THE PRESIDENT AT GUYANDOTTF. The pappers along the route which was traversed by tbelivesideut elect to Washington, 'elates some hu wwesesCirtutnstances connected with his travels. The - following from the correspondent of a New York pa per, describing the reception at Guyandotte on the Ohio River is the best thing in this line that u e have sees. The sketch has the appearance of being truth fully drawn. "Among others came the old Postmaster, who made up to the President in a very open and frank manner, oltsming his hand, which Col Polk very politely receiv• ed. Bays the old man, addressing him, "Governor Polk, lam glad to see you, although I voted against yes. I have been 26 yews Postmaster at Guyandot te. I sinnedbnce, and Amos Kendall turned me out. I repented, and was restored to my office. I now hold it, or shall soon do so, at your good _pleasure, and am ready to yield it whenever required." The President replied, that "he considered the right of every man to Ida own opinions, honestly formed, and to think for himself, a sacred right, and therefore thought none the less of him for having voted against him; and was ready to believe that the office of Post master at Guyandotte was in very 11 , 16/ hands. But as thandSce of President, as well or that of Postma s ter, was created by the people for their own convenience, and not for you and me, who may happens to fill them, we are alone responsible to the people, under the. Con stitution, for the faithful manner in which wedischarge our duties." This speech delivered by the President, seemed to strike the old Postmaster with great force, "Governor, give me your hand, them's just my semi ments; and I believe in my soul, if I had only seen you five minutes before the election, I should have giv. en you my vote." This caused a general laugh, in which the President cordially joined. A TRUE PICTURE The following picture of a southern planter. as we too often find him, is from the graphic pen of our friend Wilsori, of the Planter's Banner There is a deuced sight more truth than poetry in it. By the bye our planters will probably learn a little gumption, and thee we shall be happy to see the picture revers ed, but until then candor compels ua to acknowledge its correctness. Nash. Gas. "Now for the picture of the planter. lie wouldn't sell a chicken, nor a doxxen of eggs, ror a bushel of peaches, nor a cal., for any consideration. He is above that! He raises cotton—he does! He rides in a six hundred dollar carriage, for which he is in debt. His daughters thrum a piano that never will be paid for. He buys corn which he could raise nt ten cents a bushel, and pays sixty cents fur it, after !2 per cent. advance to his commission merchant. He could raise his own tobacco, yet he pays $3 a pound fur Richmond scented. He could raise his own hogs— yet he patronises Cincinnati. The consequences are disastrous. Being the possessor of one staple, he fluctuates with the market of that article. lie takes the "Price Current."—he pays po•itage—be Cobbles down the English news like a cormorant: If he sell to-day, he'll lose—therefore he'll wait f o r better nO vices. He is "mixed up" in cotton, and is a gambler therein. Meantime be wants money; drafts on his factor! He wants cotton goods and clothes for his plantation, that he could make at home. He orders them, and feels "large." The manufacturer, the rer, the shipper, the freighter, the drayman, the ware holjure man, the seller, and finally, the commission naseebant, all have a finger in the pie of profits, and the proud foolish planter pays them all. The year closes, and he is 'up to his eye brows' in debt! This is the result of his not 'calculating' nor even guessing the difference between forming and planting. One supports a family; and the other supports pride, un til 'pride gets a fall.'" CELEBRATION OF ST. HUMANITY is deeply indebted to the ingenuity and perseverance of Dr Edmund Landis, a citi zen of Lancaster, Pen nsylvatila, for a valuable improve ment in the construction of the Truss for the meliora tion of Hernia or Rupture, which, after being careful ly tested by application to a number of patients, has never failed to give relief, and in most cases has proved successful in effecting a permanent cure. This iinproved Truss has been submitted to the must emirent members of the medical profession, who, af ter fair trial and examination, have concurred in prvi nnuncing it an important discovery, particularly as it admits of perfect adjustment to the seat of the com plaint, and of bearing with certainty upon the point where the pressute is required, without admitting of n chance of change or of shifting by any action of the muscles, hip or body, —the outer spring, which is very elastic, only giving, by which arrangement every move ment is accommodated. The suffering and imminent danger to life conse quent upon that most distressing of all complaints, Strangulated Hernia, need never be apprehended by persons who ,vear this improved Truss, and the patient may cherish a confident hope, that in consequence of the intestine or omentum never being permitted to protrude in the slightest degree, that the distended ring or opening will gradually contract, and a perma nent cure be effected, when the Truss may be dispens ed with altogether. This Truss may be very properly termed, Dr LAN DIS' COMPOUND SPRING TRUSS; the springs being 2 in number, the inner and the outer, the latter lying over the former. The exterior spring is three times the length of the interior, upon the end of the hitter the compress or eliptical pad or block is fasten ed, which rests upon the affected part. There is a small adjusting screw, which passes through the outer spring, immediately over the pad or block, and is formed to bear upon any part of the block, so that the pressurs!can be made to act Immediately Capon or over the rupture with the degree of force or weight which the case may require. The whole apparatus is so ad justed as to fit any peculiarity of form, at the same time so flexible as to occasion neither inconvenience nor uneasiness to the wearer, while following his usual avocations. J. D. DAVIS, Auctioneer The following distinguished members of the Med ical profession have borne ample and unqualified testi mony to the palliative and curative value and impor tance of Dr Landis' discovery: George B lierfoot, M D., and John L Adee, M D., of Lancaster; Geo M'.
