In regard to the culture of American cotton in Ben. gal, it most be admitted, that although the espad. mania have been numerous, and in 1011/11 instances au an extended scale, the whole have hitherto been eery ducted by amateurs, many of whom, baiting satisfied a temporary wish to tie the culture, have ahem. Boned it, whether successful or otherwise, se that it is almost impossible to form a decided opinion, as to bow far the cultivation world answer in a commexeiall point of view. Of hue, however, there appears to be a desire on the part of the Government Or Bengal to take up the culture, as evinced in the appointment hot year of a gentleman who has had considerable experi. ence in America, for the empress purpose of reporting, afters careful investigation, on the capabilities of the soil and climate of Dacca, and the surrounding dis tricts, for the introduction of the foreign staple. We alluded to this circumstance on a former occasion, and we now learn, from the reports which the Defuse,. governor has considerately placed at the disposal of the Agricultural Society. and which were submitted at ha last meeting, that during the.last eight month. Mr Price bas been engaged in travelling over various parts of Dacca, Funeedpore, Tippers, and Bulloeh. situated on the Dultussarv, Conai, Megna, Ramapo°. Os, Luckia, and other rivari in that tract of country, and has seen many spots oa which the foreign cotton could be cultivated to advantage, more particularly en the Hottea and Snrdeep, as also on other small is. lands situated on the Hottea river, in 'consequence of their contiguity to the sea. Some of his experiments have been successful, while others have failed; but irs ' no instance does he appear to have received fresh seed in time to sow at the proper sensate so, on this very essential point, he may be said to have labored under a great disadvantage, besides ex r erienei ng other minor difficulties incidental to newly all first attempts at a new culture, Notwithstanding these natural ob. stogies, he seems to have seen enough to induce him to hold out sanguine hopes that, if advantage can be taken of the proper season, he will be able to cultivate the plant to advantage in the Dacca district. In con. sequence of this favorable opinion, we understand that Government have it in contemplation to commence the work in earnest, by the appropriation of such tracts in the district as, from previous examination, may be considered most fitting for the cultivation of Ameri. can cotton, and to combine therewith a matter of even still greater importance. namely, the increased cultivation and improvement of the indegenious sty ple.—Calcutta Star, Aug. 7. THE MORAL ASPECT OF THE ELF.CT/ONS, Apart from the mere political results of the late elections, there is one aspect in which they can be con. templated, which is full of interest to all those who are devoted to free institutions. We have se en , a f ter several months of deep and pervading excitement, this population of state after state, record their opinions on questionsof great importance, in perfect order and pelmet. A stranger looking upon the agitated matelot' oar societies just before the election, might naturally have supposed that it would be impossible to work Of so mach fermentation without violence. But in a situ tee day, by the simple process of depositing a little piece of printed paper in bores, the exacertvation las plated away, and the millions of human beings this the clay before seemed ready to devour each other wits rage and prejudice, quietly resume their wonted own. patient. There is in our view a moral grandeur in this ape& tad*, which has not been equalled in the history of the human lace. That the whole of a mighty nation after many week* of earnest and even bitter dispute, after their political and religious convictions haves been vividly aroused by all kinds of appeals, from the presa, the tribune, and the pulpit,—tire political destinies of many coming years, to say nothing of the immense pecuniary stakes, hanging on the result—ahould thus cheerfully submit to the aseeruriner! majority of voi. nes, manifests a devotion to rublle order. Latta reliance upon the general intelligence, which Sr. among th e strongest testimonies that soul/ be given to the bear fief& infloence of liberal forms of government. It greatly adds to the effect of this spectacle to consider that during sII the great movements of the people, there has been nq occasion for the iatentesititat of matt ry, and hardly Of civil force. Results of this kind justify the fee friends of denioerecy are ever disposed ' the hone% et a greduai advancement r stitutions.—/f. Y Lee.
