In about two hours after the fire commenced the whole of this splendid edifice was burnt to the ground. "Samuel Fowler Gardner, Esq., one of onr most highly esteemed and respected citizens, perished in the ruins of the house. Mr Gardner and several oth er persons were in that part of the building which ran east and west, over the dining room or saloon, the ceiling of which was supported by iron rods at tached to the roof. When the roof gave way the ceiling of the saloon fell in, drawing in also the sides of the building. A few minutes before this occurred several of our citizens, finding their ret,eat otherwise cut off, jumped from the windows on the piazza below, without injury, except Mr Robert Coggeshall, who was severely injured, and Mr George Burroughs, al so severely injured by fulling with a ladder he was descending. Mr Edwin P Peckham was one of the last who jumped from a window, and he just previ ously said to Mr Gardrier, "I'm going to jump from Otis window." Mr G. replied "I'm too old to jump." As Mr P. jumped he says he felt something give way in the building and immediately after he alighted it fell in a heap together, and was soon enveloped in flames. After it was all reduced to cinders an engine was brought to play upon the spot where the loss of life occurred, and the handless, mutilated remains of Mr Gardner was discovered and recognized by his watch, spectables and pencil found on them. '•The establisement was owned by a company of gentlemen in Newport, and was insured at the Ameri can office at Providence for $B,OOO, Washington of fice fur $6,000, Providence Mutual office fur $4,000, and in Hartford at the Hanford office for $6.000, Protection office fur $B,OOO, and "Etna office for $6,- 000.
