Tnardny Evening.
Thin has been a day of unusually and exciting inter
eat in both branches of Congress.
In the House of Representotives the resolutions
from the Committee on Territotles, rot the admission
of Texas into the Union, as art independent state,
were called up at an early moment. They have been
made the order of the day for yesterday. but not reach
ed, at that time. On their bring announced and reed,
a motion was made by Mr Herrick, to lay them on the
table. Mr McConnell celled for the previous ques
tion. and would not withdraw it. The motion to lay
on the tnble was then put, end decided in the negative,
Yeas, 52, Nays, 142. The question then occuring—
"shall the juint resolutions be engrossed and read a
third time, this day," Mr McConnell celled the pre
vious question; tellers were appointed, and the call
sustained. Yeas, 108, Nays,9o. The question was
then put, and the resolutions ordered to be engrossed
fur a third reading, by a vote of 141 to 57.
The resolutions being engrossed. and on considel !I
lion fur final passage, Mr Rockwell introduced
motion to tecommit, which he advocated at some
length; after a hich. and after a v aunty of motions and
di, isior s, and calls to mter, they were put upon the
final passage and iiilepted, by a auto of 141 to 51i, and
transmitted to tie Senate.
in the Senate, the greater portion of the day. was
spent in the discussion of the Resolutions, prepsrnto•
ry for sir, (referred in n y ',Hera last evening,) in
a hich Messrs. Niles. Webster, Sevier, Crittenden,
Berrien, Allen, Clayton and Breese took part. The
debate, a son yesterdoy was highly interesting, from the
character of the subject, and the eloquent patriotic and
impteseive manner in a Lich it was treated by most of
the speakers. Some of the Speed:Cl flaxe seldom

&c. Ihs Senator from Michigan. with becoming dig

the habit of using words without meaning—that be
believed if Englund adhered to her uniform policy,

bas beenconsiderable warmth manifested through the
debate, and stranga to say. it closed by the unani

IViII theta be war. is the all absorbing (oration
here? That war is not as remote, as many have hereto..
fire imagined, is becoming quite evident. The vast hr.
memento fitting out at every naval oath n hi England,
are certainly not indicative of peaceful purposes.—
That she will fight before she will abandon her claim
to Oregon, I feel well assured. That our government
will neither racede, nor compromise, is absolutely act
tied, I think by the state of public opinion, which is
peremptory for the whole Territory. Under these
circumstances, is not war at least prob Able? The
general impression here, in that it is mote than probe.

ize inferences favorable to the preservation of peace.
Yet, lam satisfied, that it was not the intention of
the Executive to make any such impression. Indeed
I feel confident that Mr Polk and his Ce►inct,;are not
without apprehensions of a rupture. There is a gent•
eral anxiety in Congress to be ready far tho exigency,
should it arise, and but a short time will elapse be
fore preparations for the worst will commence.

the remarks they gave rise to.
