Soine further skirmishing tooliplace between , „ the insurgentS and some troops Of cavalry, in the pay of the , Government, and preparations. were making on both sides for a general engagement the next day. Gee. Francisco Duque, who had taken the com mand of the Government troops. proposed a parley with a view to spare. the effusion of blood. Commissioners were appointed on each side, and the result of the deliberations was that Gen. Duque and the officers and troops under his command, were allowed to retire with the honors of war— they pledging themselves to retire at once from Gaudalajura and the Department of Jelasco, of which it is the Capital. and proceed - immediately to the Capital of Mexico, by a route to be ileadg owed for them They were to be provided with necessaries for the march, and were allowed until the morning of the 2t2d May to make preparations for their : departure. Gen. Duque and his officers were compelled to pledge themselves that they would commit no act of hostility against the troops who had pronounced, nor against the cause for which they had pronounced. The other terms of agreement were unimportant, but the insur gents dictated all. Don Joze Maria lamer, styled in his procla mation Commander in Chief of the Second Di vision of the Republican Army, was at the head of the insurrection. LATER FROM TAMPICO By the arrival of the James T. Day. a letter bag was received from the sloop of war St. Mary's, now blockading the port of Tampico. We 4aare been favorcd, says the Picayune, with the perusal of a letter dated on board the St.Marfs, June 17, which is eleven days later than previops accounts. The Ti. S. Consul at Tampico had Min compelled by the iniquitohs decrees of the Mexican Government of the 13th of May, to take refuge on board the Saint Mary's. Great apprehensions had At one time been felt in Tampico of an attack on the place by the Inieric:.ri squadron. but that bad subsided. On the ltith, a messenger was sent on board by the British Consul, informing us that all foreign residents had armed themselves against a band of negroes, foreigners. who were harboring outside the city. thieatening to rob and murder, all the foreigners. Such is the present Sta:e of affairs at Tampico. FROM VERA CRUZ The New Orleans Bulletin has been allowed to ranscribe the following extracts from a letter do ed Vera Cruz, June 1 I: my last, by way of Haedna, there has been no change in our sad position. The blockade expected, and the panic at Vera Cruz is so great. that the majority 01 the families have evacuated !be city It is thought that both the city and cas tle will be attacked, as it is said that two line of battle ships and four frigates are coming. En trenchments have been constructed in every street. Heaven knows why: New batteries have been placed on the “Balunrlq," consisting of GO pound ers and obustes of large calibre. All this is cal culated to attract the fire of the Americans on the city, to the destruction of many of its edifices. The garrison is suffering greatly from, vomito, which is making terrible havoc, and thinning daily the ranks of the soldiers.. President Paredes opened the new Congress by a message in which he called for a declaration of war, &e. I shall endeavor to send it to you. The Custom-house is packing up its papers and preparing to decamp. Most of the public officers are in the same predicament. We are in hopes that the Americans will carry on the war with vigor and promptitude. This is the surest means of bringing it to a speedy termi nation, for the Government is now in the greatest perplexity. Pronunciamentos are daily taking place in the interior, and complete anarchy pre vails." LET-rsns of Mil2o.l7E.—We arc informed, says the Philadelphia U. S. Gazette,, that the President will in a few days, send a message to Congress, re commending the issue of Letter of Marque Com missions. This is done in consequence of a letter received by the Department from the U. S. Consul at Rio de Janeiro, in which it was stated that a gang of Buccaneers were Mint under the Mexican flag, on the seas in that vicinity, and had recently overhauled a British vessel. Driesbacb is the wonder of the world as a control ler of beasts; his pettiger's feats, together with thoSe of the lions and leopards have been beheld by mil, Drieshach actually drives lions 'harnessed in his car, thus showing the supreme divinity of man above the nature of the brutes. To persons whose properly has already been dam aged or destroyed by fire or water, the advaUtage, of personally adjusting the loss with an inStitution AT HOME, will be strikingly evident. To those who suffer ed by the Great Fire, this particular corporation needs no recommendation. The prompt payment of the whole amount of its lossess--ImiaLT Two AIUNDEED THOUSAND DOLLARS—is 1.0 them a sufficient guarantee of future security, It is the part of all prudent men, however fortu nate, to anticipate calamity for the purpose of avoid ing its effects.
