clock, P M, of the 29th day of August next, for deliv
ering at the Navy Ytud,-Charlestewn, Mass., two hun
dred tons of American water-rutted Hemp.
This Hemp must be equal in quality to the Riga Rein
Hemp heretofore purchAsed for the. Navy, samples of
'which are now in the said navy yard—must be deliver
, ed free of all expense to the United Status, ands sub
ject to the inspection and approval of persons will
Ibe appointed by, and act wider, instructions from the
Navy Department.

mount of the contract, for its performance, if the offer
should be accepted.
Separate proposals will be received for quantities o
not less than thirty tons, nor more than two 'hundred
' tons. To diminish the hazard to contractors of fur
warding hemp from the Western States, which may not
be of proper quality or sufficiently well prepared, the
Secretary of the Navy has appointed two agents, who
will, when requested, inspect that which may be prepar
ed to fulfil contracts to be made under this advertise
ment. One of these agents will inspect the Hemp that
may be sent toLouiurville, Kentucky, and the other that
which may be sent to St Louis, in Missouri. These a
gents will be furnished with samples of Riga Rein
Hemp, and with the means of testing Hemp, and will
be ready to give all information in :heir power, to en
able contractors to have their hemp properly prepared,
and to ascertain the strength and character of it, be
fore the expense of sending it to the navy yard is incur
red. It must be distinctly understood, however, that
the inspection and opinion of these agents is merely to
diminish the risk to contractors, by furnishing useful
information. The only inspection by which the hemp
can finally bo received and paid for,will be that at the na
vy yard where it is to be delivered.
The whole quantity of the hemp embraced in any
contract must be delivered at the navy yard Charles
town, Mass, on or before the first day of August, 1845.
In addition to the bonds which will be required for
the faithful performance of eAantractts, ten per centum
will be deducted from all bills for deliveries, and re.
tabled, until the completion of the contract, as additien
al security for its performance, The remaining ninety
per centum will be paid within thiity days after t h e
bills, duly approved, shall be presented to the Navy A

Transportation Line, from the United States Portable
Boat Line. to the American Portable Boat 'Line.
This line is composed of twenty-fivenevr Four Sec
tion Portable Boats, one of Which will depart daily
from Pittsburgh, Philadelphia slid Baltimore.
The superiority and advantages of the Portable
Boat over every other mode of transportation are too
well known to shippers generally to require comment:
suffice it to say, that the detention, loss, separation ann
damage to Goods, invariably attending three: ra
shipments between Pittsburgh and Philadelphia, tr
by the Portable Boats most effectually removed.
To give undoubted security to owners and shippers
all goods and produce shipped by this line will be in
sured in a responsible office in Philadelphia, without
any additional charge to the owners,
Merchandise shipped by this line in any of the east
ern cities, and consigned to H Devine & Co, will he for
warded immediately On arrival at Pittsburgh to any
part of the west, free of commissions.
H. Devine will receive produce consigned to him,
pay steamboat freight and charges, and forward the
same to any of the eastern cities, and charge no com
missions for storage, advancing or forwarding. Any
communications or goods directed to the care of the
'undersigned Agents will be promptly attended to.

timore every day (except Sundays) during the season.
