•rrorr or WAGES."—The committee' of arrange
ments, of the Carpet weavers' Convention, now in
session at New York, submitted for adoption the
following resolutions, which, after much conversa
tion, were unanimously adopted :
1. Resolved, That this convention consider the
present attempt to reduce the prices sof carpet
weavers unnecessary and unjust seeing that the
Tariff (the:declared cause of this attempt) does not
come into operation fon' three months. nor can we
believe that its actual operation would justify this
attempt.
2. Resolved, :That knowing from experience that'
our present wages are not more than remunerative,
and only'snirketent to afford us a tolerable subsis
tence, we cannot admit the propriety of a reduction
of our present prices.
.5. Rest:deed, Tliatthe reduction of wages has nev
er been a Permnnent advantage to the employers,
for when they cannot obtain a sufficient price in
the market, the just and proper remedy is to with
hold the supply until the demand cause a return to
remunerative prices.
4. Resolved, That this convention look upon the
present proposal to reduce wages aS ruinous, and
that it is their duty to resist by every legal means
the carrying into effect such a proposal.
After reading an address to the employerers, and
the transaction of some other business of minor im
portance, the convention took a recess till the after
noon. ._The session .of Wednesday afternoon was
chiefly occupied in discussing local grievances and
suggesting 'remedies, precious to the formation of a
' constitution. On Thursday is to be' held the con
ference meeting with the 'employers.
THE FI:IUEH nacatxn.—At about half after
three O'clock yesterday afternoon between ten and
twelve thousand people congregated on the banks
of the Allegheny river, in the anticipation of seeing
Mr .Trouburg, the inventor of the flying machine,
take his flight, as advertised, from the hand Street
Bridge to the Point and back. At four o'clock
reveral inviduals were seen emerging from the door
of the bridge on to; the roof, carrying someting very
like a flying machine with them. The excitement
on the bank was tremendous, the c'owil of anxious
spectators were impatient to behold the:a oi el sight
The individuals who we have mentioned as having
been on the top of the bridge, leisurely proceeded
to the iniddle of the structure, and after making som e
pre'parations,aPparently flying the Machine, advan_
ced to the edge and gallantly plunged over—a large

"The Earthquake yesterday morning , appears to
have been felt in. many towns in t New England,
from which we have heard. A gentleman from
Plymouth, N. 11., says it wai quite severe at that
place, and in all the towns on the Merrimack. A
gentleman writing to us from South Gardiner,
says:
"We had a severe shock like an earthquake, at
about ten Minutes before five o'clock this morning:
the.report lasted for several seconds, and it was
heard in the neighboring
towns around us for sev
eral miles. Those ofour citizens who had not
left their beds were aroused from their slumbers by
the report. One of my neighbors sprung from his
bed to the door. supposing some one was knock

"I have just heard from Athol and South Or

the shock was experienced there at about the
same time.-
The Salem Advertiser, of Wednesday, says:
"Yesterday morning, between daylight and sun

thrown open, and in some instances ware to be
tumbled from the shelves, &c. Just previous to
-the shock a loud rustling noise was heard similar
to that of the stirring of leaves in a high wind; the
sky also presented an uncommon appearance in
the East. Speculation is wide awake in regard to
this phenomenon, and we have even heard some
go so far as to set it down as the precursor of some
thing direful."
The Hartford Courant,,of _Wednesday, says:
shock of the earth, which lasted half a min
