THOS. PHILLIPS & WM. H. SMITH, 6DITOA.S; IPITTE.BURGH, SATURDAY, APRIL 12, 1.45:-. PITRTURR PARTICULARS OF TOE GREAT FIRE! • 1t . .;, 1 14,1313iVe just returned from an hour's walk among the ruins of the .disastrous coalagration. Frightful as weathe progress of the ilames, and terrible as the havbe seemed, while it was going on, no one can teal tiikttel itiesei, tind privations our citizens have sustain edoapryhe walks through the forest of naked chim ter, and broken walls which mark the path of the sleatrollieg element. Of the 1200 houses which were ettiessea., ,sd as the number lost, about. 700 were dire!- 1 suppose atleast 4091 perscSl have been throwishut of house and home. Fortunately tha weath ar,4hmtgh somewhat cool, has been d Ty, and thus the removal of property was less difficult, and the suffer- Se l ma those who lad to remain exposed in the air, Iteil, setre than they would otherwise have been. 7 'TM; whole l e ngth of the burnt district is about one mils ; the average breadth about 160 yards; making an arerof about 60 acres. We mentioned that one woman, Mrs. Warrens, was! tsiunted.: in her house;in Third street. We have heard of no other loss of life, though fears are entertained for 2A3witt. iCteurrox, Esq., and Mr. JOHN JOHN-, irp r , pt. Allegheny city, who have not been seen by their Triends since the foe. Their relatives had heard nothing of them up to last evening. It is most sur priiing that . so few persons should have been killed or t , li•f‘ -~ S~' ,'~ Injured, when we recul the swift progress of the flames, and the terrible confusion which was caused by the efforts of the people to save their property—carts, s hgrs drays, wagons, in short, everpsort of vstiele was . Ptitin requisition, and was driven through the streets at fearful speed, Before our office, the vehicles were often *rimed together in a way which seemed to ren der certain losses of life or limb--yet no accident • ociuried. Yesterday -the vaults of the Bank of Pittsburgh Wssel, and the books, papers and money were . :eiMiist uninjured. The Iron Safes of Mr A. Kakilittend SIUBET JonEs,.l3rokers, were also opened, and all their contents were well preserved. Alreadystre men busy at work in rta:teveting from the ruins, Iron, and other articles worth digging out; and we saw many busy with hatchets cutting the plas ter from the fallen brioks, preparatoty to re-building!— Such indomitable energy is worthy of all admiration, itit aprominent trait in the character of our citizens, and -givercheering evidence that we shall soon regain oil-prosperity, in spite of the terrible calamity we have endured. <'~: d. ~` K', ~., Wesolsjoin a list of the linsiness and dwelling houses which ham been destroyed. APiir' OVERFLOW 3 OF TUE LOW LAND 3 NEAR BLIFFALo. —The breaking rp of the ice at Buffalo has been ad- I tended with disastrous consequences. The Courier of Monday says: The ice has almost entirely left the mouth of o'er harbor arid this end of the lake. It. has passed on so rapidly from this point as to almost ill l the gorge through the mountain plain that forms the channel of the river from the falls to Lewiston, and has more than overtopped at and below that place.— It there forms a bridge of above fif , y feet high entirely across the river, enabling people to cross and reel-03s on foot from Lewiston and Queenston with perfect and impunity. The immense mass of ice crowded down the stream and heaved up and impacted to prodigious thickness has partially damned up the channel of the river, and 'Caused the neighboring low lands to be flooded.,„„Pn the flats back of Youngtown the water is said stand fifteen feet deep. The three warehouses and docks at Lewiston, the warehonses and docks at Queenston, and the docks at Youngston and Niagara have been entirely swept away, and probably a large amount more of damage done of which the particulars have not reached us It is no uncommon thing for the river just below the falls to tie blocked up in this way with ice, but it is very rare, we believe, that it occurs between Lewis town and the mouth of the river, and still more seldom that it accumulates and coacretes into such a prodi gious mass as in the present instance. We do not remember a time when any considerable damage has been done from this cause, and the occurrence is not less singular than it has been disastrous. These par ticulars we learn from a gentleman who came up on the cars last evecing. 47- Attorneys D Junra, Allen Kramer, J M'Curdy, D Wick, Gen Anahu J Fritchman, -* - 'az OF sieve DI A R IEs ..— ' . , ay , a new y .
