have not only retrieved the fast failing hopes of the
farmer, but have given a new spur to business general
ly. Navigation by steamboats has been resumed, and
the wharf presents a very animated appearance.—
There will doubtless bo w 'ter enough in a day or two
fur the largest sized boats.
Ur bon bo:sar de Betzen, was performed on
Monday night to a large audience. WHARAM and
Miss POILTIR made decided hits in the leading char
acter*. The play is one of the best that we have late
ly seen, and will hear frequent repretition.

THREATENED INVASION BY MEXICO
By the steamship New Yot k, Captain Wright, which
arrived at New Orleans on the 6th instant, the Repub.
lican of that city has received dates from Galveston to
the 3d inst.
Mr. Henderson, U. S. Consul at Galveston, end
Judge Baldwin, of N. Y., were among the passengers.
Soon after the &nivel of the New York, says thin
Republican, a letter from a source entitlrd to the most
unlimited confidence was placed at ourdisposal. From
it we make the following extract:
Look out for mar with Mrxico.—Since Elliott's
arrival from Vera Cruz. this is all the talk. It is said,
too, that Mexico is concentrating a large force on the
Rio Goande, which is to move against 'foxes if she
rejects Elliott's treaty. I believe tear trill be thc ef
fect of the steps recntly taken by the British govern
ment.

renounce annexation to the Unity(' States, leaving us
at liberty to be anne x ed to England or any goycrn
ment. end comments strongly against the meddling of
this officious minister.
Elliott has a set of proposal', G r the independence
of Texas, if she rejects annexation. These proposals
will be rejected. Of course the initiation of wnr is
thrown bock open Mexico; but in my judgemet Elliott
will contrive to send secret intelligence to the Mexi
cans on the Rio Grande, end that they will not wait
for new orders from the Mexican cripitar
The U. S. squadron, under command of cool. Stock
ton, were lying off Galveston when the New York left.
No British chips of war were in sight.
Capt. Elliott, the British Charge d'Affaires. had
arrived in Galveston with a treaty from Mexico, ac
knowledge the independence of Texas, and set out
foribe seat of govenment immediately. The Gnlveg
ton News on this subject says: The purport of the
treaty according to Elliott's statement to a friend of
ours, is simply the rerognition of our independence.
On the other hand the official org-tin denies that
President Jones has sent or iiiitieiriced am• person to
en to Mexico and treat for the independence of Tt , 1 , 16,
and affirms that be i; favorable to the measures of an
nexation.

broken. At last accounts he was getting better.

Capt Parkinson, arrived at Charleston on the 12th
inat., from Havana, bound to N. York; put in for
supply of fuel.
Capt Parkinson inform. the Courier that the Br.
mail steamer Medway arrived nt Havana on the 7th
inst.. from Vera Crtrt, whirth port she left on the Ist
instant. having on hoard as passengers General Santa
Anna, lads and family. who had been banished from the
Mexican teritories. They were to proved to Venezu
ela. The Br mail steamer Doe. also arrived at Havana
on the 7th inat, with Gen't Bustamente on board, on
hi+ way to Mexico
