OLD BROWN DOG.
There is an old brown dog,
That roams about our streets,
But no one knows from whence he came
Or where be eats or sleeps.
His name—his rice—and business here,
Are hidden in a fog,
Them seems to me a mystery
About that old brown dug.
He often haunts the post office,
His letter never comes—
He sometimes visits Louderisack's,
But buys no sugar-plumbs—
He curls himself beside the door
Which leads to the Gazette,
But never asks the latest news
Nor seems disposed to bet.
He dogs no master round,
Like most of his degree,
But through the longest winter day
In one lone spot he'll be.
And there with head between his paws,
He lids mid snow or rain,
As if 5017112 dog-ma wild and vague .
Perplex'd his troubled brain.
A wl.oftentimes I stop
And gaze, and try to trace,
The mournful thoughts that seem to flit
Across his wrinkled face.
Perhaps he dreams of days
When filled was pin:lance's cup,
Of days of sunshine, mirth and joy
When he was but a pup.
The coice he once obeyed
May long have died away,
But still he waits to hear its call
Fro n weary day to day,
He dreams of ancient times,
Nor can he quite suppress
A sigh—when visions real arise
Of bones—now marrowless.
Enough—l do not wish
To pry in his affairs,
But on his breast he seems to bear
A weight of heavy cares.
His name—his race—and business here
Are hidden io a fog,
There seems to ben mystery
About that brown old dog.

IMPORTANT TESTIMONY.
DR SWALTNE, Dear Sir:—ln last October, while en•
gaged with Mr Joseph Smith, in a saw-mill near
Weyaesburgb, I was attacked with a cough from be
ing exposed at night, which gradually increased, at
tended with spitting of blood, and a severe pain in the
breast, loss of appetite, fever, &c. &c. which was
scarcely supportable. I had a family who were whol
ly dependent on my exertions for support, yet I was
obliged to leave my business and return home. I was
then attended by several physicians, but still grew
worse, until my medical attendants gave me up as an
incurable. Subsequently, my wife observing, in one of
the public prints, a n advertisement of DR. S W AY N E'S
COMPOUND SYRUP OF WILD CHERRY, pro
cured me one bottle from Francis l‘l'Clure, your agent
in Lewistown, which relieved me; I continued until I
had taken five bottles; I am now able to return to my
work again. I write this to offer you my sincere
teanks, and you are nt liberty to make tb's known, su
that if any human being is suffering 118 l have been,
they may have recourse to your invaluable medicine.

It is not generally known, but nevertheless true, that

must be made up by adulteration; dye woods have at

Medicated Vapor Bath.
COPT OF ♦ LETTER FROM DRS. LAWRENCE •ND
HANRICKSON.
New Lebanon, Stale of New York.
WORTHY FRIER M—Having made a thorough trial
of the Medicated Vavor Bath for four months past, in
our societies in New Lebanon and Watervliet, we think
it but justice to state, that we consider it a valuable
improvement in the healing art. Its power in reduc
ing both chronic and acute infatuation, also in remov
ing spasms, is certainly very great. In cases of ob
structed perspiration, it is unquestionably the safest
and best remedy that we have ever seen. Several
persons in our society, who were scarcely free from a
catarrhal affection during most of the winter months
for several years past, have found permanent relief by
using the Bath a few times; and the predisposition to
take cold, as it is commonly termed, seems to be wind
ly removed. Obstructed perspiration, is certainly in
our changeable climate, one of the most fruitful sour
ces of disease, and any remedy that is capable of re
moving the predisposition to it, must be considered a
great blessing to mankind; and as such we do not hesi
tate to recommend the Medicated Vapor Bath.

Mr. R. Dolt kVA N•••• Sir: I have in use one of Hath
awav's Hot Mr Cooking Stoves, which I got from you
last Spring. It affords me much pleasure to recom
mend it fur its excellence. So far as my knowledge
extends, I have no hesitation in saying it is the best
stove now in use. reseed not particularize its merits,
but would advise all disposed to possess an article of
the kind, to adopt the best method of satisfying them
selves, that is, to try it; arid i doubt nut they will be
satisfied. 1). R. MILLER.
Washing/oft Temperance Howse,
Pittsburgh, Sept. 19, 1844.
Mr. R. Dot: it have had in use for five
months, one of Hathaway's Hot Air Cooking Stoves,
and I have no hesitation in saying it is the best stove
now in use. The •winos kintis ((cooking it is oaten.
!sited to do at the setae time, mod the small quantity
of fuel tequired, makes it an abject worthy the atten
tion ofall who desire a good stove.
re I embrace this opportunity to recommend the
Hot Air Cooking Stovetc I have used the one yid put
up for me constantly all summer, and I must sly it is
a grand article. I behave it is superior to any other
stove now in use in.this city. The oven bakes well,
and is large enough to bake four large loves of bread
at one time; it also cooks very speedily, and it requires
very little coal, lthink them worthy the attention of all
who wish a goad stove; to such I would say, try them
and prove what they are.

And see if this tooth wash of Thorn's is not fine.

DAVID HUNT, Dentist.
Pittsburgh, Sept. 15, 1842
I take pleasure in stating, having made use of
"Thorn's Tea Berry Tooth Wash," that it is one of the
best dentrifices in use. Being in aliquidform, it com
bines neatness with convenience. While it cleanses
the enamel end removes the tartar from the teeth, its
perfime yields a fragrance peculiarly desirable.
