FRIDAY MORNING
Tun 13n,:su QVIRSTto*.=The grain advices
from Europe by the Canada are deemed very im
portant Tna continued rise in wheat, not only ,
in England and France, but in Germany, ex- ,
cites more than usual attention. So far as the
English harvest of 1855 is concerned, a letter
of Mr. John Caird, claiming that the deficiency
is inconsiderable has been taken up by the Lon
don Daily News and other authorities, with the
view of refuting it. The average price at Mark
Lane, the woek the Canada sailed, was 2s the
quarter higher than on the previous Monday.,
The English millers were the principal buyers.:
They number, throughout the kingdom, 37,268 '
and it is held to be a gross absurdity to suppose',
that this large class would not struggle againsVl
the advance in price, if they could prevent
or if their own knowledge of the English oropi
did not influence them to immediate purchaseel
It is equally absurd, the Daily News oontends, to!
maintain that the 303,720 farmers of Urcat
Britain have entered into a combination to keep,
up the pride of ytheat. The requirements of
the kingdom laet _year were twenty-four mil-!
lions bushels,
or three millions imperial guar
tars. For the first two months after the har-:
vest the average per quarters was 26s 10d. TUN
year the average since the harvest is 765. 611
The average since January is 76s sd, and it
likely to mount to 78s before the end of Decem-!
her. The seine autborily says:
"Now it, is plain that the present war wet
certainly not the first nor the main canoe of the
great rise in the price of wheat, for in February
1854, it was 801 10d. In November, 1858, i
stood - at 72s 51. Those high prices were not
caused by the war, which only begun in Marohr
1851: After the war was declared, in Septem
ber, 1851, the price was SGI 7d. Nor can the ,
war have affected the price in Prussic, which ban
lately been buying corn in England, and prof
poses to reduce the import duties in the Zoll
verein that her people may be fed. Even i
1868 the average price of wheat in Prussia w
Ma 9d, being 13s lid above the average of th
previous 25 years; and it has since continual!
risen. Last year, too, the price of wheat w ,
quite as high in the United States as in Eng
land; and it was not affected by the war. I
truth, a general rise has taken place in the pric
of corn throughout Europe, and, we may Bay(
throughout the world, which must not be lighi.l
passed over,-or treated as monetary deviatiori
from the ordinary price to be corrected by some
petty municipal or imperial regulations "
The causes of changes are nett argued out
by the writer, as relating mainly' to the effect
of the commercial activity of the world, which
has been stimulated by the discoveries in Call
fora& and Australia.. The diversions of labo
from agriculture in 18453-64, in the United States-,
is adverted to as one of the results of SAS
stimulation. The increase of city population in
this country is also mentioned, in connection
with the creation of more wealth from ship and
railway building, wherewith to buy and pay fol.
food at enhanced prices. In abort, the been
question is treated as a world-wide problem, and
the ultimate conclusion arrived at that the dear.
ness which the English people deplore .m
mences" chiefly in the gold discoveries, which
have spread an almost mad delight through all
society, and have everywhere kindled energy and
enterprise." Remarking on these statements,
the New York ?Imes says:
"It is highly probable that the English Gov
ernment, as well as the Imperial rule in France,
discovered the true bearing of the harvest re
sults at home earlier in the season than the fore
going speculations. They have, undoubtedly,
had their commissaries or agents in the United
States for these six weeks past. The money
negotiations for the purchase of grain ire made
through Baring Brothers.
These movements have antioipated by more
than a month the rapid advance in priest and
the renewed discussion of the food question in
England, as advised by the Canada. The prices
have not been quoted so decidedly buoyant, as
well as dear, since 1847.
"One of the fortunate results of this state of
the question to American agriculture is the
steady increase in favor of the staple of Indian
corn, as a substitute for wheat. The export
trade in corn has increased rapidly, and prices
in Liverpool have steadij increased under it.
When Sir Robert Peel's b.II first opened the
English ports to free trade in corn to 1845. 80a,
or 32s for the Indian cora of the United States
in Liverpool was considered a highly remuner
ating quotatiol. The latest figures Ilia retti,di

CENTRAL AMERICA. —By the Steamer, whose
edvices we present to-day, we have Inteltigence
full of interest. General Walker's governmt at
of Nicaragua goes on swimmingly. lie is con
etantly receiving reinforcements and among them
fifty of Kinney's men have deserted fro n Sul
Juan or tdreytown. and joined him. This is na
tural enough, Kinney's regime did not ofrir
them as good prospects as that of Walker's.
Hard work at building huts, printing newspaper!,
and onitivating crops was not what they bargain
ed for. Something of glory and conquest, and
consequence, and plunder, such as the successes
of Walker held out the promise of, was neces
sary for the excitable nature of the fillibusiers.
Accordingly, they have gone to Granada, where
good fat offices and large pay await to be plucked
by them. Two hundred more recruits are also
said to have left San Francisco to join Walker.
This is just what might have been looked for.
D.ubtless, there will be several thousand Amer
icans in Nicaragua in a few months, and the num
ber will continue to swell if Walker remains mas
ter of the country. At the last dates every thing
was tranquil, and the operations of the Transit
Company were carried on without molestatioe
But the most important item is, that the United
States Envoy, CoL Wheeler, has officially recog
nized the new government, One putting the ad
ministration of the fillibuster Chief on a footing
of After snob recognition it is unlike
ly that the United States naval forces will under
take to disposers Walker and Kinney, as has been
stated they would. We are committed in favor
of the new dynasty by the official act of oar
. minister.
Walker has therefore, only to fear the interfer
ence of Great Britain. Should that take an active
shape, be will hardly have force enough to ritaik.t
it, and his policy will be to retreat, before the
invaders, This, however. is not likely to take
place, and the Fillibusters may be regarded as
installed permanently in Central America, by the
successes of Colonel Walker, and likely to remain
there, unless some immediate coalition of the
defeated party in Nicaragua be made with the
rolling powers in Guatemala, Honduras, Salvo,
dere, and Costa Rica, In otder to effect a gracd
demonstration against the Americans. Where
there are unity of feeling or action in those Cen
tral American States, suoh a result would be
highly probable, but they have so long been torn
by civil dissensions atd wars against each other,
that only the fear of great danger to themselves
will be likely to unite them.—Phil. N. Amer.
Oorreerrondenee of the Battu:more Snn.
Wantmottos, Nov. 25, 1855.—The danger of
a collision between the Federal Government and
the Free State Government of Kansas is immi
nent. The Free State Convention have adopted
a constitution, which is to be approved by the
Anti-Slavery voters on the 16th of December,
and put in operation in January. The laws of
the new State will, of course, come in ootllct
with those of the Territorial Government, and
Governor Shannon hart stated that he is anther•
ised by the President to call upon the militia,
and also on United States troops, for maintsti.
auoe of the laws of the Territorial Government.
We were never before quite so near a civil war
as we are under this state of things. The militia
to t „ailed out will, of course, he thellisseuri
men—the very men who have undertaken the
task of making Kansas a elsveholding State.
Though Congress 41 to meet to-m)rrow week,
we see few members here as pct. A canons of
Know Nothing members was tatted to meet here
on Wednesday, probably in reference to the or
ganization of the House; a fusion upon the latent
plan, that of Cincinnati, will no doubt be at
tempted.
A prolonged contest for the Speakership may
be expected, and if Mr. Howell Cobb should be
the Democratic candidate he may be chosen, as
he was in 1849, after more than sixty ballotlngs,
and at last, as then, under a special vote, fcr
effecting a choice by plurality. los.
PAUL, ISTHMIAN AND BATH. —There is no foun
dation for the statement which has been going
the round of the papers that &rattan, .Paul and
Bates, the bankers, were about to be sent to
Gibraltar to suffer their sentence at the Criminal
Court. Gibraltar is not by any means an easy
station, but may be reckoned perhaps one of the
most penal and bard working, as well as being
by far from the moat healthy. The convicts are
now in Newgate. They will, in the ,first in
stance, suffer the usual period of separitte con
finement, which is, we believe, a year. After
that they will probably be transported too penal
settlement for the remainder of their sentence ;
but no decision will come until after the custo.
mary probation of separate confinement.
