Elliott, the British Charge d'Affaires. had arrived in Galveston with a treaty from Mexico, ac knowledge the independence of Texas, and set out foribe seat of govenment immediately. The Gnlveg ton News on this subject says: The purport of the treaty according to Elliott's statement to a friend of ours, is simply the rerognition of our independence. On the other hand the official org-tin denies that President Jones has sent or iiiitieiriced am• person to en to Mexico and treat for the independence of Tt , 1 , 16, and affirms that be i; favorable to the measures of an nexation.
