen, back, side and
left arm, mostly about an inch in extent, except one
behind the left shoulder, which was nearly two inches
and a half long. Two of the wounds in the abdo
men penetrated into the cavity, at which a portion
of the contents escaped, and which had to be re
placed. There was most to be dreaded from the dan
ger of peritoneal inflammation.
The Doctor also mid he considered M'Coy's present
condition very dangerous, but that he was now im
proving. He will probably recover, but is now to
•
some danger.
