In Senate, to-day, little of general interest trans pired, save in the consideration of executive business; in the course of which, it is understood several nomi s. nations were confirmed. principally for offices located in Texas. I heard of no . cthers, except those of Mr Cole, as Surveyor of the Port of Baltimore, and Polk as Naval Officer of the F. am e place. A resolution was previously passed, directing the Secretary of the Treasury to cause examinations to be made to ascertain the quantity of land subject to inundation between Memphis and yicksburgh; and to report at the next session of Congress. The lowa sailed from Havre 12th December„and bring. us London dates to the 10th. and Havre to day of sailing. The announcement of the London Times as to the repeal of the Corn Lair a. and opening of this porta, was evidently premature, but there are intim t ions that a commercial treaty is on the upia between Great Britain and the United States. The unworthy insinuation agair.st. our Minister, Mr NELane, was promptly met and checked by the Seomary of Legs ' lion. .The news is of great ireportacee, as exhibiting the ,feeliwg in Englarid reledive to opening of the ports, and the olgotisiting a commercial treaty with Lilo ` United States. Thesittletration of the London Times. of the 4ith ,ult., that the English Cabinet had agreed upon the opening of the ports, and several ethrt important ,measures, created a tremendous sensation throughout ,England and France. Its effect in London ens like throwing a. bombshell in the very midst of the bank ers and politicians. It 'appears,. however, that the Times withdraws ita statement, with the importantpoilitication that the English miniitey had changed its view..., and tkat the ports would not be opened The excitement which the.f.rst announcement pro duced in• every circle, however, ems the means of letting .out the important fact, that negotiation* had probably been begun in London for a commercial treaty between England rind the United States; and it is supposed that Abe antaunterrient of the Times was originally based on the probable fact. Ganserocirt Melville, Esq, Secretary of the Legation of the United States, hns•eddrisksed the following let ter to the London Herald: ' Situ—My attention has this moment been called to an editorial which appeared in the Morning Her ald of yesterday, and which is copila vritboui'corn ment in the Standard of the same date: Front it I beg leave to extract all that part which refers to Me. M'Lane; the American Jliaister, piemising that ho left 1.: - .ndon fur Paris on the morning of the 3d inst , and flits not yet returned. That portion of the article to which I allude, reads as follows: .•The American Ministei has been charged with mil informiag.the Tru s ts for the purpose. which probab ly some diplomatiits may not think dishonorable, of sending to the Bolted States fabricated new. that might influence the decision of the tariff question.— We do not suspect Mr McLane of such indirect prac tice, but whether or not be has resorted to it, the guilt of the Times is the same; for that Journal ought not to publish what it knew to be false dpOrt the suggestion of any one, least of all upon the suggeatiofrof k for eign Y inister. Mr McLane, however, (or the sake of his own honorable and pure character, and for the sake of'the honor of his country, would do well to acquit hifcagli,of, recharge that has been very extensively cir culated in the city." Thitty years of high pubtic.sergice., and a probity in private life which is • proxerbial. have placed Mr. M'Lane beyend, the reach'ef attacks like these, and FOREIGN NEWS. impossible for such' e-bangas to obtain • moment's credence in America, or with any one in Europe to whom M'Lane is known. In fact, I scarce ly deem them worthy of reply; but yet, lest in the pre sent excited state of the public mind upon the subject of the Corn Laws, any man should be so far misled as to accord to these calumnies even passing considera tion, in the absence of Mr M'ltane, without commu nication with him, on my own responsibility, I deny explicitly, fully, and without reeitve, encli•and ever% imputation therein contained, and brand them with falsehood from first to last.
