STVANI BOAT. RUNNER.3..•' 4I/ 0 are sorry totlearn that the system of employing limners to procure pas— senger+, has been resumed by some-of our steamers, or perhaps we would speak more properly by saying for some of-our steamers, as we do not;feel justified in asserting that any boat has resorted to a practice su generally and pointedly condemned. When last year, at the request of a large number of our citiiees, +..tbe steam . boats ceased to employ Runners, we had beped that - mode of securing patronage would be for— ever abandoned by the baut owners. The decided fueling then evinced by the public against the system should not be disregarded, and we trust will not be without its influence. In the confidence (but public opinion will entire!? eradicate the error, we will re fruin from any furthevcomments on it a present. The Penancelo Democrat says—We are indebted to a citizen of this city for the following extract of a lever from an offi cer on board the Somers, which embraces all the most important items of news: On the 161 h, Mr Diamond was informed by a letter from Mr Parrot, the United Staten legation, that Mr Slidell Sad demanded his passports, having been rein. sed reception as minister, although the Mexican ex pressed a perfect willingness to trent with a com missioner on the Texas queation. He also wrote that Mr Slidell would be in Vera Cruz. in the course of a week, and would immediately take passage then'. from for the United States. The St Mary•'s was in readiness for his accommodation when we left. Mr Slidell has certainly demantied his passports It a fortunate moment when the news from England and the state.of the connuy, and more especially the fears out squadron are conspiring to art on the resolminn of Mexico. The people of Vera Crux ar4t awfully frightened, and are, as will be seen by the newspapers moving out of the city. The Mexican navy has been taken in tow by the steamers, to a place of absolute safety. fur up one of thc neighboring rivers. The discussion of the monarchy questinn hes, I am purauaded, done mu h for us. Nine-tenths of the peoplof Mexico are ardent tapublicans; it is only a few of the high class and aristocracy who support the views of the royal puny. There Is an interesting ar ticle on the subject in the last, papers. The Briti-h minis er writing to the English com mander on the station, says that he cannot persuade these people that England will "mit ce—opstate with them apinst the United States. We have received reports from Jalapa that the noibern provinces are obeli!. to Jecede from the con f-deracy. Another account says: . Ampudia's army which had been ordered to the frontier of Texas had revolted, and about 1,000 refused to march anvfarther in that direction, and the remainder, about 2,000, not being very desirous to pro ceed themselves, worth' nut force the others; so they came to halt " Valuable Beal Estate for Sale.
