JAMES MeFAILREIII, fah 12. Watchman. BURGH, PA. Southern Reformer BY LAST MONT'S MAIL. From the Saltirnore Sun. TWENTY•EIGHTH CONGRESS. WAsuimerom, Feb. 12, 18.45 HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES A number of Executive communications, in answer to resolutions of inquiry, were received from the De partments and ordered to be printed. Among the Senate bills taken up for reference, was the bill making appropriation for a free bridge across the eastern branch of the Potomac at the Navy Yard. After some skirmishing as to the reference, Mr. Redding moved to ley the bill on the table. Mr. Petit said he had no objection to the bill provi ded it were amended so as to provide for a bridge across the Ohio. The vote was then taken on laying the bill on the table, and . it was carried — yeas 110, nays 67. This is much to be regretted, as on the present toll system at the eastern branch bridge a great burden is laid upon the fanners in that region of country. The long bridge, the aqueduct at Georgetown, and the Falls bridge, are all free. Hence, a farmer who is obliged to bring a load of hay or wood from tho eastern branch cannot compete with those from other parts, be being subject to a toll on each load of about filly cents. It is to be hoped the bill will be taken frots.the table and passed. At twelve o'clock, in pursuance of a resolution, the members of the Senate entered the hall arid took their seats in front of the speaker's chair, fur the purpose of hearing the counting of the electorsl votes for President and Vice President. The galleries were crowded to excreta by both sex es, anxious to witness the proceedings. The ladies outnumbered the. gentlemen two to one. Some amu sing incidents occurred. One young lady, lam told, construed an accidental squeeze of the hand into a proposal arid fainted. Visions of the future and of sweet little innocents crying for bread and butter, floated before her eyes—but when she slyly opened one eye and saw that the gentleman was not in ear nest, she recovered immediately. Nothing of importance was done in the Senate.— It is said thatispeaker Jones declines a re-nomation as a representative from Virginia, and that has been offered a place in the Cabinet of Mr Polk. Mr Pratt, of N Y, is about to introduce a joint res. elution authorizing the appointment of CommiSioners to remodel the executive departments, so that the M imics of officers shall correspond with the duties and responsibility. This reform is needed, for it is cer tainly unfair that a mere copying clerk should get $l.- 500, while another, whose duties require talents of the highest order, gets but $l,OOO. Mr P.. by his sound practical reports, has cut out work enough for an ex. tea session. Port of pittoburgli. FEET STATER IN THE CHAISNEI ARRIVED DEPARTED Lehigh, Price, St Lmiip. For New Orleans.
