For example, a letter of Shenstone's, the poet, brought thirteen shillings—ono of Dr Frank lin's broagbt thirty thr 7 ee shillings—two letters in the band writing of Mrs Jordan brought only seven shil lings —sob* cue letter in that of Charles James Fox cudy, eight shillings, and 0110 of Canning's let ters the same sum. Autograph, of George 11, 111, and IV, brought from sevento fourteen shillings—and one of "Marys the Queen," brought twenty-two shillings. Sir Wet ter Scott's autograph brought eight shillings. The gravid lot of all, No 100, commanded a much higher sum. Das lot was thus described in the catalogue:— "A. letter of the celebrated GEORG F. IV ASH' rionom,da ied Fairfax county, Virginia, June 24, 1771." There .was a spirited competition for this lot, which was final ly sold for two pounds end five shillings. It is re markable, that the letter of an American President should command a higher sum than the autographs of British Kings and Statesmen! This simple incident shows, in some degree, the high estimator of Wash. ingtou among Englishmen. _ Wooten in Office..—The new constitution of New Jersey gives to the people in the several townships the right to elect their justices of the peace. The right of election heretofore rested with the Legislature in joint meeting, end as that body was revolutionized nearly -every other year. about every u her man had been rewarded by a "squire's" commission. In Wood wich township, Gloucester county, the people, in town meeting, last week, it seems, came out unitedly against the "Old Hunkers," and, to form afull ticket of oarxlidates from the people, took up two very re- PrsitMe maiden ladies, Sally Brown and Bet-y d% , and voted them in by a triumphant mnjority.
