TIIE TERRIBLE Frnr. sr LAPRAIRE. CANADA. —The Tarn nearly Reduced to Ashes.—The Mont real Pilot, of August 6, states that about 3 o'clock on-Tuesday evening, a fire broke out in a black smith shop, near the railway station. The strong southwesterly wind then prevailing soon commu nicated the devouring element to the buildings ad joining, and in a very short time the entire village appeared doomed to destruction. The fire contin• ued till 5 o'clock yesterday morning, when it was computed that over three 'hundred dwellings were consumed, and perhaps 1500 human beings de prived of shelter. With the exception of about ten small houses next the river, there is not one building standing between the steamboat landing and the second cross street from the lower pier.— To the east of this line there is only one house destroyed. The Scotch and English Chapel, Messrs. Sauvagau's distillery, and the stores be longing to _Messrs. Thompson, Dunn, Charleston, and other merchants, were rapidly burned, with their contents. The Catholic Chappel and Nun nery are injured, and abOut forty houses which are adjoining them. Theie was but one small en gine which belonged to the town, and two to the barrack's; but these were unable to do anything. The Montreal fire engines, which were conveyed to' Longuenil by the steamboat Lord Stanley, were unable to reach Laprairie .before 2 o'clock A. M., from the difficulty of procuring horses to send for ward the engines. When they had arrived, a scene of drunkenness was pmented, most disreputable to the officers in command of the military; neither soldiers nor civilians being in a condition even to work the pumps. Casks of spirits lay exposed on the beach, and the temptition was two strong to be resisted. Men soon became unconscious where they were, or what they were about. As the !Jer ald sayr.—qlere you would see a stout man remov ing a couple of fowls, a frying pan, a pot of jelly. or some other equally unimportant article, while a little exertion might have saved half-a street" It is melancholy to see the furniture strewn along the beach, and women with their children destitute of either food of shelter. SA CIITLEG r..—We learn that on Sunday night last, says the Greensburgh Republican, some wretched villans broke into the Catholic Chapel some five miles east of this place, mutilated the alter, broke some of the sacred vessels, and carried off two silver candle-sticks. It is to be deeply re gretted that such sacriligious conduct should be perpetrated in our midst, and it is the duty of every good citizen to see that the guilty should meet with that punishment, the enormity of the offence requires. We hope that every lawful means will be resorted to, to bring the offenders to punish ment A reward - of $lOO has been offered for the arrest and conviction of those concerned in it. Gaines, after which, on account, of the heat of the weather, the defence 'was post poned till Monday. The following portion of the. evidence of Cola Payne, who it will be remember el, was Inspector General of the Army of Occu pation, ni the battle of Resaca de la 'Palma and Palo Alto:-- Question by Geu. G.—What was the relative strength of Gen. Taylor's army and the Mexican forces about the latter part of April, when the latter forces were approaching the bonier of Tex . - as,? , . Anawer.by Col. Fayne.—Gen. Taylor's whole force was about twenty-nine hundred men— seven hundred of whom were .at Fort Brown. The Mexican forces were variously estimated, when we arrived on the Rio,Grade, opposite Matamoros, at kohl three to five thousand men. The day after our arrival, the Mexicans commenced throwing up picket works . at four different points. The suc ceeding day it was reported that Ampudia was ap- proaching .Matamoras with a re-enforcement of six thousand men—that re-enforcement did ar- - rive and was never estimated at less than three thousand men. Remaining in our situation for some time, Ampudia let Gen. T. early hnow, that unless he reseeded beyond the Nueces, he should construe his presence into a Declaration of War. Question by Gen. G.—What was the relative strength of forces at the battle of Palo Alto? Answer by Col Payne—Judging from the length of the. Mexican line,. ontrasted with Our own, their forces could not hare been less than 6 to 7,000 men. The American force colisisted of 2,211 men. Question - by Gen. G.—Had the Mexicans any reinforcement on the 9th May! Answer.— , lt was reported that Ampudia had reinforced Arista but to what extent 1 am unable to say.. Question by Gen. G.—l read to you an ex tract from a communication of the war depart ment, in these - terms— ,, The emergency which would tolerate the making requisitions for troops, &c., must be one of imminent peril, &c.," was Gen. Taylor's army' in such circumstances as would have made in the judgment of the President of the United States, his duty to cull out aid, &cl Answer.—With a full knowledge of facts, I have no doubt that the President would have felt it his duty to call out aid. The army did not for one moment consider itself in danger, never doubting its ability to repel the Mexican threes. Question by Gen. G.—Estimating the Mexican forcei at 7001) men, did you or not discover some anxiety in Gen. Taylor's army to see some rein forcements from Louisiana. Answer—No sir. Not a man that was not anx ious to engage the enemy before reinforcements arrived. That was my impression of the feeling of the army. Vit.r.Aucors.—The New York Tribune states some malicious scoundrel cut both the wires of the Boston Telegraph, and that of the Offing line on Sunday night at 33d' street. He added petty larceny to his crime by carrying away ten feet of the wire. The Bostonions were thus prevented from obtaining the foreign news until Monday r. Nt. Breaking the Telegraphic wires is fellony by the laws of New York, and the company offer a re ward of $lOO for the detection of this offender. A new rope by which the Wires had been drawn down, was left on the ground, and it was evident that the wires had been cut with a stone: The fellow who committed the deed, since he is fond of hammering stone, should be set at it in the State Service. A Dzser.nAno raccen.—A desperate fellow by the name of John Work was killed lately at Van Buren, Arkansas Territory. He threatened to kilt a man named Funkhouset and also determined to take the life of eight other men, but being decoyed by a negro in his employ, was led into an ambus cade where the whole party fired upon him with rifles, every shot taking effect, and he fell dead. Attend to your health!—lmpurity of the blood —Great EurodemrPanarra.—This wonderful med icine for the cure of all chronic affections that have arisen from an impure state of the blood, and obstruction of the glandular system, viz. Scrophulia, white swelling and ulcers of every kind, tumors, mercurial syphilis, obstructed and enlarged glands, swellings of the lower extremi. ities, eruption of the skin, diseased kidneys, and bladder, rheumatism, piles, costiveness, weakness and debility, irritation of the spine, female corn , plaints, obstructions and derangement of the ute.: rine system, &c., has gained for itself a reputa tion in the "Healing Art," both in Europe and the United States, that astonishes the whole medical frculty. The vast amount of inefficient mixtures of Sarsaparilla and other compounds are daily fal ling back upon their compounders. Both the faculties and their patients have tasted fully the faint virtues of the Sarsaparilla root, and discontin uipg its use; those who have not fully tested this. root, arid arespectical, let them procure the Solid Extract and make into pills of 3 grains each, take 4 three times a day, which will be equal to one large bottle of the Syrup now in use; this experi ment will convince those who make it, that the root of the Sarsaparilla so mueh used, is nearly in ert. Then use the GREAT EUROPEAN PANACEA. One bottle will in many cases be found to take hold of disease and in a very short time by con tinueing its use, complete the good work that it so nobly commenced. Persons whose constitutions have been drugged with-mercery and other miner al poisons, the delecterious left to gnaw in their systems. should at once procure Dr. Duncan's Eu ropean panacea.
