2 FLET S INCHES WATER IN THE CHANNEL
STEAM an EMPIIESSTURNED.—About 3 o'clock
on- Saturday Morning, says the Cincinnati Adver
tiser of Monday, the steamboat Empress caught
fuPdn the Ladies' Cabin, and before the flames
were extinguished, the *bole of the Cabin and
upper decks were consumed. The engine and
hull escaped without sustaining any material in
jury. The Empress arrived from New Orleans
on Friday evnning apd had just got through dis

ANOTHER PROOF of the efficacy of Dr. Click
ners Sugar Coated Pills in removing worms
front children. Read and be convinced.
. This is to certify that my child Eliza, bet.veen five
and six years of age, having been for a long time past
drooping, and getting much wors, of late, neither
myself nor my wife being aware what was the mat
ter with her, I thought perhaps one of Dr. Clickner's
pills might do her good—l gave her one at bed time,
which acted on the bowels and expelled a Tape
worm four feet long, and a great number of worms,
(over one hundred) about one inch long apparently
of the same species.
I have always been much opposed to advertised
medicines, but through the advice of a friend who
strenuously recommended them to me, I was induced
to try them, and it was through the great benefit I
derived from their use in my complaint, that I felt
disposed to give a dose to my daughter, although I
!mew not then what was the matter with her; and I
verily believe that had not the worms been dischar
ged; she would not have survived to the present time.
She commenced rapidly to improve and is now quite
hearty and well.

ITIHIS fact is clearly demonstrated wherever we
I' have a sudden change in the weather. It is at
this time that the seed of Consumption is sown in
the system nurtured until the Lungs become serious
ly and dangerously diseased, when in all probability
the patient, for the first time, will begin to seek re
lief. How many thousands thus neglect themselves
and suffer their Health, and finally their Life to be
destroyed. The first preceptiblo foot-prints of CON
SUMPTION, experienced at sudden changes of the
weather, are Hoarseness and Cough, Soreness of the'.
Throat, and Irritation of the Bronchi. Pain in the
Head, Coldness of the feet, and Sudden Chilliness
over the Body. At length the cough increases, and
finally prostration and languidness of the whole sys
tent follows, which indicate a sudden decline ofl
Health, and the speedy approach of Consumption.
These facts, plain as they appear to every sensible ,
persondo not, however, seem to alarm tho'Se afflicted,
until it may be to late. It is therefore of the great
rst ;importance for those who may be attacked from
the effects of sudden changes in our atmosphere to
at o ne procure DR. DUNCAN'S Celebrated Especto
rant Remcdy, the greatest preventive and Life guard
of CONSUMPTION, and the only certain medicine
that will remove disease and again restore the
LUNGS to their former Health.
Dr, Dancan's Great Western Office is opened in
Cincinnati at 150 Sycamore street, a few doors below
sth, where his Medicines can be obtained in large
and small quantities.

Fifteen Days Later nom Europe
Ratification of the Oregon Treaty,Parific Intelli
gence—The New 31inistry—American Provisions
Declined—Cotton Firm—The Markets, he.
We received at 10 o'clock yesterday morning.
direct from Boston, a telegraphic despatch, an
nouncing that the steamer had been telegraphed
below that city, but the news did not commence
to reach this city by telegraph until a late hour in
the afternoon. We are, however, enabled to lay
the following summary of it before our readers
this morning:
The Ilibe ' rnia brings to the United States the
Oregon Treaty ratified by the British Government,
under the seal of the new Foreign Secretary, Lord
Palmerston. This document, signed by his Lord
ship and Mr...McLane on the 17th, at the Foreign
Office, was afterwards conveyed by . express for
despatch by the Hibernia, by his Excellency, Mr
McLane, Minister to Great Britain.
In the Houseof Lords, on the llth of July, the
Marquis of Lansdowne rose and said it was his
duty to lay before their lordships and that house,
the treaty which has just been concluded between
her majesty and the United States, in reference to
the Oregon Territory. He had the satisfaction of
informing their lordships that a ratification bad
that day been exchanged. A similar notice was
given on the same day in the House of Commons,
by Lord Palmerston, who appeared at the bar and
stated that he had a paper to present by command
of her majesty.
The new 31inistry had got to work, and the bu
siness of the country is again in a state of pro
gression. All the members have been returned in
the opposition except Mr. McCauley and Lord Ev
ington. In every question a disposition exists to',
give the new appointments a fair trial.
The affairs of Parliament will be wound up
probably by the middle of August. The great
movement to reimburse Mr. Cobden for the loss
of health and money, is progressing apace. There
is every chance that the .£'100,009 tixel upon as
the amount to be given to him will be raised. Ef
fort. will be made to raise a splendid monument
to Sir Robert Peel, by means of penny subacrip.
tions throughout the British Empire, as an expres
sion of the Nation's gratitude.
PAntaiarENT.—The proceedings in the House
or Parliament possess considerable interest. Lord
Brougham led the assault in the matter of the
Judges' salaries. Earl Gray showed that if blame
attached to any one it was to the noble lord him
self
Mr. Duncombe wished to hear from the noble
lord himself, a distinct avowal of his views on
the leading topics of the day. Lord John Russell
declined this categorical analysis. but while doing
so said sufficient to point the moral of his future
career as minister of the principles of free trade.
to which he avowed his unwavering attachment.—
Justice he would literally carry out, but with re
spect to the established Church of that country,
the Premier thought it imprudent to meddle with
in this early stage of the business.
The same eveaing, Lord John Russell declare .I
that be would make his vie .vs respecting the sugar
duties known on Mond:iv.
The Cotton ntriret is firm tvi:h gaol steady
business, and prices have an upwatii tendency.
The timber trade is in ain rst nourishing con
dition.
The Parisian newspapers, without exception of
political caste. look with intense interest to the re

country were in possession of the enemy. This
was done by the guerilla warefarat in which
small parties of the enemy were murdered.twher
ever they were found.
Paredes had not lea the city of Mexico. It was

Jack calls it This the sailors of the squadron
are eager to undertake.
The British steamer arrived at Vera Cruz on the
14th, without Santa Ana, and the best inMrmed
now say there is no probability or his coming
there at all.
The,yellow fever is making great ha% oc among
the troops both in the castle and in the city. The
soldiers being mostly from the interior are not
accustomed to the climate of the sea coast. and
therefore suffer in health very severely. Sera
Cruz could easily be taken with two or three thou
sand men, who could land either north or south of
it. At present the city is nearly deserted.
Excellent health prevails throughout the squad
ron, the frigate Paritan alone excepted, on board
which vessel the scurvy prevails to a great ex
tent.

CONGRSSIONAL.
The senate. to-day, took up' the bill providing
for the graduation and reduction of the price of
the public lands, and after adopting sundry amend
ments, passed it. We give the hill as passsd in
the record of proceedings.
The civil and diplomatic appropriation bill was
then taken up, and the amendments of the Com
mittee on Finance were adopted, with a few not
very important alterations.
The Senate then went into executive session
The House was engaged' for upwards of two
hours on sundry propositions.
The President this day returned to tile House,
with his objections, the bill "making appropria
tions for the improvement of certain harbors and
rivers." The bill it all matters connec
ted with the principle which it involves—were
discussed, the reader will recollect, for several
weeks in the spring, when the subject was then
under consideration. An effort was made by Mr.
Boyd to bring the House, by means of the previ
ous question, to a direct vote on the question of
"reconsideration," prescribed by the constitution
of the U. States. The effort failed; and the de
bate, in the meanwhile, procludes the transaction
of all other business. Prominent amongst this
is the independent treasury bill.
Scors or TEMPERANCE.—The members of this
association celebrated their anniversary in Cincin
nati, on Saturday in a creditable and becoming
manner. There was a large attendance from the
adjacent towns. At Mt. Auburn suitable orations
were delivered by several prominent speakers, and
a sumptuous dinner prepared, for 1300 persons.

rr They have cured, since their introduction,
over 2.000 persons, who have been given up as hope
less cases, by the most eminent Physicians.
Ca - They are patronized and recommended by
men of the highest distinction, among whom are—
Hon. David IL Porter, Hon. Henry Clay,
Hon. John Q. Adams, lion. Daniel Webster,
Hon. Martin Van Buren, lion. J. C. Calhoun,
(',en. Winfield Scott, Col. it. M. Johnson,
Hon. James K. Polk, Gen. Lewis Cass.
Mir Their virtues are so infallible that the money
will be returned in all cases they do not give univer
s d satisfaction. Although but two and a half years
have elapsed since these celebrated Pills were first
introduced to the public, the sale of them in the
Eastern and middle States has far exceeded Dr.
Chekener's most sanguine expectations. During the
pi.st year, alone, no less than 10,000 gross of boxes
base been sold in the State of New York, 6,000 iu
Pennsylvania...l,ooo in Maryland, 3,000 in New Jer
sey, 2,000 in Delaware, and 9,000 in the New England
States, recoiling the constant employment—of 27
hands, exclusive of printers and engravers. In the
same period, upwards of 200,000 copies of the
"Family Doctor" have been ordered by agents in
every section of the r,,ontry. These facts must
shwa, conclusively, that Dr. Cl ickener's Sugar Coat
ed l'ills, besides being the i; - iry best medicine in the
world, are held in the highest estimation by the public..
We might extend this publication to an indefin
ite length, if We deemed it expedient to publish all
tersdnonials we have received, nut only from agents
but indivii!uals and families, who have experienced
the benlicial effects of Clickener's Sugar Coated
Pills, but we deem it unnecessary,. The mostin
cnnteatihir evidence, of their unprecedented success,
fire the numberless Imitations and COunterfeits which
have already appeared, notwithstanding the brief-pe
riod they have been before the public. Even some
of our staunchest pill makers have had the audacity
to imitate the Capsule of Su g ar, in order to disguise
the in;:redients of their vile compounds, and palm
them Mr for the "real SIMOD pure." Snell paltry
shifts caunot-last long without exposing their hideous
defornuty. Truth and honesty must inevitably pre
vad met' rascality and deccidom.

NEVER DESPAIR—Y . 6u can lie cured!
1 LAMBERTSVILL.T. - , (N. J.) June 10, 1846.
Dr. D. JAYNE, No. 8 south Third street, Philadel
phis.—Denr Sir—l have ,this day had an interview
with the gentleman of whom I made mention to you
as 'having taken your'Expectorant with such decided
effect. He is a respecta bl &farmer, living a few miles
from here. I was so much interested in a detailed
account he gave me of his cough and cure;. that I.
embrace the first liesure nioincnt to communicate' it
to you, and if the cure is as radical as it appears to
be', it is the most remarkahle one I have ever known.
For 32 years (after having the measles) he has been
suffering with a cough of the most distressing kind,
getting worse as he advanced in years; (lie is now 55.)
Frequent terms of coughing and difficulty of breath
ing, lasting from 'an hour to an hour and a half,
would come upon him, with such severity asto ex
hahst him, with strangling until his eyes became
bloodshot. He had despaired of being cured, hav
ing tried physicians and a thousand things without
relief. For nine weeks immediately previous to his
tahing the Expectorant :he had not been able to'go
to his barn, although there was the most urgent. ne
ceSsity for him td do so.
A MORRIS,
No. 65 Market et
During the, nine weeks he was under the care of
anicminent Physician, and-he finally got just able to
gooat and catneto my store, and, hearing his cough,
I recommended to him 'your Expectorant. Ile first
said he had tried so many things that he had no con
fidence in any thing; but I induced him to take a bot
tle by telling him of persons of my acquaintance who
had been deeideply bene.altd by it.. This was on
Tuesday; that night he totik of it, and says thatit was
the first comfortable night's sleep he had enjoyed
for i years. On the Thursday following he went to
work, and has continued ro snake a full hand on his
aim ever since, (now nearly two months.) He told
md to-day that for the last week he had cut and split
a hundred rails, or made 100 panes of fence per day; I
hap been in the water to wash his sheep, and other
wi4e exposed, without least symptom of a return
of; his cough, it having entirely disappeared, and,
strangest of all,' one third of a bottle ,has produced I
thq effect. He Seems so diafikful and overjoyed that
he!" iCalaS to talk all day about it," add says that if
heeould not procure another bottle, he would refuse
$lOO for the remainder of the bottle he has left.
