Last night our city was visited by another fire, which broke out about past 2 o'clock, in the stable or Mr Dennis McKelvy, on Clay alley, in 6th ward, and from it extended to adjoining buildings, until it destroyed 4 frame dwelling houses, and five stables.— The dwelling houses were of the commonest descrip tion'of frames, ani the stables of little or no worth.— Mr. McKelvy will be the heaviest looser, having lost five hors",, together with his waggon and gears: and a person whose name we were unable to learn, also had two horses burnt. The buildings were above the level of the water, such as was obtained being conveyed to the engines in buckets—yet notwithstanding this 44:malty, and the buildings on fire being surrounded in every direction with frame buildings and shanties, the firemen with their accustomed ability, had the fire under control in half an hour after it was discover. ed. There is strong suspicions of it having been the work of an incendiary. A man residing very near. was up and out at 2 o'clock, at which time there could have been no fire kindled. HE subscribers respectfully announce to the pub lic, that they have purchased ef E L Walker, the invbnter of the Harmonic Attachment, the right of manufacturing and applying the same to their Piano Fortes. This beautiful and valuable invention surpasses any improvement which has ever come before their notice, and they invite the attention of all admirers of the Pi ano Forte to it, not doubting it will recommend itself to them, as it has to the following distinguished indi viduals at Washington, upon its introduction, who speak of it in the following commendatory terms: "We had the pleasure, a few evenings since, of wit nessing an improvement in the Piano Forte, invented by Mr E L Walker, of Carlisle, Pennsylvania, in which the peculiar feature of otherstringed instruments, con stituting one of their greatest beauties, (vir: the pro duction of harmonic tones.) has been successfully at tained. "We are fully of opinion that it presents one of the most gratifying improvements in the art of music we hove ever known. The introduction of the harmonic tnnes not only increases to a great degree the capacity of tho instrument, but is of itself pleasurable in a high degree—the tones having that peculiar effect which gives so much grace to the harp, guitar, &c., and pro duciug a delightful variety which ran he employed at the wid of the performer by a single pedal action. '•This beautiful invention must work n revolution in Piano Fortes and in the arrangement of music for that instrument, for it gives to the performer the power of displaying taste and skill to a much greater extent than upon the ordinary Piano Forte. -For skill, execution, and tasteful conception of mu sic. Mr Walker can have few superiors: and his servi ces to the mu , ical world will, we have no doubt, be come extens.ively known and fully appreciated. \V P Mangum, T R l'eale, J T Moorhead, C B Penrose, C N Page, J E E4py, C M Keller, Henry Stone. C T Fleisehmann, J J Green. ugh. C B F Gailloo, M D. •' Washington, Feb. 21, 1843." The above improvement does no! change the form of the Piano externally, but beautifies the interior, and its additional cost does not exceed forty dollars. Another advantage possessed in this improvement is, flint it is applied by an entire metallic arrangement, and cannot airy from the scale of the Piano, or be subjected to any disarrangement, either in itself or that of the instrument, which can be used either with or without the Attachment, at the will of the perform er. A simple pedal i; all that is required fir its ap plication to the strings, by which the performer will produce the moat exquisite music ever hoard from the l'inno Forte. We wish it distinctly 'understood, that this is an improvement in the Piano Forte, and net flue ad dition of another instrument called the ...Er 'llan At tachment. The "Harmonic Action" being applied directly to the strinea, makes this an improvement in the Piano Forte. No do we wish to detract in the least from the merits of the ''.Ealien Attachment," leaving as we do the relative merits of each to he ap preciated by the public. 'T he subjoined area few extracts from papers refer ing to this new invention, which may ba some innicit tion of itsreeeptiunt [From the Washington Correspondent of the N. Y. Express.] A patent was taken nut a few weeks since, by a young artist, Mr R L. NValker, with an improvement upon Il i , piarn,, by which the harmonic tones,.sosweet and sn di ffi cult of littlinment, even to the most skilful per t.. it trier, are produced at pleasure bythe use of a pedal. Heretofore, I believe, these harmonics have never been brought out upon the piano, and upon the harp and violin only by the most eminent artists. Last Saturday evening Mr Walker gave a concert, in which be made the f r<t public exhibition of his invention, and so far a; I hate learned, there was but one opin ion ehf his success. Such harmony was never before heard from the piano. 'As an artist, Mr Walker has but few equal-: but the cxqubdtely sweet and melting tones of the harmonies produced a sensation far ex ceeding any effint of skill in execution. Sameness of tone has been the greatest objection to piano music, and gave a superiorly to the harp sad violin. This objection is now entirely remeved; and the tone of the instrument mny now be made to correspond to he sentimontul. I believe this is the greatest im• provemetit in the musical department that has been made since the invention of a piano; and is destined to effect a revolution in instrumental music. Mr \Val ker has devoted several years, I understand, to the perfection of his invention, and in ill soon visit New York to exhibit it there. iENt=• =~- [From the Na:ional Intel., of Feb. 22, 1345 ] Mr Walker's Concert —This di,tinguisrd Pianist gives a Concert at the Assembly Rooms on this (Sat urday) everiinz, aided by Mons. Gibert. Mr Walker will exhibit his improvement on the Piano, whi c h is moat appropriately stylrd the 'Harmonic Attiich- Went." We am assured by good judges that nothing is more beautiful in music, nothing more difficult of attainment, than these sounds on the instrument capa ble of producing them. By this ATTACHMENT these are produced at the will of the performer by a pedal alone, and the effect is so beautiful as to leave nothing more to be hoped for or to be attained. The music selected for this evening is amtint.r. the moat difficult as well as the most attractive which has ever been written for the Piano. IVe trust the lovers of music may be on the qui vice, and show their just appreciation of musical science and talent. [From the Carlisle (Pa.) Herald and Expositor.] We are gratified to Ileac from both private and pub lic sources, that our townsman, Mr Welker, ban met with the fullest success in introducing his newand val uable improvement of the Piano Forte to the notice of the musical public in Washington city. Professors of music and amateurs who have listened to Mr %Volker's performancees, speak in terms of the highest praise of the improvement, and are delighted with the effect it produces. The new invention is styled the "Harmon ic Attachment." [From the Washington Correspondent of the True Sun.] Mr Walker and Mr Gbe , t gave a concert last even ing, at which the fot mer performed for the first time in public upon the piano with his harmonic attachment. The effect for this simple invention is most exquisite. ft produces a delightful soft n es s of tone, w hi c h h as sometimes been uttaind by the skillful touches of peat ma ders on the instrument, but is far beyond the powers of no ordinary performer. It is impossible for me, who have no arquontance with melodious me chanics, to describe the character of this attachment, but I nm informed that the cost of an alteration of an instrument by the addition of this improvement is less than $lOO. Musical linpracement.—A patent wan taken out a few weeks since by a young artist. Mr E L NVallter, for an improvement upon the Piano, by which the har monic tones, no sweet and so difficult of attaiment, o ven to tbn most skillful performer, are produced by the use of the pedal. Heretofore these harmonies have never been brought out upon the Piano, and upon the harp and the violin only by the most eminent nrtists. A. FL GALE & CO., Piano Forte Nlanuca:tures, New York.
