REDUCED TO ASHES 700 MXICANS KILLED ! AND ONLY ONE AMERICAN! A GENERAL BLOCKADE OF THE MEXICAN PORTS ORDERED. TRIUMPH OF THE AMERICAN ARMS. Ey the Southern mail, we have glorious news rom the Army. The intelligence will be received hroughout the country with joy and gladness. From the Picayune, Extra, of the 11th but The steamship New York, Captain Windie, ar; rived in port on Sunday evening, - having left Bra zos Santiago, the afternoon of Wednesday, the 6th inst.' Her news is important, and of the most gra 7 tifying description. The following report is from Cap. Walker, oi the Texas Rangers, who had arrived on the sth inst. at 4 P. M, from the entrenchments opposite Mata moros. An engagement had taken place between the United States and Mexican. forces, General Taylor on the evening of the 3d inst.; left the en trenchments with a detachment of United States troops, for the purpose ofopening a communication between Point Isabel and the entrenchments. On the Morning of the 4th instant, tho Mezi• cans, taking advantage of his absence } at day break opened a heavy cannonade on the entrenchments which was gallantly returned by the IT. S. Troops, and in thirty minutes silenced the enemiesbatteries reducing the city of Matamoros to ashes. On the morning of the 6th the slaughter amongst the Mexicans was tremendous; upwards of 700 lay dead on the field - of battle, and the number of houses left in Matamoras was not sufficient to accommodate the wounded. Accounts say that the number of Mexicans in and about Matamoras was estimated at 10,000 men, and reinforcements daily expected. Gen. Taylor seas to leave Point Isabel on the 6th inst., with a detatchment of, troops, determin ed to open communication between Point Isabel and the army opposite Matamoras, which has for some days been cut off, and only effected in one instance by the gallant Walker, whose horse was shot from under him, and the loss of 6 men. M'Cleister and Radcliff are two among the six men of Capt. Walker's party killed, whilst forcing their way through the Mexicans to the United States camp. Our troops are in fine spirits. The main body of the troops are probably on this sideof the river. Only one American killed and he by a ',hell. The works were so well constructed that the Mexican shot could not injure them. In the battle, Major Ringgold, of the Artillery, Commanded the American. Camp, opposite Mata. morals, during the engagement. ANOTHER BATTLE EXPECTED. On the morning of the 6th, previous to the de parture of the New York, a heavy cannonading was heard, supposed to be another attack of the Mexicans on the United States troops opposite Matamoros. The N. 0. 13ulletin has the following particu By the arrival of the steamer New York, Capt. Phillips, from the Brazos St. Jago, via Galveston, the report is fully confirmed of the Mexicans hav ing thrown themselves in force between the Amer ican camp and Point Isabel. Capt. Walker, o the Texan Rangers, who, it will be remembered, galantly offered to carry communications from Point Isabel to Gen. Taylor, succeeded in his des perate enterprise. • General Taylor immediately nn being made ac quaintod with the condition of affairs, determined with a part of his army to march to Point Isabel, and accordingly on the evening of the Ist inst., left his intrenclaments with from a thousand to twelve hundred. :nen, cavalry, artillery, and in. fantry, Ile arrived at Point Isabel on the morning of the 2d, without having encountered . a single Mex ican. On the morning of the 3d; having heard the firing of artillery in the direction of Materna. ras, Capt. Walker was again dispatched to racer, tain the cause. This brave man again succeeded in reaching the camp, and on his return on the sth, reported that the Mexicans, finding Gen Taylor absent from the camp, and his forces divided, took the oppor, tunity to open their Battery at Matamoras on the camp; and those on the ea.steru bank of the Rio Grande, at the same time made an attempt in tho rear. - The four gun battery in our:camp was immedi ately opened upon Matamoros. The Mexican battery was silenced in thirty. minutes, a number of houses in Matmnoras destroyed, and the ene my on the American aide of the river compelled to return. - But one American was killed, and none wound, ed. What number of the enemy was killed or wounded is not known to any 'degree of certainty. It is reported that as many as 100 men were kil led, and that a sufficient number of houses was not left standing in Matamorait to afford shelter to the wounded. The ultimate result has yet to be known, how ever, as the firing was continued at intervals up to the time of the departure of the New York from the Brazos, on the oth ; about, I P. M. As to the number of Mexicans on either side of thg Rio Grande, it is still, in a great measure, mat ter of conjecture. Those on this side of the Rio Grande, have already been estimated at 3000, and it is not probable, that they would cross with a much smaller force. They are now estimated at 5000. GEO. S. SWARTZ We understand that Col. Hays, of the Rangers immediately on hearing of Gon. Taylor's position, marched to his relief with 400 men, determined, to force his way through the Mexican lines. In the skirmish which Capt. Walker had with the Mexicans, previous to the departure of the El. len Clara, it is known that not even the remainder have returned into camp safe. The bodies of five of them have been found, but owing to the shocking manner' in which the Mexi cans had mutilated them, Captain Walker recog nised only two, McClister and Radcliff: The U. S. schooner Flirt was to leave the Bra zos in a day or two with dispatches for New Or leans. The 1.7. S. brig Lawrence was still at the mouth of the Rio Grande, enforcing the blockade. All well on both vessels. Steamer Monmouth left on the evening of the sth, bound to Aransas, for the purpose of bringing every man capable of doing military duty, to the camp at St. Jago. (From the Galveston News of the Bth inst.) my 2(}-3td When Gen. Taylor left Point Isabel, there was not the slightest doubt he would have cut his way to the entrenchments through vastly superior num bers of the enemy who were known to be posted in large forces among the almost impassible thicket of chapperels on the road, with a determi nation to cut him off: The number of Mexicans is estimated at from 15,000 to 20,000. It seems reasonable to suppose that a decisive and glorious battle was fought, yesterday; we wait with painful anxiety to hear the result. POINT ISABEL SAFE. Although but two and a half years have elapsed since these celebrated Pills were first introduced to the public, the 'sale of them in the Eastern and middle States hair flu exceeded Dr. Clickenees tnoat sanguine expectations.
